Tetun is one of Timor-Leste’s official languages alongside Portuguese. It is a low-resource language with over 932,400 speakers that started developing when Timor-Leste restored its independence in 2002. The media mainly uses Tetun, and more than ten national online newspapers actively broadcast news in Tetun every day. However, since information retrieval-based solutions for Tetun do not exist, finding Tetun information on the internet is challenging. This work aims to investigate and develop solutions that can enable the application of information retrieval techniques to develop search solutions for Tetun. Training firefighters using Virtual Reality (VR) technology brings several benefits over traditional training methods including the reduction of costs and risks. The ability of causing the same level of stress as a real situation so that firefighters can learn how to deal with stress was investigated. An experiment aiming to study the influence that additional stimuli (heat, weight, smell and using personal protective equipment-PPE) have on user's stress level while performing a Virtual Environment (VE) designed to train firefighters was developed. Participants' stress and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) were obtained from electrocardiograms recorded during the experiment. The results suggest that wearing the PPE has the largest impact on user's stress level. The results also showed that HRV was able to evidence differences between two phases of the experiment, which suggests that it can be used to monitor users' quantified reaction to VEs.

Colorectal cancer is a leading health concern worldwide, with late detection being a primary challenge due to its often-asymptomatic nature. Routine examinations like colonoscopies play a pivotal role in early detection. This study harnesses the potential of Deep Learning, specifically convolutional neural networks, in enhancing the accuracy of polyp detection from medical images. Three distinct models, YOLOv5, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8, were trained on the PICCOLO dataset, a comprehensive collection of polyp images. The comparative analysis revealed YOLOv5’s submodel S as the most efficient, achieving an accuracy of 92.2%, a sensitivity of 69%, an F1 score of 74% and a mAP of 76.8%, emphasizing the effectiveness of these networks in polyp detection. © ICST institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2024.

Dynamic laplace: Efficient centrality measure for weighted or unweighted evolving networks

With its origin in sociology, Social Network Analysis (SNA), quickly emerged and spread to other areas of research, including anthropology, biology, information science, organizational studies, political science, and computer science. Being it's objective the investigation of social structures through the use of networks and graph theory, Social Network Analysis is, nowadays, an important research area in several domains. Social Network Analysis cope with different problems namely network metrics, models, visualization and information spreading, each one with several approaches, methods and algorithms. One of the critical areas of Social Network Analysis involves the calculation of different centrality measures (i.e.: the most important vertices within a graph). Today, the challenge is how to do this fast and efficiently, as many increasingly larger datasets are available. Recently, the need to apply such centrality algorithms to non static networks (i.e.: networks that evolve over time) is also a new challenge. Incremental and dynamic versions of centrality measures are starting to emerge (betweenness, closeness, etc). Our contribution is the proposal of two incremental versions of the Laplacian Centrality measure, that can be applied not only to large graphs but also to, weighted or unweighted, dynamically changing networks. The experimental evaluation was performed with several tests in different types of evolving networks, incremental or fully dynamic. Results have shown that our incremental versions of the algorithm can calculate node centralities in large networks, faster and efficiently than the corresponding batch version in both incremental and full dynamic network setups. This paper describes a two-month summer intensive course designed to introduce participants with a hands-on technical craft on robotics and to acquire experience in the low-level details of embedded systems. Attendants started this course with a brief introduction to robotics;learned to draw, design and create a personalized 3D structure for their mobile robotic platform and developed skills in embedded systems. They were familiarize with the practices used in robotics, learning to connect all sensors and actuator, developing a typical application on differential kinematic using Arduino, exploring ROS features under Raspberry Pi environment and Arduino – Raspberry Pi communication. Different paradigms and some real applications and programming were addressed on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. Throughout the course, participants were introduced to programming languages (including Python and C++), advanced programming concepts such as ROS, basic API development, system concepts such as I2C and UART serial interfaces, PWM motor control and sensor fusion to improve robotic navigation and localization. This paper describes not just the concept, layout and methodology used on RobotCraft 2017 but also presents the participants knowledge background and their overall opinions, leading to focus on lessons learned and suggestions for future editions. © 2018, N.M. The evolution of intelligent wheelchairs with new systems to control them and help the user to be more independent has been remarkable in recent years. Since these systems have a significant impact on the quality of life of people with disabilities, it is crucial that it is suited for the final user and does not put his life at risk. Initially, this study proposes a 3D motorised wheelchair model with robotic tools to be used in simulation environments and helps the development and validation of new approaches. This model uses Robotic Operating System (ROS) tools to help the addition of sensors and actuators. With the ROS- Nodes, it is easy to add new features and controllers. The Gazebo framework was used to create the simulation environments. After that, following previous work, it is proposed a wheelchair controller that receives commands from a multimodal interface and can control a real and simulated wheelchair at the same time. This work studies new wheelchair models and their respective controllers in a simulated environment and gradually test in real- world to obtain the final model with low costs and minimise engineering costs.

In this paper we present a set of field tests for detection of human in the water with an unmanned surface vehicle using infrared and color cameras. These experiments aimed to contribute in the development of victim target tracking and obstacle avoidance for unmanned surface vehicles operating in marine search and rescue missions. This research is integrated in the work conducted in the European FP7 research project Icarus aiming to develop robotic tools for large scale rescue operations. The tests consisted in the use of the ROAZ unmanned surface vehicle equipped with a precision GPS system for localization and both visible spectrum and IR cameras to detect the target. In the experimental setup, the test human target was deployed in the water wearing a life vest and a diver suit (thus having lower temperature signature in the body except hands and head) and was equipped with a GPS logger. Multiple target approaches were performed in order to test the system with different sun incidence relative angles. The experimental setup, detection method and preliminary results from the field trials performed in the summer of 2013 in Sesimbra, Portugal and in La Spezia, Italy are also presented in this work.

Case studies of development of verified programs with Dafny for accessibility assessment

Formal verification techniques aim at formally proving the correctness of a computer program with respect to a formal specification, but the expertise and effort required for applying formal specification and verification techniques and scalability issues have limited their practical application. In recent years, the tremendous progress with SAT and SMT solvers enabled the construction of a new generation of tools that promise to make formal verification more accessible for software engineers, by automating most if not all of the verification process. The Dafny system is a prominent example of that trend. However, little evidence exists yet about its accessibility. To help fill this gap, we conducted a set of 10 case studies of developing verified implementations in Dafny of some real-world algorithms and data structures, to determine its accessibility for software engineers. We found that, on average, the amount of code written for specification and verification purposes is of the same order of magnitude as the traditional code written for implementation and testing purposes (ratio of 1.14) – an "overhead" that certainly pays off for high-integrity software. The performance of the Dafny verifier was impressive, with 2.4 proof obligations generated per line of code written, and 24 ms spent per proof obligation generated and verified, on average. However, we also found that the manual work needed in writing auxiliary verification code may be significant and difficult to predict and master. Medical devices are rapidly evolving and becoming more interconnected with healthcare networks, overcoming resource constraints, and increasingly focused on patient well-being and needs. This work intends to identify future research themes in the area of cybersecurity in health by surveying the articles being developed and identifying their current limitations and future work. The developed analysis was based on the publications with the highest number of citations, enabling us to find several challenges and restrictions such as integrating devices in systems. Innovations and the emergence of new technologies with inherent security vulnerabilities, will continue to evolve, escalating the attackers interest in exploiting unknown cybersecurity risks within healthcare.
