Quantification of 3-Dimensional Confluence-Atrial Morphology in Supracardiac Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection

Background: Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) continues to be a major complication after surgical repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). Recent studies suggest that the morphology of pulmonary venous confluence and the left atrium (LA) is associated with PVS. However, there are limited data on the prognostic value of integrating quantitative confluence-atrial morphology into risk stratification. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the prognostic impact of novel imaging metrics derived from 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography angiography (CTA) modeling on postsurgical PVS (PPVS) in the supracardiac TAPVC (sTAPVC) setting. Methods: Patients undergoing sTAPVC repair in 2017 to 2022 from 3 centers were retrospectively reviewed. Study investigators developed 3D CTA modeled geometric features to quantify confluence-atrial morphology that were analyzed with regard to PPVS. Results: Of the 162 patients (median age 61 days;55% having preoperative pulmonary venous obstruction [prePVO]) included, 47 (29%) with PPVS at a median of 1.5 months ([quartile 1-quartile 3: 1.5-3.0 months]). In the univariable analysis, the indexed total volume of the LA and confluence (iTVLC) and the ratio of the corresponding confluence length to the mean distance between the LA and confluence (CCL/mDBLC ratio) were significantly associated with PPVS. In a multivariable model adjusting for prePVO and age, the iTVLC and CCL/mDBLC ratio independently predicted PPVS (HR: 1.15;95% CI: 1.06-1.25;and HR: 1.20;95% CI: 1.08-1.35, respectively, all P < 0.01). Specifically, an iTVLC ≥20 cm³/m² and a CCL/mDBLC ratio ≥7.7 were significantly associated with a reduced risk of PPVS. Conclusions: Quantification of 3D confluence-atrial morphology appears to offer a deeper and better metric to predict PPVS in patients with sTAPVC. © 2024 The Authors

One of the problems with Smart Transportation is the problem of cost and travel time. This problem is known as the Variable Routing Problem (VRP). In some real cases, in addition to considering route selection, there are limitations on the capacity and time period for the vehicle to serve each customer known as Time Windows, so VRP has developed into Variable Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW). One way to solve VRPTW is to use metaheuristic methods. However, the metaheuristic method has a weakness, which are it can get stuck in local optimums and fail to find better global solutions. To overcome this, a combination with other methods or known as hybrid is needed. The formulation of this research problem is how to develop a Smart transportation model using a metaheuristic hybrid algorithm. The purpose of this study is to develop a Smart transportation model using a metaheuristic hybrid algorithm. The method used is to combine two metaheuristic algorithms, which are the Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) and the Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS). The result of this research is a new algorithm model which is a hybrid between DA and VNS. Through a combination of global exploration using DA and local exploitation using VNS, this algorithm is expected to be able to find a better solution and faster convergence in solving VRPTW problems © 2024 IEEE.

Modeling cellular dynamics from single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data is critical for understanding cell development and underlying gene regulatory relationships. Many current methods rely on single-cell velocity to obtain pseudotime, which can lead to inconsistencies between pseudotime and velocity. It is challenging to simultaneously infer cell pseudotime and gene interaction networks, especially in multi-branch differentiation scenarios. We present single-cell Piecewise Network (scPN), a novel high-dimensional dynamical modeling approach that iteratively extracts temporal patterns and inter-gene relationships from scRNA-seq data. To tackle multi-branch differentiation challenges, scPN models gene regulatory dynamics using piecewise gene-gene interaction networks, offering an interpretable framework for deciphering complex gene regulation patterns over time. Results on synthetic data and multiple scRNA-seq datasets demonstrate the superior performance of scPN in reconstructing cellular dynamics and identifying key transcription factors involved in development compared to existing methods. To the best of our knowledge, scPN is the first attempt at modeling that can recover pseudotime, velocity fields, and gene interactions all at once on multi-branch datasets. Semantic Transformation-Based Data Augmentation for Few-Shot Learning

Few-shot learning (FSL) as a data-scarce method, aims to recognize instances of unseen classes solely based on very few examples. However, the model can easily become overfitted due to the biased distribution formed with extremely limited training data. This paper presents a task specific data augmentation approach by transferring samples from base dataset to the novel tasks in an encoder-decoder paradigm, which guarantees generating semantically meaningful features. Specifically, the feature transfer process is carried out in semantic space. We further impose a compactness constraint to the generated features with the prototypes working as the reference points, which ensures the generated features distribute around the class centers. Moreover, we incorporate the cluster centers of the query set with the prototypes of the support set to reduce the bias of the class centers. With the supervision of the compactness loss, the model is encouraged to generate discriminative features with high inter-class dispersion and intra-class compactness. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-arts on four benchmarks, namely MiniimageNet, TieredimageNet, CUB and CIFAR-FS. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Monocular depth estimation is a fundamental task in computer vision and has drawn increasing attention. Recently, attention-based models and encoder-decoder architectures have led to great improvements in monocular depth estimation. Typically, most of the previous methods used repeated simple up-sampling operations during decoding, which may not make full use of the potential properties of the features extracted by the encoder, and there are problems of inaccurate prediction of the edge and depth maximum region. We propose an attention-based feature fusion module for encoder and decoder. We treat the monocular depth estimation as a pixel-level optimization problem, where the coarsest encoder feature is used to initialize the pixel-level optimization, which is then refined to higher resolution by the proposed attentional feature fusion (AFF). We formulate the prediction problem as ordinal regression over the bin centers that discretize the continuous depth range. It predicts a correspondingly different distribution of bins based on different pictures and we predict bins at the coarsest level using global pooling and MLP layers. In the NYUV2 dataset, the proposed architecture improving original model by 2.5.% and 1.1%, in terms of Log10 and Absolute relative error, respectively.

