Automatic medical image segmentation via convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has shown promising results. However, they may not always be robust enough for clinical use. Sub-optimal segmentation would require clinician’s to manually delineate the target object, causing frustration. To address this problem, a novel interactive CNN-based segmentation framework is proposed in this work. The aim is to represent the CNN segmentation contour as B-splines by utilising B-spline explicit active surfaces (BEAS). The interactive element of the framework allows the user to precisely edit the contour in real-time, and by utilising BEAS it ensures the final contour is smooth and anatomically plausible. This framework was applied to the task of 2D segmentation of the levator hiatus from 2D ultrasound (US) images, and compared to the current clinical tools used in pelvic floor disorder clinic (4DView, GE Healthcare;Zipf, Austria). Experimental results show that: 1) the proposed framework is more robust than current state-of-the-art CNNs;2) the perceived workload calculated via the NASA-TLX index was reduced more than half for the proposed approach in comparison to current clinical tools;and 3) the proposed tool requires at least 13 seconds less user time than the clinical tools, which was significant (p=0.001). © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) provides beneficial information for dynamic power system stability, analysis and control. One main application of such useful information is data-driven control. This paper is devoted to presenting an approach for optimal signal selection in PMU-based power system stabilizer (PSS) design. In this paper, for selecting the optimal input and output signals for PSS, an algorithm is suggested in which the combination of clustering the generators and the buses of the system with ICA, modal analysis and PCA techniques is used. The solution for optimal PSS input-output selection is found to increase the observability and damping of the power system. This method is simulated on a 68 buses system with 16 machines. To compare the results with the previous methods, the system is simulated and the results of two previously-developed algorithms are compared with the proposed approach. The results show the benefit of the suggested method in reducing the required signals, which lowers the number of required PMUs while the system damping is not deteriorated.

Nuclear-derived morphological features and biomarkers provide relevant insights regarding the tumour microenvironment, while also allowing diagnosis and prognosis in specific cancer types. However, manually annotating nuclei from the gigapixel Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E)-stained Whole Slide Images (WSIs) is a laborious and costly task, meaning automated algorithms for cell nuclei instance segmentation and classification could alleviate the workload of pathologists and clinical researchers and at the same time facilitate the automatic extraction of clinically interpretable features for artificial intelligence (AI) tools. But due to high intra- and inter-class variability of nuclei morphological and chromatic features, as well as H&E-stains susceptibility to artefacts, state-of-the-art algorithms cannot correctly detect and classify instances with the necessary performance. In this work, we hypothesise context and attention inductive biases in artificial neural networks (ANNs) could increase the performance and generalization of algorithms for cell nuclei instance segmentation and classification. To understand the advantages, use-cases, and limitations of context and attention-based mechanisms in instance segmentation and classification, we start by review works in computer vision and medical imaging. We then conduct a thorough survey on context and attention methods for cell nuclei instance segmentation and classification from H&E-stained microscopy imaging, while providing a comprehensive discussion of the challenges being tackled with context and attention. Besides, we illustrate some limitations of current approaches and present ideas for future research. As a case study, we extend both a general instance segmentation and classification method (Mask-RCNN) and a tailored cell nuclei instance segmentation and classification model (HoVer-Net) with context- and attention-based mechanisms, and do a comparative analysis on a multi-centre colon nuclei identification and

New paths to increase the sensing performance of plasmonic sensors have been reported in recent years. There are several methodologies to achieve such purpose, namely by optimizing the nanostructure, nanomaterial and even the sensing platform. Recently the use nanoparticles over plasmonic thin films have been reported and shown sensitivity enhancement, when compared to a bare thin film. Nevertheless, a nanomaterial combination between NP and thin film has not been studied. In this work it was studied such plasmonic materials in order to optimize not only refractometric sensitivity but also decrease the resultant plasmonic band width. It was found that for Au, Ag and Cu thin films, the deposition of plasmonic nanoparticles resulted in an overall refractometric sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) increase. The larger FOM increase was obtained for the Ag thin film, from 42 to 162 when coupled to Si nanoparticles. The greater sensitivity increase was achieved for a Cu thin film coupled to a Si nanoparticle, with an increase from 1745 to 3230 nm/RIU. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A Non-Parametric LPV Approach to the Indentification of Linear Periodic systems ⁎

A non-parametric identification algorithm is proposed to identify Linear Time Periodic (LTP) systems. The period is unknown and can be any real positive number. The system is modelled as an ARX Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) system with a virtual scheduling signal consisting of two orthogonal sinusoids (a sine and a cosine) with a period equal to the system period. Hence, the system parameters are polynomial functions of the scheduling vector. As these polynomials may have infinite degree, a non-parametric model is adopted to describe the LPV system. This model is identified by a Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) algorithm where the system period is a hyperparameter. The performance of the proposed identification algorithm is illustrated through the identification of a simulated LTP continuous system described by a state-space model. The ARX-LTP discrete-time model estimated in the noiseless case was taken as the true model.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a type of dementia that leads to memory loss and impairment, which afects patients’ lives badly. It is not curable yet, but its progression can be slowed down if detected at earlier stages. In this research study, we propose a transfer learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) model to classify magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) into one of four stages of Alzheimer's disease. One of the major limitations of the deep learning-based classification model is the non-availability of healthcare datasets related to AD. The widely used Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset has a major class imbalance issue. We propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) based data augmentation technique to overcome the data imbalance. This promotes the investigation of applying GANs to generate synthetic samples for minority classes in Alzheimer's disease datasets to enhance classification performance. The results show the progression in the overall classification process of AD.

The rapidly increasing penetration of electric vehicles(EVs) in modern metropolises has been witnessed during the past decade, inspired by financial subsidies as well as public awareness of climate change and environment pro-tection. Integrating charging facilities, especially highpower chargers in fast charging stations, into power distribution systems remarkably alters the traditional load flow pattern, and thus imposes great challenges on the operation of distribution network in which controllable resources are rare. On the other hand, provided with appropriate incentives, the energy storage capability of electric vehicle offers a unique opportunity to facilitate the integration of distributed wind and solar power generation into power distribution system. The above trends call for thorough investigation and research on the interdependence between transportation system and power distribution system. This paper conducts a comprehensive survey on this line of research. The basic models of transportation system and power distribution system are introduced,especially the user equilibrium model, which describes the vehicular flow on each road segment and is not familiar to the readers in power system community. The modelling of interdependence across the two systems is *** into account such interdependence, applications ranging from long-term planning to short-term operation are reviewed with emphasis on comparing the description of traffic-power interdependence. Finally, an outlook of prospective directions and key technologies in future research is summarized.

Citizen engagement in building user-curated narratives of complex or long-lasting news stories has been the key foundation of the design and implementation of the Acropolis virtual environment. Previous user studies have shown, by positive evidence, that this goal can be pragmatically achieved, but the challenge now lies in assessing: a) the extent to which an environment like Acropolis can be used to empower citizens; and b) whether and how the tool could be used to support the work of professional curators. Findings from a focus group study highlighted the tool's potential to engage citizens with news, the usefulness of the environment to build virtual memories, and the convenience of using Acropolis to support professional journalistic work.
