In this poster, we present an approach to contex-tualized semantic image annotation as an optimization problem. Ontologies are used to capture general and contextual knowledge of the domain considered, and a genetic algorithm is applied to realize the final annotation. Experiments with images from the beach vacation domain demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach and illustrate the added value of utilizing contextual information.

A digital folk song search and retrieval system with a hand gesture based interface is presented. Tillarom is a comprehensive collection of original Hungarian folk songs recorded using different technologies such as phonographs and/or stereo DAT cassettes. This digital archive contains professional quality metadata records as well as MIDI recordings for presenting the different types of clustered folk songs. An AJAX based search and retrieval interface was developed that can be used together with optically recognized Kodály's hand signs to formulate queries through a web browser. The appearance based recognition of hand gestures utilizes contour analysis and SVM based classification. We evaluated the performance of the recognition of hand signs and investigated the main problems of their usage in our system. Copyright 2006 ACM.

In the area of geophysical and mining engineering the solution of partial differential equations (PDE) has been one of the most important problems of mathematics for a long time. In this paper, design principles and application of a thin and flexible intravascular top hat monopole probe with increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and improved longitudinal and radial coverage are described and compared with the conventional monopole probe. The top hat probe is constructed by removing a segment of the shield of a coaxial cable. A flexible thin copper foil in contact with the inner conductor of the cable is added to the end section of the cable. The copper foil acts as an antenna top hat load increasing the uniformity of the current distribution on the probe and establishes a uniform region of SNR distribution around the probe. Improvement of the SNR distribution of the top hat probe relative to the conventional monopole probe is evaluated using quantitative indices. Experimental results show that for the top hat probe, the ratio of the maximum image SNR to its relative standard deviation (SR) is 2.73 times higher than that of a conventional probe. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this paper, we propose an efficient lossless intra coding by embedding a pixel-wise residual prediction into the H.264/AVC. The H.264/AVC was designed for lossy video coding so that it could not yield the best performance for lossless video coding. In this paper, we applied a pixel-wise prediction to the residual signal generated by the H.264 intra prediction. We found that the proposed method is better than the conventional H.264/AVC FREXT lossless coding mode in terms of coding efficiency. The proposed lossless coding algorithm achieves around 12-21% bit saving against the H.264/AVC FREXT high profile for several test sequences.

This paper presents an extended emulated digital retina model to compute two different retina channels in video real-time. The proposed emulated digital implementation of the two-channel retina model was compared to the previously developed single channel model from three different points of view: processing speed, number of physical cells and accuracy. A real-time test environment with camera input and display output is going to be set up to analyze the retina model implementation on emulated digital CNN (Cellular Neural/Nonlinear Network) model by using a 6M gate equivalent FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array).

Motivated by the success of free-parts based representations in face recognition, we have attempted to address some of the problems associated with applying such a philosophy to the task of speaker-independent visual speech recognition. A major problem with canonical area-based approaches in automatic visual speech recognition is the dependence these approaches have on locating and tracking the speaker's region of interest (ROI) correctly. By employing a free-parts representation, we assume that the position/structure of patches within the mouth image can be relaxed so they can "freely" move to varying extents, hence reducing the influence of the front-end effect. In this paper, we show that by using a free-parts representation we gain some robustness against the problem of ROI localisation and tracking compared to current area-based feature extraction techniques such as the discrete cosine transform (DCT). Also in this paper, we expose the importance of representation for the task of visual speech recognition highlighted by the poor results current representations yield. © 2005 IEEE.

Motivated by the success of free-parts based representations in face recognition [1] we have attempted to address some of the problems associated with applying such a philosophy to the task of speaker-independent automatic speech reading. Hitherto, a major problem with canonical area-based approaches in automatic speech reading is the intrinsic lack of training observations due to the visual speech modality’s low sample rate and large variability in appearance. We believe a free-parts representation can overcome many of these limitations due to its natural ability to generalize by producing many observations from a single mouth image, whilst still preserving the ability to discriminate between various visual-speech units. This approach additionally requires a modification to traditional techniques employed for the estimation of hidden Markov Models (HMMs), whose resultant models we currently refer to as free-parts HMMs (FP-HMMs). Results will be presented on the CUAVE audiovisual speech database. © AVSP 2005. All rights reserved.

In the multi-user VR game, wide stereoscopic display is an important component that supports immersion and perception to the gamer. Because the space in front of the display allows multi-participants to collaborate and guarantees view with the entire field of view for each user. This paper describes a method to integrate user interfaces for interactions among users wear VR devices on wide stereoscopic display. The key technologies of our proposed system include the problems of coordination with various devices to treat user events in real-time, synchronization of PC clusters which renders the VR contents, and seamless display of multi-channel display surfaces. To accomplish this, we propose a VR game display platform composed of multi-projectors, stereoscopic see-through head mounted device, and gesture recognition system for collaborative interactions. Our preliminary results showed that the proposed strategy well suits high resolution application at real-time frame rate for VR game. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