Generalized eigenvalue problem (GEP) plays a significant role in signal processing and machine learning. This paper proposes a consensus-based distributed algorithm for GEP in multi-agent systems, where data samples are distributively stored across agents. The distributed GEP is reformulated as a consensus optimization, but the presence of its quadratic inseparable constraint makes the considered problem more challenging. To deal with it, a sequential method is proposed combined with the alternating direction method of multipliers, which requires communication between couples of nodes. Theoretical analysis shows the proposed algorithm will converge to the set of stationary solutions. And the numerical experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets validate that the approximated solution is competitive to the ground truth. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Machine Learning (ML) has been widely applied to medical science for decades. As common knowledge, the progress of many diseases is often chronic and dynamic. Longitudinal data, or time-series data, has better descriptions of certain diseases, as it naturally captures the dynamic over time. Venous thromboembolism (VTE), as a regular complication of cancer tumour treatments, has been emphasized in many studies. Recent research has shown that ML algorithms incredibly contribute to VTE risk estimation and prediction. However, existing methods rarely consider the dynamic changes during the development of VTE, and often make decisions based on time-point data, such as the latest blood test results of patients. In this paper, we propose a VTE detection model that takes advantage of capturing dynamic information using time-series data. The model consists of a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based framework with time embedding and Attention mechanism to encode longitudinal features of patients. We test our proposed model on a real-world dataset that contains multiple times of blood test results of patients together with other clinical features. The network is compared with several commonly used ML models in previous VTE studies. The results show that our model outperforms all baseline models, and achieved a state-of-art performance with 80.0% accuracy and 0.881 AUC. © 2024 ACM.

A reduced biquaternion neural network (RQNN) is a new type of neural network framework that has achieved significant success in machine learning. However, as the reduced biquaternion algebra system contains infinite zero divisors, the RQNN is easily trapped in a local minimum and overfitted. We propose a new regularization scheme for the RQNN to address these issues. First, we propose a new operation in the reduced biquaternion domain—the reduced biquaternion complex modulus (RQCM). Second, we analyse the algebraic properties and obtain the geometric meaning of the RQCM. Finally, we design an improved weight decay method using the RQCM. Unlike conventional weight decay methods with matrix norm constraints, the proposed method can better project the reduced biquaternion in terms of the scale and phase. Colour image classification and denoising tasks are used to demonstrate the superior performance of the RQCM over state-of-the-art weight decay methods. Single image rain removal is an important research direction in the field of computer vision. In this paper, the Multi-scale Features Fusion Network (MFFN) is presented for rain removal. MFFN is mainly composed of Multi-features Fusion Module (MFM) and Dual Attention Module (DAM). In the MFM, we make the improved dense block and the dilation convolutions to form the feature extraction branches, which is conducive to improve the receptive fields of network. Subsequently, the bottom-up connection method is adopted between branches to help different branches make full use of image information. Then, feature branches are merged to fusion different features. DAM is consisted of purposed SA Block and standard SE Block. The purpose of DAM is to reduce the non-rain features which is extracted by the network. Experiments show that MFFN can obtain the better result of rain removal than several advanced methods. © 2022 IEEE.

Isoforms refer to different mRNA molecules transcribed from the same gene, which can be translated into proteins with varying structures and functions. Predicting the functions of isoforms is an essential topic in bioinformatics as it can provide valuable insights into the intricate mechanisms of gene regulation and biological processes. Conventionally, gene function labels are standardized in Gene Ontology (GO) terms. However, traditional methods for predicting isoform function are largely limited by the absence of isoform-specific labels, sparse annotations, and the vast number of GO terms. To address these issues, we propose HANIso, a deep learning-based method for isoform function prediction. HANIso leverages a pretrained protein language model to extract features from protein sequences. It also integrates heterogeneous information, such as isoform sequence features, GO annotations, and isoform interaction data, using a Heterogeneous Graph Attention Network (HAN). This allows the model to learn the importance of different sources of information and their semantic relationships through the attention mechanism. Our method can predict function labels at both the gene level and isoform level. We conduct experiments on two species datasets, and the results demonstrate that our method outperforms existing methods on both AUROC and AUPRC. HANIso has the potential to overcome the limitations of traditional methods and provide a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of isoform function. © 2023 IEEE.
