This paper concerns low-cost implementation of built-in repair analysis (BIRA) for embedded memories. As embedded memories become more and more dominant in system-on-chip (SoC) design, it is very crucial to achieve sufficiently high embedded memory yield. Due to the increasing number of diversified embedded memories on chip, external memory testing and redundancy repair analysis become inadequate and the use of BIRA becomes more attractive and even indispensable. The essential challenge of BIRA design is to how to minimize its unnegligible implementation cost without sacrificing the achievable repair rate. The key feature that distinguishes this work from prior work is that, motivated by the fact that almost all the embedded memories use error correction code (ECC) for soft error tolerance, we propose to appropriately leverage such existing built-in error correction capability to enable very low-cost BIRA implementations while maintaining the same and even higher defect repair rate and the same soft error tolerance. With this underlying theme, this paper presents a specific design solution, and its effectiveness and advantages over existing solutions has been successfully demonstrated using computer simulations.

Estimation of time-varying and sparse channels is a topic that has attracted considerable interest lately, especially for underwater acoustic communication. In the context of multicarrier transmission, several important questions remain unanswered: i) should pilots be placed in clusters as for time-varying, non-sparse channels, or randomly dispersed between the data as common in the Compressive Sensing literature; ii) as pilot and data subcarriers cannot be perfectly separated at the receiver due to intercarrier interference (ICI) should channel estimation be based on observations corresponding to pilot subcarriers only, or can the data subcarriers be used to practically extract additional information about the channel; and iii) how does the performance vary with the number of pilot symbols? We use data recorded at the recent CalCom'10 experiment to investigate these questions. We find that a sufficient number of adjacent observations is required to estimate the ICI, which can either be achieved by a pilot design that uses clustered pilots, or by using data subcarriers as additional observations. When using data subcarriers as observations, the effect of the unknown data should be modeled as increased noise. Finally, by varying the number of pilot subcarriers, we can trade off error performance for data rate.

Basis Pursuit (BP) finds a minimum ℓ 1 -norm vector z that satisfies the underdetermined linear system Mz = b, where the matrix M and vector b are given. Lately, BP has attracted attention because of its application in compressed sensing, where it is used to reconstruct signals by finding the sparsest solutions of linear systems. In this paper, we propose a distributed algorithm to solve BP. This means no central node is used for the processing and no node has access to all the data: the rows of M and the vector b are distributed over a set of interconnected compute nodes. A typical scenario is a sensor network. The novelty of our method is in using an optimal first-order method to solve an augmented Lagrangian-based reformulation of BP. We implemented our algorithm in a computer cluster, and show that it can solve problems that are too large to be stored in and processed by a single node.

In today's renewable energy power generation systems, inverters have become key devices connected between energy sources and power grids. The newly presented quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) has the unique advantages of boosting DC bus voltage without additional boost link, lower component ratings, as well as constant DC input current compared with the traditional Z-source inverter. To better design the control schemes of this novel topology, the small-signal model is deduced using state variables perturbance mathematical analysis. By this model, the voltage-current closed-loop control of shoot-through duty cycle is designed. The space vector PWM (SVPWM) technique is modified to satisfy the particularity of qZSI. Simulation results certify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed model and control strategies and demonstrate the applicability of qZSI technology to overcome the disturbances from DC link or AC loads in renewable energy power generation systems.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) presented the 2010 Fall Symposium Series on November 11-13, 2010. The eight symposia included Cognitive and Metacognitive Educational systems, Commonsense Knowledge, Complex Adaptive systems: Resilience, Robustness, and Evolvability, Computational Models of Narrative, Dialog with Robots, Manifold Learning and Its Applications, Proactive Assistant Agents and Quantum Informatics for Cognitive, Social, and Semantic Processes. Cognitive and Metacognitive Educational systems aimed to provide a comprehensive definition of metacognitive educational systems that is inclusive of the theoretical, architectural, and educational aspects of this field. The AAAI Commonsense Knowledge Fall Symposium had the goal of bringing together the diverse elements of this community whose work benefits from or contributes to the representation of general knowledge about the world. One of the specific goals of Proactive symposium was to gather the researchers from various projects in assistant agents to share their wisdom in retrospect.

We propose a systems design procedure to integrate mechanical design, structural prototyping, and servo evaluation through careful comprehension of the servo-mechanical-prototype production cycle commonly employed in mechatronic industries. Our approach focuses on the Modal Parametric Identification (MPI) of key feedback parameters for fast exchange of design specifications and information to enable efficient conduct of product design evaluations and support schedule compression of the R&D project life cycle. Using the commercial Hard Disk Drive (HDD) as a case example, we demonstrate how our approach allows inter-disciplinary specifications to be communicated amongst engineers from different backgrounds to speed up the R&D process for the next generation of intelligent manufacturing. This provides the project management team with powerful decision-making tools for project strategy formulation, and improvements in project outcome are potentially massive because of the low costs of change.

This paper presents a social interactive robot Nancy that has been developed in Social robotics Laboratory, National University of Singapore. Fundamentally different from factory robots, Nancy's design focuses on social interaction and social intelligent system. The design objectives and consideration are examined in the beginning, followed by the description of hardware and software architectures. Contrast to current existing social robots, Nancy has a graphical user interface (GUI), which acts as an additional channel for human-robot interaction. This GUI helps users to have a better understanding of Nancy's internal states and hence make users feel more comfortable during the interaction with Nancy. Visitors' interaction experience with Nancy is discussed together with Nancy's social skills.

We report on the design and the collection of a multi-modal data corpus for cognitive acoustic scene analysis. Sounds are generated by stationary and moving sources (people), that is by omni-directional speakers mounted on people's heads. One or two subjects walk along predetermined systematic and random paths, in synchrony and out of sync. Sound is captured in multiple microphone systems, including a four MEMS microphone directional array, two electret microphones situated in the ears of a stuffed gerbil head, and a Head Acoustics, head-shoulder unit with ICP microphones. Three micro-Doppler units operating at different frequencies were employed to capture gait and the articulatory signatures as well as location of the people in the scene. Three ground vibration sensors were recording the footsteps of the walking people. A 3D MESA camera as well as a web-cam provided 2D and 3D visual data for system calibration and ground truth. Data were collected in three environments ranging from a well controlled environment (anechoic chamber), an indoor environment (large classroom) and the natural environment of an outside courtyard. A software tool has been developed for the browsing and visualization of the data.

Offline analysis pipelines have been developed and evaluated for the detection of covert attention from electroen-cephalography recordings, and the detection of overt attention in terms of eye movement based on electrooculographic measurements. Some additional analysis were done in order to prepare the pipelines for use in a real-time system. This real-time system and a game application in which these pipelines are to be used were implemented. The game is set in a virtual environment where player is a wildlife photographer on an uninhabited island. Overt attention is used to adjust the angle of the first person camera, when the player is tracking animals. When making a photograph, the animal will flee when it notices it is looked at directly, so covert attention is required to get a good shot. Future work will entail user tests with this system to evaluate usability, user experience, and characteristics of the signals related to overt and covert attention when used in such an immersive environment. © 2011 IEEE.
