New algorithms for computing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) spectra along different directions are derived and implemented. For computing the DFT spectrum along any given direction (containing N DFT frequencies), a new algorithm is presented that requires N(N-1) additions and a single 1-D FFT. As expected, for a single direction, the directional FFT algorithm is significantly faster than standard 2-D FFT algorithms that compute the entire spectrum (all results are compared against FFTW and FFTPACK). A scalable extension of the unidirectional algorithm for computing the entire DFT spectrum is also derived and implemented. The three most promising features of the new algorithm are that: (i) computation scales nearly linearly with the number of DFT frequencies computed, (ii) the algorithm uses a reduced number of multiplications (yet uses more additions), and (iii) it is more accurate.

We present a stochastic model based technique that uses the concept of deterministic annealing to obtain a generalized solution to the nonconvex optimization problem encountered by many image segmentation techniques. Deterministic annealing [DA] is an elegant and useful tool for clustering and classification. This novel optimization approach works with the efficiency of a deterministic procedure and has been successfully applied to a number of combinatorial optimization problems. We demonstrate effective segmentation of simulated MR brain images and provide a quality measure for accuracy of classification. A generalized deterministic annealing procedure, which works tender a structural constraint of mass or density, has been utilized for this purpose. This method produces a hierarchy of solutions giving segmentation results from a coarse to a fine level. Automatic edge detection can be performed using these solutions that are at different degrees of coarseness. The procedure has been made more efficient by utilizing a new similarity parameter from the concepts of neuro-fuzzy clustering.

The dominant architecture for mobile robot perception uses sensors on-board the robot, providing a first-person perspective on the environment. We demonstrate a novel mobile robot architecture that uses an environment-based sensor network, which provides third-person perception. The idea is that a mobile robot working in the area tunes in to broadcasts from the video camera network (or in this case from an environment-based computer processing the video frames) to receive sensor data. This distributed sensing configuration offers several advantages over on-board sensing.

We describe an algorithm to fuse intensity data from multiple video cameras to create a spatial-temporal occupancy map. The camera layout is assumed to resemble a security video network. The occupancy map is a two-dimensional raster image, uniformly distributed in the floor-plane. Each map pixel contains a binary value, signifying whether the designated floorspace is empty or occupied. Our algorithm requires only one difference and one look-up table operation to determine each pixel's effect upon the map. This brevity of operations allows the spatial occupancy map to be temporally computed at real-time video rates. We demonstrate our algorithm operating in several dynamic scenarios.

Path planning for mobile robots using a video camera network

We describe a novel method to plan paths for mobile robots in an environment observed by a network of video cameras. The multiple video streams are fused to generate a spatial-temporal map of freespace. Updated at 5 Hz, this map concurrently locates both static and dynamic obstacles. Our novel method computes a polynomial-shaped path from current position to goal position for each map update (at 5 Hz), thus accomplishing both path planning and dynamic obstacle avoidance simultaneously. We demonstrate our methods operating in several dynamic scenarios, and compare our methods against paths planned using a numeric potential field.

This paper introduces a new image processing technique for rapid analysis and visualization of tagged cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) images. The method is based on the use of isolated spectral peaks in SPAMM-tagged magnetic resonance images. The authors call the phase of an image corresponding to just one of these peaks an angle image, and show that except for a phase-wrapping artifact, an angle image is linearly related to a component of the three-dimensional motion. Using one or more angle images, the authors show how to synthesize conventional tag lines, reconstruct displacement fields for small motions, calculate the optical flow between successive temporal images, and calculate two-dimensional strain. The authors demonstrate the performance of this approach on both real and simulated tagged MR images.

This paper describes a Virtual Environment system designed to aid in training interventional radiologists in inferior vena cava filter placement. It is being developed as part of a VE simulator for a number of surgical and interventional radiology procedures at the laboratory for Advanced computer Applications in Medicine at the George Washington University. In this procedure a filter is placed in the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from the lower portion of the body from reaching the lungs and causing a pulmonary embolus. The simulation is designed to provide both tutorial and testing modes for the filter placement procedure.

This paper considers the problem of vector tomography on an arbitrary bounded domain in three dimensions. Previous work has given the formulas for the reconstructed scalar and vector potential functions in relation to the vector field values inside the domain and on the boundary of the domain. Using these formulas. It is shown that the curl-free component can be reconstructed using only one probe measurement, and the divergence-free component can be reconstructed using only two probe measurements. No boundary measurements are necessary.
