An Internet service system for searching and distributing satellite image maps is developed using IMS (Internet Map Server). IMS is a component solution to serve a generated gif-formatted raster map to Internet users using a pre-generated raster image and spatial data stored in ZEUS/X, the ZEUS object-relational spatial database engine. To a certain defined level, IMS generates the result raster map using a pre-generated raster image, and for a higher level, uses the spatial data stored in ZEUS/X. This hybrid method reduces disk space and map generation time. The SIIS system offers various functions for finding a location using a district name, building name, and map name. The building class is divided into subclasses, e.g. tourism, education, public, etc., to enable one to find a building not only from the detailed subclass but also from the entire building class.

GeoPixel-Ortho as a value-added processing module for generating ortho-rectified images in GeoPixel which is in-house remote sensing software, is introduced. To estimate sensor orientation parameters, a direct linear transform (DLT) method was implemented. The module was tested on an IKONOS scene over the south part of Seoul, Korea. The accurate location of ground control points (GCPs) was obtained by using GPS receivers. Although it was hard to evaluate highly reliable sensor parameters using the DLT model because of a lack of sensor related information, the overall accuracy of horizontal error on the test area was estimated to be between 1 and 2 pixels. Further research on estimating more accurate sensor parameters to improve the performance of the DLT model will be done.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive stereo matching algorithm to encompass stereo matching problems in projective distortion region. Since the projective distortion region can not be estimated in terms of fixed-size block matching algorithm, we tried to use adaptive window warping method in hierarchical matching process to compensate the perspective distortions. In addition, probability theory was adopted to encompass uncertainty of disparity of points over the window in this study. The proposed stereo matching algorithm has been tested on both disparity map and 3D model view. The experimental results show that remarkable improvement is obtained in the projective distortion region.

The purpose of the research presented is to segment a text image printed in both Korean and English into character images, utilizing the structure information in Korean and English characters, and using a Korean, English and mixed language character recognizer. The image cannot be separated by only using the width and height of a character because those of an English character are not constant, contrary to those of a Korean character. Therefore we first classify the image into Korean or English using the structure information in Korean and English characters. If it is determined as a Korean character, we segment it with the average width of Korean characters in the text lines. If it is determined as an English character, we segment it using a classical method to segment touching alphanumeric characters. If it cannot be determined, we find possible cut points using a vertical histogram and use the mixed language recognizer to determine the right cut point. Since our method first classifies a block into Korean or English, it can be run faster than the traditional method that cannot identify the language. Each classified block can be segmented more accurately because more specific knowledge about Korean and English characters can be applied.

Geo-features play a key role in object-oriented or feature-based geo-processing system. So the strategy for how-to-manage and how-to-model the geo-features builds the main architecture of the entire system and also supports the efficiency and functionality of the system. Unlike the conventional 2D geo-processing system, geo-features in 3D GIS have lots to be considered to model regarding the efficient manipulation, analysis and visualization. The authors built a set of 3D geo-features, and each geo-feature contains a set of aspatial data and 3D geo-primitives. The 3D geo-primitives contain the fundamental modeling data such as the height of building and the burial depth of gas pipeline. They separated the additional modeling data on the geometry and appearance of the model from the fundamental modeling data to make the table in database more concise and to allow the users more freedom to represent the geo-object. To get the users to build and exchange their own 3D GIS data, the authors devised a file format named VGFF 2.0(Virtual GIS File Format). It is to describe the three dimensional geo-information in XML (eXtensible Markup Language). They also developed the authoring tools for users to create their own 3D geo-features and geo-objects and to edit and save them in VGFF 2.0 format.

software architectural styles that represent structural characteristics of software programs range from specific ones that can be applied to a particular domain to generic ones that can be applied to any domain. If a specific architectural style is available for the target system to be developed, it is appropriate to apply it together with its associated modeling method. However, no quantitative evaluation on the efficiency of specific architectural styles has as yet been reported. This paper presents a quantitative comparison of two architectural styles: specific and generic software architectural styles. The comparison shows that a specific architectural style combined with its associated modeling method allows us to reduce modeling cost as much as a few scores of percent compared with the generic one combined with its modeling method. The improvement results from the characteristics that (1) a specific software architectural style requires less rewriting of modeling diagrams due to its inherent basic structure and (2) there is less redundant information among modeling diagrams.

We develop a framework for efficiently encoding predictive error frames (PEF) as part of a rate scalable, wavelet-based video compression algorithm. We investigate the use of rate-distortion analysis to determine the significance of coefficients in the wavelet decomposition. Based on this analysis, we allocate the bit budget assigned to a PEF to the coefficients that yield the largest reduction in distortion, while maintaining the embedded and rate scalable properties of our video compression algorithm.

With a very large size image database, there should be a way to search for the similar images efficiently. However, the traditional approaches that have been adopted to retrieve text or scalar values cannot be used because of the multi-dimensionality of the image feature vectors. A new retrieval method that uses one or more scalar values induced from the image vector is proposed. In the proposed method, the scalar values are independently stored as indices to the target feature vectors. With the proposed method, the searching speed is improved approximately 25 times compared to the sequential searching. © 1999 IEEE.

In multimedia services, digital video is one of the most important contents. However, until now the searching and browsing of video have depended on the traditional technologies developed mainly for text, which is obviously insufficient, considering the special characteristics of digital video. A novel video retrieval system that is under development at ETRI is introduced. In designing the system, two major user groups (information providers and end users) are considered. For information providers, the system provides tools that support efficient construction of a video database. For end users, an easy and convenient searching and browsing functionality is provided.
