Microgrids are poised to become the building blocks of the future control architecture of electric power systems. As the number of controllable points in the system grows exponentially, traditional control and optimization algorithms become inappropriate for the required operation time frameworks. Reinforcement learning has emerged as a potential alternative to carry out the real-time dispatching of distributed energy resources. This paper applies one of the continuous action-space algorithms, proximal policy optimization, to the optimal dispatch of a battery in a grid-connected microgrid. Our simulations show that, though suboptimal, RL presents some advantages over traditional optimization setups. Firstly, it can avoid the use of forecast data and presents a lower computational burden, therefore allowing for implementation in distributed control devices.

In order to develop the new industrial paradigm, it is necessary to explore a framework supported by planning and operational tools. Indeed, it becomes clear that more and more the next factories need to be increasingly more flexible, agile and knowledge-based in order to be able to adapt in real time to the continuously changing market demands, technology options and regulations, as well as accelerate the design process and optimise production. Therefore, in this paper a framework capable of supporting the factory planning will be presented based on predefined templates and product requirements. Furthermore, the Factory Templates will allow for process deployment, control and evaluation in real-time. © 2011 AISTI.

Globalization and the rapid market changes increased the perception in the Portuguese footwear industry that success in the value chain is closely tied to information sharing, the creation and development of collaborative networks, and the management of the knowledge of the various partners. Business to Business (B2B) and e- Commerce (eC) are a key opportunity, and at the same time, a challenge for contemporary companies. We believe that the insights provided in this paper allow theory and practice to better understand the reasons for the success of the Portuguese footwear industry and of its key cluster of Felgueiras. Based on the research conducted, we argue that there is a lack of B2B-eC initiatives in the footwear industry and the existing ones are still incipient. Furthermore, the existence of only one platform that to some extent addresses B2B-eC, also indicates that there is a need for greater research and development of approaches/technology allowing companies to explore opportunities to collaborate and negotiate among themselves. © 2017 by SCITEPRESS - Science and technology Publications, Lda. The EUniversal project, funded by the European Union, aims to establish a universal approach to the utilization of flexibility by Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and their engagement with new flexibility markets. To achieve this objective, the project team has focused on developing the Universal Market Enabling Interface (UMEI) concept. This paper presents an overview of the process of adapting grid core systems to interact with different market platforms and agents, which is a key aspect of the real-world demonstration set to take place in Portugal. © The Institution of engineering and technology 2023.

This paper presents a Multicriteria Decision Aid methodology for planning energy storage and sustainable mobility, in an isolated system. The objective of this research is to enhance the sustainability of the analyzed case study (São Miguel Island), by comparing a set of alternatives for energy storage and sustainable mobility. The alternatives characterization and evaluation is made through the calculation of meaningful attributes, namely: carbon emissions, overall costs and reliability. An analysis of the most interesting alternatives is also performed. © 2011 IEEE.

Empirical Literature on Economic Growth, 1991–2020: Uncovering Extant Gaps and Avenues for Future Research

The factors required to achieve sustainable economic growth in a country are debated for decades, and empirical research in this regard continues to grow. Given the relevance of the topic and the absence of a comprehensive, systematic literature review, we used bibliometric techniques to examine and document several aspects in the empirical literature related to growth, from 1991 to 2020. Five main results are worth highlighting: (a) the share of empirical articles on economic growth show a clear upward trend;(b) among all the groups of countries considered, the emerging economies (EEs) have received the most scientific attention;(c) the economic growth processes of the Latin American and Caribbean EEs have observed negligible scientific attention;(d) the very long-run studies comprise a residual share among the empirical literature on growth;(e) the extant empirical studies on economic growth have addressed mainly the impact of “macroeconomic conditions.” Our findings suggest there is a need to redirect the empirical growth agenda, so as to encourage more scientific attention devoted to the analysis of key determinants of economic growth in the very long run. There should also be increased scrutiny of the processes of economic growth in Latin American and Caribbean EEs © 2021 Emerging Markets Forum, Washington DC.

Environmental policies could accelerate the replacement of Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEV) by Plug-in-Electric Vehicles (PEV) in many countries. However, in countries where these policies are still not implemented (for example those with no significant PEV subsidies like Spain), technical and economic criteria can also be relevant to assess the future PEV penetration. This work develops a new long-term expansion model that computes the share of PEV and ICEV based on economic criteria, including the impact of PEV on the electricity price and generation mix. The model minimizes the power and transport system costs (investment, operation and maintenance costs, etc.) considering electricity and private transportation needs. Results provide insight on the combined evolution of the renewable generation and of the PEV and ICEV future fleets in Spain, considering environmental constraints such as those imposed by the European Commission. © 2018 IEEE.

In the Smart Grid environment, it is expected that Home Energy Management systems (HEMS) should be capable of managing appliances inside the house, in order to provide reserve services. This paper aims at estimating the flexibility of a Portuguese typical residential load diagram. For this purpose, a bottom-up approach is used, i.e., the aggregated flexible load demand is determined taking into account the availability of each appliance to be controlled by the HEMS. The comfort requirements of the consumers are also incorporated in the flexibility calculations by integrating realistic load models into HEMS.

This paper proposes a “grey-box” dynamic equivalent model for medium voltage active distribution networks, taking into account a heterogeneous fleet of generation technologies alongside the latest European grid codes requirements. It aims to properly represent the transient behavior of the system upon large voltage disturbances in the transmission side. The proposed equivalent model is composed by four main components: two equivalent generation units, one for converter-connected units' representation, and another accounting for the synchronous generation units' portfolio; an equivalent composite load model; and a battery energy storage system, also converter-connected to the grid. The model's parameters are estimated by an evolutionary particle swarm optimization algorithm, by comparing a fully-detailed model of a medium voltage distribution network with the equivalent model's frequency domain's responses of active and reactive power flows, at the boundary of distribution-transmission interface substation.

The integration of inverter-based distributed generation challenges the implementation of an reliable protection This work proposes an adaptive protection method for coordinating protection systems using directional overcurrent relays, where the settings depend on the distribution network operating conditions. The coordination problem is addressed through a specialized genetic algorithm, aiming to minimize the total operating times of relays with time-delayed operation. The pickup current is also optimized. Coordination diagrams from diverse fault scenarios illustrate the method's adaptability to different operational conditions, emphasizing the importance of employing multiple setting groups for optimal protection system performance. The proposed technique provides high-quality solutions, enhancing reliability compared to traditional protection schemes.
