This paper investigates the capabilities of tabu search for solving the global path planning problem in grid maps. Accordingly, a tabu search system model is designed and a tabu search planner algorithm for solving the path planning problem is proposed. A comprehensive simulation study is conducted using the proposed model and algorithm, in terms of solution quality and execution time. A comparison between our results with those of A* and genetic algorithms (GA) is presented for small, medium and large-scale grid maps. Simulation results show that the tabu search planner is able to find the optimal solution for small scale environments. However, for large scale maps, it provides near-optimal solutions with small gap while ensuring shorter execution times as compared to the A* Algorithm. A discussion about the advantages and limitations of TS for solving a path planning problem is also presented.

Interactive visualization of virtual environments is an active research topic. There is a multiplicity of applications such as simulation systems, augmented and mixed reality environments, computer games, amongst others, which endlessly demand for greater levels of realism and interaction. At every stage of the process, including modeling, image synthesis, transmission and navigation, there are identifiable circumstances which may compromise the achievement of high quality solutions for the posed problems. For many of these problems, an effective use of optimization tools can play a major role in order to achieve solutions with better quality. Within this context, an innovative optimization architecture is presented regarding to two major principles. The first principle comprises the possibility to integrate, with reduced effort, the optimization tools with existent applications and systems. Thus, we propose an agent-based framework where the optimization application may operate as an independent process in respect to the visualization application where communication is achieved by means of a specifically developed high-level message based protocol. The second principle establishes on the utilization of a class of intelligent optimization methods, known as metaheuristics, which major distinguishing quality is their great level of problem-independence, thus, enabling a wider application. The paper describes conducted experiments and presents results that demonstrate the utility and efficacy of the proposed framework.

In this paper we propose the integration of an online audio beat tracking system into the general framework of robot audition, to enable its application in musically-interactive robotic scenarios. To this purpose, we introduced a staterecovery mechanism into our beat tracking algorithm, for handling continuous musical stimuli, and applied different multi-channel preprocessing algorithms (e.g., beamforming, ego noise suppression) to enhance noisy auditory signals lively captured in a real environment. We assessed and compared the robustness of our audio beat tracker through a set of experimental setups, under different live acoustic conditions of incremental complexity. These included the presence of continuous musical stimuli, built of a set of concatenated musical pieces; the presence of noises of different natures (e.g., robot motion, speech); and the simultaneous processing of different audio sources on-the-fly, for music and speech. We successfully tackled all these challenging acoustic conditions and improved the beat tracking accuracy and reaction time to music transitions while simultaneously achieving robust automatic speech recognition.

Demand-side management studies include such goals as the reduction of the maximum electrical energy demand and the demand strategic growing that may lead to specific actions such as the rates adequation or the energy resources conservation or saving. To support these strategic decisions it is necessary to have typical models of customer consumption behavior. A sample of 112 monthly consumption files of selected energy users was used to classify customers using a data mining technique based on an ART (Adaptive Resonance Theory) algorithm modified with euclidean distance measure. Each file contains one load curve per day and each curve consists of 96 consumption values (Kwh) - one for each 15 minute interval. The algorithm gives results very similar to those obtained by iteratively using a combination of traditional approaches of statistics and visualization. However, with the mining algorithm, the time invested in getting the results is in the order of minutes, as opposed to hours with the traditional approaches. The paper will describe in detail the methodology, algorithm, and software system used to classify energy customers.

For over three decades now, silicon capacity has steadily been doubling every year and a half with equally staggering improvements continuously being observed in operating speeds. This increase in capacity has allowed for more complex systems to be built on a single silicon chip. Coupled with this functionality increase, speed improvements have fueled tremendous advancements in computing and have enabled new multi-media applications. Such trends, aimed at integrating higher levels of circuit functionality are tightly related to an emphasis on compactness in consumer electronic products and a widespread growth and interest in wireless communications and products. These trends are expected to persist for some time as technology and design methodologies continue to evolve and the era of systems on a Chip has definitely come of age. While technology improvements and spiraling silicon capacity allow designers to pack more functions onto a single piece of silicon, they also highlight a pressing challenge for system designers to keep up with such amazing complexity. To handle higher operating speeds and the constraints of portability and connectivity, new circuit techniques have appeared. Intensive research and progress in EDA tools, design methodologies and techniques is required to empower designers with the ability to make efficient use of the potential offered by this increasing silicon capacity and complexity and to enable them to design, test, verify and build such systems.
