In recent years, digital technologies have been used to support discussions about the city and also to involve citizens in participatory public processes. However, despite the widespread use of social media platforms, old issues related to engagement and participation still persist in digital initiatives. The main goal of this study is to carry out an empirical evaluation of a collective intelligence model that combines crowdsourcing and social storytelling to support discussions about the city from a bottom-up perspective. Within a design science research approach we designed a participatory action study that was carried out through a workshop with students and professionals from different areas, such as architecture, urban design and information technology. As a result, we were able to assess whether the collective intelligence model was acceptable to the participants by investigating whether the behavioral assumptions were valid and thus outlining some contributions to the field of urban informatics.

This paper compares the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) and NSGA-III to solve multiobjective sectorization problems (MO-SPs). We focus on the effects of the parameters of the algorithms on their performance and we use statistical experimental design to find more effective parameters. For this purpose, the analysis of variance (ANOVA), Taguchi design and response surface method (RSM) are used. The criterion of the comparison is the number of obtained nondominated solutions by the algorithms. The aim of the problem is to divide a region that contains distribution centres (DCs) and customers into smaller and balanced regions in terms of demands and distances, for which we generate benchmarks. The results show that the performance of algorithms improves with appropriate parameter definition. With the parameters defined based on the experiments, NSGA-III outperforms NSGA-II.

Taking into account the world´s growing population and climate change, there is a need to decarbonize production processes and, in particular, intensive cultures carried out in greenhouses. There is a need to boost the energy and water efficiency of these cyber-physical systems, taking into account human consumption or floriculture, as well as European Community (EEC) and United Nations agreements and pledges, such as the European Green Deal (EGD) or the REPowerEU Plan [1,2] t is critical to develop systems that use integrated models to control these sorts of intense production, collect physical variable factors more efficiently, and achieve improved and zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Finally, it is crucial for a digitalization in these intensive crops, in precision farm or greenhouses. The main objective of this work focuses on the conception of a portable automatic sensing system (PASS) for pH, electroconductivity and water flow, to control irrigation water quality in precision farm/greenhouses. The data collected by these sensors are made available in a mobile app for consultation by the operator. Another objective will be the local production of electrical and thermal energy from renewable sources (solar and biomass), hybrid systems and the use of cogeneration to supply energy to the greenhouse. The green hydrogen (H2) technology has an important role to play in the European Union energy strategy towards decarbonization. Apart from traditional H2 industrial usages, there is an increasing attention to its use in the heavy transport sector, in other energy-intensive industries, and in heating applications. Green H2 production is planned to be based on renewable electricity generation and its production at an industrial scale may have a significant impact on the electricity markets. This research assesses the electricity cost of producing H2 and its impact on the Iberian electricity market. Different evolution scenarios including a partially flexible H2 demand, based on the Spanish and Portuguese energy and climate plans, have been considered for this assessment.

Facial expression analysis is a widespread technology applied in various research areas, including sports science. In the last few decades, facial expression analysis has become a key technology for monitoring physical exercise. In this paper, a deep neural network is proposed to recognize seven basic emotions and their corresponding probability values (scores). The score of the neutral emotion was tracked throughout the exercise and related with heart rate and power generation by a stationary bicycle. It was found that in a certain power range, a participant changes his/her expression drastically. Twelve university students participated in the sub-maximal physical exercise in stationary bicycles. A facial video, heart rate,and power generation were recorded throughout the exercise. All the experiments, including the facial expression analysis, were carried out offline. The score of the neutral emotion and its derivative was plotted against maxHR% and maxPower%. The threshold point was determined by calculating the local minima, with the threshold power for all the participants being within 80% to 90% of its maximum value. From the results, it is concluded that the facial expression was different from one individual to another, but it was more consistant with power generation. The threshold point can be a useful cue for various purposes, such as: physiological parameter prediction and automatic load control in the exercise equipment, such as treadmill and stationary bicycle. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are expected to play a pivotal role in future indoor ultra high data rate wireless communications as well as highly accurate three-dimensional localization and sensing, mainly due to their capability to provide flexible, cost- and power-efficient coverage extension, even under blockage conditions. However, when considering beyond millimeter wave frequencies where there exists GHz-level available bandwidth, realistic models of indoor RIS-parameterized channels verified by field-trial measurements are unavailable. In this article, we first present and characterize three RIS prototypes with 100×100 unit cells of half-wavelength inter-cell spacing, which were optimized to offer a specific non-specular reflection with 1-, 2-, and 3-bit phase quantization at 304 GHz. The designed static RISs were considered in an indoor channel measurement campaign carried out with a 304 GHz channel sounder. Channel measurements for two setups, one focusing on the transmitter-RIS-receiver path gain and the other on the angular spread of multipath components, are presented and compared with both state-of-the-art theoretical models as well as full-wave simulation results. The article is concluded with a list of challenges and research directions for RIS design and modeling of RIS-parameterized channels at THz frequencies. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Federated learning (also known as collaborative learning) is a decentralized approach to training machine learning models. In 5G smart healthcare, federated machine learning (FML) can potentially improve patient care by offering improved diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy models. Nevertheless, a significant worry regarding FML is its lack of security. Within the context of 5G smart healthcare, this review paper looks at FML from a security point of view, discussing the benefits and risks of using FML in 5G smart healthcare and the possible solutions to these risks. The issues of privacy, adversarial attacks, communication security, and malevolent clients are brought up in the discussion on security challenges. Differential privacy, secure aggregation and training, adversarial training, secure communication, client authentication, and model pruning are some of the solutions that have been suggested. We will be able to protect the privacy of patient data in FML if we take the necessary steps to address these security problems.

Recent studies found that the adoption of distributed energy resources (DER) tends to cluster spatially and temporally which has significant implications for distribution network planning. Currently, residential DER adoption is mostly driven by public support schemes, also called incentive designs. Therefore, changes in those incentive designs will result in alternative spatiotemporal DER adoption patterns that affect distribution networks differently. Consequently, distribution network operators urgently need to understand the effects of energy policy changes on the spatial distribution of DER to guide network expansion based on realistic scenarios. The presented work and tool allow network operators to plan network expansion with robustness under future incentive design changes.

Public transport services play an important role in the mobility of the population in urban centers, allowing a decrease in the number of private vehicles in circulation and contributing to a more sustainable mobility. However, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic had a serious impact on the mobility habits of the population, with a substantial reduction in the number of public transport passengers due to the fear of contagion, which raises questions about the future sustainability of cities. Thus, it is essential to restore the confidence of travelers to feel safe and comfortable using public transport services. Taking advantage of the widespread use of mobile technologies, this article intends to propose a route planning system for public transport that meets the needs of passengers in terms of safety and comfort. After a systematic review of the existing literature and a series of focus group sessions, a prototype of the system was developed, and subsequently evaluated by potential users through usability tests. The results obtained are a good indicator of the system’s functionality and ease of use. This assessment allowed us to corroborate the potential that the proposed route planning system has in promoting the use of public transport services as a means of mobility.
