THE EDGE FLAG ALGORITHM - A FILL METHOD FOR RASTER SCAN DISPLAYS

Contour (polygon) filling is a primitive required in many application areas of raster scan graphics. The bit-map memory in a frame-store display is computationally well suited to this task, as it provides a large scratch pad working space. In this paper, a number of contour filling algorithms based on the read/write properties of the frame-store memory are compared with the classical `ordered-edge-list' approach. Performance is evaluated on a microcomputer controlled frame-store display system in terms of ability to fill correctly, execution speed and processor memory requirements. A new algorithm, based on a more exact definition of an object edge, is presented. This algorithm, denoted edge flag algorithm, is implemented within the frame-store memory. It features high speed, in conjunction with minimal CPU memory requirements, making it ideally suited to hardware or microcode (firmware) implementation.

A liquid-crystal device that performs a two-dimensional intensity-to-spatial-frequency conversion has been investigated for use as an optical transducer. When such a device is used as the input transducer in an optical filtering arrangement, image-intensity levels can be easily manipulated by using appropriate Fourier plane filters. The variable-grating-mode liquid-crystal device is well adapted to performing binary logic operations on images. Results demonstrating the implementation of common logic operations are presented.

The raise of 3D image market is rapid. In previous work [Wang 2008], distortion and grid line bending constraints is adapted to image resizing while important areas remain the same scale. In another previous work [Lang 2010], disparity of input stereo image is remapped, and warped stereo image pairs are manipulated by similar constraints. In our system, we adapt image constraints similar to Lang's work, but for a depth refinement purpose. Original random and sharp depth error causes deformation and large defect of hole-filling. These errors are refined, but with a consequence of blurred depth edge. So we adapt another circuit model constraint to sharpen the depth edge again, but maintain the smoothed results at the same time. This technique is modified from previous work [Grady 2006], pixels are electrical circuit nodes with resistance derived from RGB difference. Generally, temporal smooth in video processing needs information from several frames. But in our system, no multiple frames involve but only current frame. In the same scene, different frames share similar color and shape. Since depth map is refined by 2D image, and temporal 2D images are similar, refined depths tend to be smoothed and sharpened in similar way. Finally, depth map of previous frame is used as an initial depth map of current optimization. Experiment results in Figure 1 & 2 show significant improvement.

A technique for optically performing parallel analog-to-digital conversion on incoherent two-dimensional inputs at real-time rates is described. The system uses a birefringent optical real-time input transducer combined with a detector array and optical thresholding. Quantization and bit plane outputs are produced in parallel without scanning. An experimental system with three-bit accuracy is described.

Non-rigid mutual information (MI) based image registration is prone to converge to local optima due to Parzen or histogram based density estimation used in conjunction with estimation of a high dimensional deformation field. We describe an approach for non-rigid registration that uses the log-likelihood of the target image given the deformed template as a similarity metric, wherein the distribution is modeled using a Gaussian mixture model (GMM). Using GMMs reduces the density estimation step to that of estimating the parameters of the GMM, thus being more computationally efficient and requiring fewer number of samples for accurate estimation. We compare the performance of our approach (GMM-Cond) with that of MI with Parzen density estimation (Parzen-MI), on inter-subject and inter-modality (CT to MR) mouse images. Mouse image registration is challenging because of the presence of a rigid skeleton within non-rigid soft tissue, and due to major shape and posture variability in inter-subject registration. The results show that GMM-Cond has higher registration accuracy than Parzen-MI in terms of sum of squared difference in intensity and dice coefficients of overall and skeletal overlap. The GMM-Cond approach is a general approach that can be considered a semi-parametric approximation to MI based registration, and can be used an alternative to MI for high dimensional non-rigid registration. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

A facial feature classification technique that independently captures both the geometric configuration and the image detail of a particular feature is described. The geometric configuration is first extracted by fitting a deformable template to the shape of the feature (for example, an eye) in the image. This information is then used to geometrically normalize the image in such a way that the feature in the image attains a standard shape. The normalized image of the facial feature is then classified in terms of a set of principal components previously obtained from a representative set of training images of similar features. This classification stage yields a representation vector which can be used for recognition matching of the feature in terms of image detail alone without the complication of changes in facial expression. Implementation of the system is described and results are given for its application to a set of test faces. These results show that features can be reliably recognized using the representation vectors obtained.< >

Establishing correspondence between features in two images of the same scene taken from different viewing angles in a challenging problem in image processing and computer vision. However, its solution is an important step in many applications like wide baseline stereo, 3D model alignment, creation of panoramic views etc. In this paper, we propose a technique for registration of two images of a face obtained from different viewing angles. We show that prior information about the general characteristics of a face obtained from video sequences of different faces can be used to design a robust correspondence algorithm. The method works by matching 2D shapes of the different features of the face. A doubly stochastic matrix, representing the probability of match between the features, is derived using the Sinkhorn normalization procedure. The final correspondence is obtained by minimizing the probability of error of a match between the entire constellations of features in the two sets, thus taking into account the global spatial configuration of the features. The method is applied for creating holistic 3D models of a face from partial representations. Although this paper focuses primarily on faces, the algorithm can also be used for other objects with small modifications. © 2002 IEEE.

A liquid crystal device that performs a two-dimensional intensity-to-spatial frequency conversion has been developed for use as an optical transducer. When such a device is used as the input transducer in an optical filtering arrangement, image intensity levels can be easily manipulated via Fourier plane filters. This variable input intensity-output intensity transfer function has numerous potential applications in image processing. Implementation of a variable level slice operation is discussed and experimental results presented. The VGM LCLV device is also particularly well adapted to performing binary logic operations on 2-D images. This application is discussed, and results demonstrating the implementation of common logic operations are presented. © 1980 SPIE. All rights reserved.
