technologies related to the transportation electrification have been gaining attention in recent years. One technology that stands out is wireless charging, which still presents numerous challenges in terms of design and optimization of parameters. This article proposes a design methodology for optimizing the performance of an inductive power transfer (IPT) for wireless charging of electric vehicles, taking into account operating limits. The proposed methodology uses a PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm to find the design variables that maximize the eficiency. The methodology and the development of a 3.6 kW experimental setup are presented, resulting in a power transfer efficiency of 89.4 %. © 2023 IEEE.

The EUniversal project aims to facilitate the use of flexibility services and to link distribution system's active management with electricity markets. In the framework of this project and based on optimal power flow simulations, the paper assesses the available flexibility of distributed generation and new loads, and their impact on operational planning of the electricity network under different conditions. In particular, it highlights the important role flexibility provided by electrical vehicles can play. Case Studies of Development of Verified Programs with Dafny for Accessibility Assessment 1

Formal verification techniques aim at formally proving the correctness of a computer program with respect to a formal specification, but the expertise and effort required for applying formal specification and verification techniques and scalability issues have limited their practical application. In recent years, the tremendous progress with SAT and SMT solvers enabled the construction of a new generation of tools that promise to make formal verification more accessible for software engineers, by automating most if not all of the verification process. The Dafny system is a prominent example of that trend. However, little evidence exists yet about its accessibility. To help fill this gap, we conducted a set of 10 case studies of developing verified implementations in Dafny of some real-world algorithms and data structures, to determine its accessibility for software engineers. We found that, on average, the amount of code written for specification and verification purposes is of the same order of magnitude as the traditional code written for implementation and testing purposes (ratio of 1.14) – an "overhead" that certainly pays off for high-integrity software. The performance of the Dafny verifier was impressive, with 2.4 proof obligations generated per line of code written, and 24 ms spent per proof obligation generated and verified, on average. However, we also found that the manual work needed in writing auxiliary verification code may be significant and difficult to predict and master. Hence, further automation and systematization of verification tasks are possible directions for future advances in the field. © 2023, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of sigma-delta modulation (SDM) as a means of improving the performance of underwater optical communication systems. The study considers the impact of the key parameters of SDM, including oversampling ratio, the system's signal-to-noise ratio, bandwidth, and optical link distance. The results of this study provide insights into the design and optimization of SDM-based underwater optical communication systems, paving the way for future research in this field. A fully digital solution, albeit operating at a lower bit rate than previously published OFDM counterparts, provides immunity against nonlinearities of the system and robustness to noise, which is relevant in harsh environments. Moreover, the proposed solution based on a first-order bandpass SDM architecture avoids the employment of a DAC at the receiver, simplifying its operation and reducing costs. An experimental investigation is carried out for the transmission of 16-QAM over SDM, and a transmission distance of 4.8 m over the underwater channel is achieved with a maximum transmission rate of 400 Mbit/s with an MER of 28 dB. © 2023 IEEE.

The optic disc (OD) and the fovea are relevant landmarks in fundus images. Their localization and segmentation can facilitate the detection of some retinal lesions and the assessment of their importance to the severity and progression of several eye disorders. Distinct methodologies have been developed for detecting these structures, mainly based on color and vascular information. The methodology herein described combines the entropy of the vessel directions with the image intensities for finding the OD center and uses a sliding band filter for segmenting the OD. The fovea center corresponds to the darkest point inside a region defined from the OD position and radius. Both the Messidor and the IDRiD datasets are used for evaluating the performance of the developed methods. In the first one, a success rate of 99.56% and 100.00% are achieved for OD and fovea localization. Regarding the OD segmentation, the mean Jaccard index and Dice’s coefficient obtained are 0.87 and 0.94, respectively. The proposed methods are also amongst the top-3 performing solutions submitted to the IDRiD online challenge. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

For the context of a mobile tracking system, an underwater acoustic positioning system was developed, using three hydrophones to compute the direction of an acoustic source relative to an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV). The paper presents an algorithm for the Direction of Arrival (DoA) of an acoustic source, which allows to estimate its position. Preliminary results will be shown in this paper relative to the detection and identification (ID) of the acoustic sources, as well as an analysis of the proposed algorithm. The solution allows the position estimation of an acoustic source, which can be used in tracking solutions. The system can be applied in an ASV or fixed buoys, as long as the baseline's hydrophones are at equal angular distances. The main objective is to track targets with the DoA algorithm as well to estimate their position, improving what was done in [1]. © 2019 Marine technology Society.

This paper presents the concept of a tapered deep neural network, subject to unsupervised training layer by layer, under a criterion of maximum entropy, to perform the estimation of breaker status in the absence of a specific sensor signal. The almost perfect prediction power of the model confirms the conjecture that the knowledge of the topology of a network is hidden in the electric measurement values in the network. A test case is presented with computing speed accelerated by using a GPU (graphics processing unit). The comparison with a previous model illustrates the superiority of the novel approach. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper compares the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) and NSGA-III to solve multiobjective sectorization problems (MO-SPs). We focus on the effects of the parameters of the algorithms on their performance and we use statistical experimental design to find more effective parameters. For this purpose, the analysis of variance (ANOVA), Taguchi design and response surface method (RSM) are used. The criterion of the comparison is the number of obtained nondominated solutions by the algorithms. The aim of the problem is to divide a region that contains distribution centres (DCs) and customers into smaller and balanced regions in terms of demands and distances, for which we generate benchmarks. The results show that the performance of algorithms improves with appropriate parameter definition. With the parameters defined based on the experiments, NSGA-III outperforms NSGA-II. © 2020 IEEE.

Direct Search Algorithm for Load Frequency Control of a Time-Delayed Electric Vehicle Aggregator

This paper addresses the topic of frequency regulation of a single-area power system connected to an electric vehicle (EV) aggregator over a non-ideal communication network. It is considered that the command control action is received by the EV aggregator with constant delay and the power system includes uncertain parameters. Due to the presence of uncertainties and the delay term, the frequency regulation problem is non-convex and hard to solve. The present approaches in the literature convert the non-convex control design problem into a convex problem with a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs), which is conservative and in many cases results infeasibility. In this paper, an innovative iterative algorithm, called direct search, is employed for the time-delayed system to design the unknown parameters of a pre-assumed controller. The controller choice is not limited and various controllers' structures can be assumed. Without loss of generality, a proportional-integral (PI) controller is designed. The novel direct search algorithm can determine a feasible solution whenever at least one solution lays in the design space. Hence, by selecting a wide design space, we can anticipate that the PI controller guarantees closed-loop stability. Numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the performance of the developed controller compared to the state-of-the-art approach. IEEE

The authors present a series of sea trails with autonomous systems using a long-range communication network. The continuous monitoring of the oceans and realtime data gathering/monitoring is a key issue in future marine challenges. To have long range communication, between land and ships at tens of kilometers', the authors used the BlueCom+ project research trials and tested their robotic systems. Bluecom+ project intends to fill the gap of long range communication with high bandwidth. It was demonstrated the usefulness of the system using autonomous systems, such as a small unmanned vehicle (ROAZ USV) for bathymetric mapping and tested an underwater acoustic positioning and communications system. © 2017 Marine technology Society.
