Estimation of global and regional cardiac function from X-ray recordings acguired during contrast injection is a conventional clinical task which can be thoroughly facilitated by digital image processing techniques. Global left ventricular (LV) function is represented by ventricular volumes and volume changes. These are derived from the projected contours by assuming that the ventricle can be represented by an ellipsoid which has the same projected area and long axis as the ventricular silhouette (accuracy typically 10%) LV contours can be found by various automatic edge detecting techniques, but so far the success rate in clinical settings is less than 100%. Attention for user-friendly correction methods is essential. Applying subtraction of an appropriate other image from the same acquisition run as pre-processing operation improves success considerably. Quantitative analysis of regional ventricular function from these same contours can be applied nowadays ('Regional Ejection Fraction1) but the outcome is dependent on the model of ventricular contraction used. As an alternative, methods are being devised to perceptively enhance the images or some dynamic feature of the image series. Output of such operations may either be a new series, which is displayed dynamically, or a static, 'functional' image. Visual observation of such images should yield detection of abnormalities based on an acquired concept of normalcy. A recent addition to such qualitative images is the generation of 3D shaded ventricular shapes constructed of contours in single or biplane images. In the latter case simultaneous interpretation of both contours has become possible. © 1987 SPIE. All rights reserved.

In medical imaging, registration is used to combine images containing information from different modalities or to track treatment effects over time in individual patients. Most registration software packages do not provide an easy-to-use interface that facilitates the use of registration. 2D visualization techniques are often used for visualizing 3D datasets. RegistrationShop was developed to improve and ease the process of volume registration using 3D visualizations and intuitive interactive tools. It supports several basic visualizations of 3D volumetric data. Interactive rigid and non-rigid transformation tools can be used to manipulate the volumes and immediate visual feedback for all rigid transformation tools allows the user to examine the current result in real-time. In this context, we introduce 3D comparative visualization techniques, as well as a way of placing landmarks in 3D volumes. Finally, we evaluated our approach with domain experts, who underlined the potential and usefulness of RegistrationShop. © Eurographics Workshop on Visual Computing for Biology and Medicine, VCBM 2014. In this work, a new method is proposed for automatic extraction of the left ventricular diastolic transmitral vortex ring from 3D whole-heart three directional Phase Contrast MRI. The proposed method consists of two parts, training and extraction. In the training step, an average reference signature of the complex transmitral vortex ring is captured from training subjects using Laplace-Beltrami spectrum and the Lambda2 method. In the vortex extraction step, the trained signature is used to identify the vortex ring by performing an iterative search for the vortex object with minimum distance from the trained signature. The proposed method is validated on a dataset of 8 healthy volunteers with 32 observed diastolic vortex rings. The method was able to successfully extract 27 diastolic vortex rings from a total of 32. Furthermore, the conducted experiments showed the capability of the proposed method in dealing with vortex shape changes that occur between the phases of early and late diastolic filling. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

The fast development of the internet and the growth of digital contents available led to the development of search engines that facilitate the recovery of information in the Web. However, these engines have limitations mainly when recovering specialized contents. Geospatial data are created by local governments, companies and people, but these data aren't available in a systematized way. In this context, this paper presents a specialized search engine to access and recover geospatial data in the Web, focusing on its main characteristics, architecture, technologies and performance.

Illegal trade and theft of coins appears to be a major part of the illegal antiques market. image based recognition of coins could substantially contribute to fight against it. Central component in the permanent identification and traceability of coins is the underlying classification and identification technology. The first step of a computer aided system is the segmentation of the coin in the image. Next, a feature extraction process measures the coin in order to describe the coin unambiguously. In this paper, we focus on the segmentation task, followed by a comparison of features relevant for coin classification. Results of the algorithms implemented are presented for an image database of ancient coins. © The Eurographics Association 2007.

Summary form only given. Human beings have a remarkable ability to recognize human faces. Though many face recognition methods have been proposed, it is still very difficult to recognize human faces using image processing techniques. In this paper we consider that edges are an important factor for recognizing human faces. It is well known that a caricaturist represents the characteristics of a human being using only several lines. From this point of view, we have a consideration that the edge distribution on a human face becomes a good feature for face recognition. In our algorithms, a face region is segmented from the captured image in the natural office environment and then eyes and mouth are detected Based on the detected eyes and mouth, firstly the rectangular region on a face is bounded by eyes and the lower lip and the edge density of this rectangular region is normalized by the value of 20% edge density. The procedure of edge density normalization are as followings: 1) make distribution histogram of pixels using gray values, 2) determine the threshold gray value at 20% rank from the highest value, 3) select pixels which have a higher gray value than rite threshold value. Secondly, this rectangular area is divided into 10/spl times/10 cells and each cell has the edge distribution value itself. Thirdly, edge distribution of 10/spl times/10 cells are compared to that of model patterns and then the most similar model is selected as the first candidate.

Generic shape recognition is the problem of determining the pose and dimensions of objects for which only shape models are available and the object's size is unknown. One application domain for generic object recognition is the handling and sorting of postal objects. Because metrical information relating object features to one another is not available, the more common feature-based approaches are inadequate. Our system, INGEN (INference engine for GENeric object recognition), uses a data-driven approach to determine the pose and size of objects with generic shapes such as parallelepipeds and cylinders. This system successfully recognizes occluded objects in heaps. It also handles scenes which have irregularities in surfaces and edges - such irregularities are common to postal objects - as well as shadows and irregularities in the range data itself. © 1991 Proceedings - Workshop on Directions in Automated CAD-Based Vision, CADVIS 1991. Compact, portable digital cameras have been popular to consumers. This paper presents a robust feature detection method using particle keypoints and its application to video stabilization. The proposed video stabilization algorithm consists of three steps: i) generation of a flat region map based on the Gaussian filter, ii) robust feature point detection using particle keypoints, and iii) camera paths estimation for enhancing a shaky video. As a result, the proposed algorithm can estimate optimal homography by redefining important feature points using particle keypoints in the flat region map. The proposed robust feature detection algorithm is suitable for enhancing the quality of video acquired by consumer handheld imaging devices. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper addresses inspection of d-dimensional data using ellipsoidal decision regions for problems in automated visual inspection. For the special case of d = 3, the proposed method is researched in detail with respect to efficient real-time operation and compact storage of ellipsoid parameters. In order to reduce storage requirements, a method based on clustering the parameters describing the shapes of ellipsoids is proposed. Results are presented for colour images used in the quality analysis step in banknote printing. Additionally, estimations of computational effort and storage requirements are provided.
