Intensive summer course in robotics – Robotcraft

This paper describes a two-month summer intensive course designed to introduce participants with a hands-on technical craft on robotics and to acquire experience in the low-level details of embedded systems. Attendants started this course with a brief introduction to robotics;learned to draw, design and create a personalized 3D structure for their mobile robotic platform and developed skills in embedded systems. They were familiarize with the practices used in robotics, learning to connect all sensors and actuator, developing a typical application on differential kinematic using Arduino, exploring ROS features under Raspberry Pi environment and Arduino – Raspberry Pi communication. Different paradigms and some real applications and programming were addressed on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. Throughout the course, participants were introduced to programming languages (including Python and C++), advanced programming concepts such as ROS, basic API development, system concepts such as I2C and UART serial interfaces, PWM motor control and sensor fusion to improve robotic navigation and localization. This paper describes not just the concept, layout and methodology used on RobotCraft 2017 but also presents the participants knowledge background and their overall opinions, leading to focus on lessons learned and suggestions for future editions. © 2018, N.M. Among conventional generation technologies in Spain, Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT) is the one that has experienced the largest development over the first decade of the 21st century. However, despite its promising future, multiple factors (such as the renewable generation increase, demand decline, adverse regulatory policies, etc.) have compromised their competitive position, reducing their capacity factor and undermining their financial viability. Because of those issues, electricity companies are giving up on new CCGTs investments, or even considering closing or mothballing some of their recently built plants. However, many still claim for the necessity of maintaining flexible backup technologies to cope with the variability of renewable energies, as a transition technology until energy storage or other future technologies emerge. This paper makes a profitability analysis of CCGTs in the Spanish electric power sector under different scenarios of RES penetration, carbon plants decommissioning, CO 2 emission costs and EV penetration.

Demand Response (DR) mechanisms have been developed to reshape consumption patterns in face of price signals, enabling to deal with the increasing penetration of intermittent renewable resources and balance electricity demand and supply. Although DR mechanisms have been in place for some time, it is still unclear to what extent end-users are ready, or willing, to embrace DR programs that can be complex and imply adjustments of daily routines. This work aims to understand how the next generation of Portuguese decision makers, namely young adults in higher education, are prepared to deal with energy decisions in the context of the challenges brought by the smart grids. Results demonstrate that cost savings and the contribution to environmental protection are found to be important motivating factors to enroll into DR programs, which should be further exploited in future actions for the promotion of end-user engagement. Moreover, DR solutions are well-accepted by higher education students, although with limited flexibility levels. In addition, there is room to exploit the willingness to adopt time-differentiated tariffs, yet savings should be clearer and more attractive to end-users. Also, the framing effect should be considered when promoting this type of time-differentiated tariffs. © 2019, ICST institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

Many Generation Expansion Problems (GEP) models have been proposed in the literature based on agent-based equilibria or cost-minimization, integrated in bilevel or single-level models. In the simplest (and unrealistic) single-level cost minimization GEP with only the balance constraint, it can be proved that optimal generation investments are recovered through the system marginal cost, meaning that the Net Present Value (NPV) is 0. However, in more complex representations with additional constraints (such as technical or minimum capacity system constraints) non-profitable investments might occur, i.e., their NPV can go below 0. The aim of this work is to provide insights on how introducing complexity into GEP models affects the investments with and without imposing positive NPV as new constraints. The non-linearities in the NPV formulation are solved with a novel iterative algorithm. The main conclusion from the case studies is that the cost minimization GEP model forcing positive NPV can help to better represent the behavior of energy market players and simulate oligopolistic energy markets without explicitly representing profit maximization.

In multi-label classification problems an example can be simultaneously classified into more than one class. This is also a challenging task in Data Streams (DS) classification, where unbounded and non-stationary distributed multi-label data contain multiple concepts that drift at different rates and patterns. In addition, the true labels of the examples may never become available and updating classification models in a supervised fashion is unfeasible. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Label Stream Classification (MLSC) method applying a Novelty Detection (ND) procedure task to update the classification model detecting any new patterns in the examples, which differ in some aspects from observed patterns, in an unsupervised fashion without any external feedback. Although ND is suitable for multi-class stream classification, it is still a not well-investigated task for multi-label problems. We improve a initial work proposed in [1] and extended it with a new Pruned Sets (PS) transformation strategy. The experiments showed that our method presents competitive performances over data sets with different concept drifts, and outperform, in some aspects, the baseline methods.

Project NuClim (Nuclear observations to improve Climate research and GHG emission estimates) aims to use high-quality measurements of atmospheric radon activity concentration and ambient radioactivity to advance climate science and improve radiation protection and nuclear surveillance capabilities. It is supported by new metrological capabilities developed in the EMPIR project 19ENV01 traceRadon. This work reviews the scientific objectives of project NuClim in terms of both climate science and radiological protection, and provides an overview of the NuClim field campaign and the various nuclear measurements being implemented within the scope of the project.

Wearable biomonitoring platform for the assessment of stress and its impact on cognitive performance of firefighters: An experimental study

Background: Stress is a complex process with an impact on health and performance. The use of wearable sensor-based monitoring systems offers interesting opportunities for advanced health care solutions for stress analysis. Considering the stressful nature of firefighting and its importance for the community’s safety, this study was conducted for firefighters. Objectives: A biomonitoring platform was designed, integrating different biomedical systems to enable the acquisition of real time Electrocardiogram (ECG), computation of linear Heart Rate Variability (HRV) features and collection of perceived stress levels. This platform was tested using an experimental protocol, designed to understand the effect of stress on firefighter’s cognitive performance, and whether this effect is related to the autonomic response to stress. Method: The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) was used as a testing platform along with a 2-Choice Reaction Time Task. Linear HRV features from the participants were acquired using an wearable ECG. Self-reports were used to assess perceived stress levels. Results: The TSST produced significant changes in some HRV parameters (AVNN, SDNN and LF/HF) and subjective measures of stress, which recovered after the stress task. Although these short-term changes in HRV showed a tendency to normalize, an impairment on cognitive performance was found after performing the stress event. Conclusion: Current findings suggested that stress compromised cognitive performance and caused a measurable change in autonomic balance. Our wearable biomonitoring platform proved to be a useful tool for stress assessment and quantification. Future studies will implement this biomonitoring platform for the analysis of stress in ecological settings. © 2018 Rodrigues et al.

Transthyretin Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP) is a rare and disabling neurological disorder caused by a mutation of the transthyretin gene. One of the disease's characteristics that mostly affects patients' quality of life is its influence on locomotion, with a variable evolution timing. Quantitative motion analysis is useful for assessing motor function, including gait, in diseases affecting movement. However, it is still an evolving field, especially in TTR-FAP, with only a few available studies. A single markerless RGB-D camera provides 3-D body joint data in a less expensive, more portable and less intrusive way than reference multi-camera marker-based systems for motion capture. In this contribution, we investigate if a gait analysis system based on a RGB-D camera can be used to detect gait changes over time for a given TTR-FAP patient. 3-D data provided by that system and a reference system were acquired from six TTR-FAP patients, while performing a simple gait task, once and then a year and a half later. For each gait cycle and system, several gait parameters were computed. For each patient, we investigated if the RBG-D camera system is able to detect the existence or not of statistically significant differences between the two different acquisitions (separated by 1.5 years of disease evolution), in a similar way to the reference system. The obtained results show the potential of using a single RGB-D camera to detect relevant changes in spatiotemporal gait parameters (e.g., stride duration and stride length), during TTR-FAP patient follow-up.
