An OFDM transmission system is reported based on a directly modulated blue LASER diode, for high bit rate under-water optical communication applications. The 256 subcarriers 16-QAM signal is transmitted over a total distance of 2.4 m underwater with an EVM lower than -28.5 dB for a 250 MHz bandwidth and -16.5 dB for a 2 GHz bandwidth, the BER being lower than the forward error corrector limit. At the maximum bandwidth of 2 GHz a transmission rate of 5.36 Gbit/s is achieved.

Vineyards represent one of the main crop systems of greatest importance in the world economy, both in terms of the value chain of wine production and in its current expression of generating tradable goods. One of the challenges of grape production is grapevine health, which annually forces the winegrowers to incur fixed costs associated with the prevention and/or treatment of pests and diseases, causing an impact on the environment due to the application of phytosanitary products. Among the various diseases affecting grapevines, downy mildew ( Plasmopara viticola ) stands out, which causes negative impacts throughout the phenological cycle, particularly on leaves by affecting the absorption of photosynthetic pigments and consequent chlorophyll production, ultimately influencing grape yield and quality. Traditional methods for detecting vineyard diseases are often insufficient in crop protection, favoring new forms of a more agile decision support with timely responses. Proximal sensing trough optical sensors can assist in early disease detection. In this context, thermal infrared sensors stand out for their ability to capture changes in thermal response of leaves due to changes in grapevine metabolism and photosynthetic production. This study aims to explore the use of thermal infrared imagery to assess the detection of downy mildew by evaluating temperature variations in the surface of grapevine leaves when compared with non-infected leaves in a vineyard plot of the cv. Loureiro. The effects of temporal and spatial variability on the temperature of mildew-infected vine leaves are reported. A temperature variation of 2.71 °C was found within the same leaf when comparing to infected and non-infect areas. As the infection progresses over time, thermal variation tends to increase.

The Eight Hop Test is a physical rehabilitation exercise involving jumping with one leg in a circuit similar to the number eight. This study aims to analyze data related to the performance of the test, relating it to gender and pathologies in the population. A mobile application was implemented to acquire accelerometer data, which was then analyzed using various artificial intelligence methods. The study found reliable accuracy in identifying participants’ gender (60%) and specific pathologies (50%), suggesting that mobile sensors can effectively support medical evaluations. Neural Network showed the highest accuracy for multivariate data, while the k-Nearest Neighbor was most effective for binary classifications. The mobile device-based method helps healthcare professionals measure physical strength evolution in lower limb injuries and predicts pathologies with near-100% accuracy using machine learning methods. Future research will explore more individuals and data to improve healthcare treatments and explore new techniques and analyses.

We report the first findings of an empirical study aimed at investigating how COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the work practices and lifestyles of digital nomads (DN). To do this, we analyzed messages, questions and comments posted by digital nomads in a specific online discussion community of the Reddit social network. Preliminary findings indicate COVID-19 as an opportunity to test DN lifestyle by aspiring digital nomads who want to plan their careers and also present evidence of an overload of online channels for actual DNs. On the other hand, we found that much of the literature on digital nomadism is fragmented and scattered through different disciplines and perspectives, with a strong focus on digital nomads' lifestyles. In order to obtain a holistic and unified understanding of digital nomads, we conducted a comprehensive literature review to further conceptualize the phenomenon under study.

This paper develops a novel short-term load forecasting technique to predict the demanding power for the next hour. In this study, a linear equation-error Auto Regressive Auto Regressive Moving Average Exogenous (ARARMAX) model is trained to specify power consumption as a function of a few past hours. The parameters of the candidate mathematical model are estimated by using two least squares-based iterative algorithms. The main difference with these algorithms is the total number of past data involved in the modeling. Whereas practical data are always subject to noise and un-accurate measuring, a wavelet de-noising technique is utilized to reduce the effect of noise on forecasting which leads to more precise predictions. The superiority of the proposed approach is validated by utilizing practical data from a power utility in Canada in January 1995. The first three days' data are utilized to train the selected model and the fourth-day data are dedicated to test the prediction of the provided model. The L 2 and L ∞ norms error and MAPE, MAE, and RMSE are selected as criteria to show the merits of the proposed approach.

European energy strategy towards decarbonization, and its practical implementations in the different EU countries, will imply a continuous increase of variable (non-dispatchable) renewable energy (VRE), like wind and solar PV generation. This increasing VRE along with the progressive closing of current greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting plants, will decrease the net demand (inflexible demand minus non-dispatchable generation), reducing the amount of dispatchable generation needed to face both low VRE periods and larger net demand ramps. These problems need to be assessed to anticipate possible mismatches between net demand values and ramps, and the available resources with generation and ramping capabilities, so that the security and quality of supply is guaranteed. In case of expected risk, regulatory mechanisms, such as new market clearing rules or incentives to new flexibility sources or to new generation and storage technologies, could be required. This paper looks at the possible evolution of the Portuguese power system focusing on the net demand ramp problem. The historical and expected evolution of the hourly ramps of the net demand are analyzed considering different scenarios of high wind and solar PV penetration, according to different degrees of convergence to the EU energy strategic objectives. © 2019 IEEE.

Governance has a significant impact on the success of programs and projects. However, governance of collaborative university-industry projects and programs in literature, is a rather scarce topic. Based on an ethnographic study of a large university-industry collaboration, this paper proposes a conceptual framework of Organizational Enablers (OEs) to improve the governance of collaborative university-industry R&D programs. An exploratory research was carried out, aiming to learn from the experience of program and project managers and other program stakeholders of the case under study. Qualitative data was collected using participant observation and document analysis. The framework highlights nine OEs: `Established governance policies and values', `Formal Governance support structures', `Flexible organization structures', `Standardization of program and project management practices', `Different management approaches to fit the project needs', `Clearly defined roles and responsibilities', `Different means of communication and interaction', `Top management Support' and `Projects strategic alignment within the industry and university roadmaps'.

There are several works and research related to the formation of Collaborative Networks (CN). The participation of an Organization in a Collaborative Network is a theme of broad spectrum and of great interest in research, although it appears that it continues to be far from being fully explored. The objective of this work is centred on the identification of the critical success factors (CSF) that can serve as a basis for reaching a suitable model that assesses whether the participation of an Organization in a CN brings sustainability gains. This work analyses some models or studies available in the literature and identifies important CSF. The Triple Bottom Line (TBL), related to environmental, social, and economic effects is considered to guide the selection and categorization of these CSF. Regarding the results obtained, it appears that there is still large room for improving the research in this field, for instance, regarding further development of a robust and flexible evaluation model based on the identified CSF taking into account the TBL of the sustainability concept for each Organization considering its participation in a CN. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. A paracetamol concentration-sensing scheme based on a linear cavity fiber laser configuration is demonstrated experimentally. The laser cavity has a fiber sensor at one end, that allows refractive index measurements. The refractometer consists of a cleaved fiber tip combined with an FBG functioning as a reflecting mirror. The combination of a fiber loop mirror at the other end allows to reflect all the light from the FBG and refractometer, forming a linear cavity. By measuring the intensity variation of the Fresnel reflection at the fiber-to-liquid interface, the measured concentration is linear and have a concentration sensitivity of [[EQUATION]] µW/(g/kg), over a range of 52.61 to 219.25 g /kg, and with a resolution of 2.77 g/kg. The results obtained present great stability and prove the potential of the fiber laser system to performed real-time measurements of concentration, in a non-invasive way. © 2023, The Authors.
