This paper describes the design of a fully programmable multimedia system. The system, which utilizes a single multimedia video processor (MVP), is capable of performing real-time MPEG video and audio encoding at SIF resolution, 30 frames per second. Support is provided for a windows environment, including a scalable video window for viewing decoded video sequences or monitoring video compression in real time. The system is also well suited to perform image processing, 2-D and 3-D graphics, and many other video and audio processing and compression algorithms.

Optical imaging is a technique of radiating light into biological tissue and generating images in order to observe and characterise its anatomy, condition, and function. In the present work, various research needs are examined to systematically develop a list of requirements for a powerful optical imaging research tool. Basing from the requirements, a new system that can match or exceed the capabilities of other existing systems in terms of speed, cost-effectiveness, flexibility and potential for growth is developed. As an enabling technology, this system and its future derivatives, can spur the rate of progress in optical imaging research and pave the way for future clinical use of the technology.

Implementation methods based on cyclic codes are presented for pseudoexhaustive testing of combinational logic networks with restricted output dependency. A modified linear-feedback shift register (LFSR) is used to generate exhaustive test patterns for every output of the circuit. All detectable, combinational faults (those that do not change a combinational circuit to a sequential circuit) in each cone of logic driving a single output are guaranteed to be detected. Examples indicate that LFSRs based on cyclic codes have lower hardware cost and shorter or comparable test lengths than other approaches. These test-pattern generators are well suited to applications where short testing time, low hardware overhead, and 100% single-stuck-at fault coverage are required.< >

In this paper, we describe an algorithm for compression of pre-scan-converted ultrasound tissue data. Between compression ratios of 8:1 and 120:1, we have found that there is a significant reduction in distortion using compression prior to scan conversion rather than after scan conversion. We have also found an additional improvement using wavelets, zerotree quantization and arithmetic coding rather than standard block DCT compression.
