In this paper, we present a fast lossless compression scheme for digital map images in the raster image format. This work contains two main contributions. The first is centered around the creation of a code book that is based on symbol-entropy. The second contribution is the introduction of a new row-column reduction algorithm. Our scheme proceeds as follows: we determine the number of different colors in a given map image. For each color, we create a separate bi-level data layer, one for the color and the second is for the background. Then, we compress each bi-level layer individually using the proposed method, which is based on symbol-entropy in conjunction with our row-column reduction coding algorithm. Our experimental results show that our lossless compression scheme achieved on average a compression equal to 0.035 bits per pixel which is better than most reported results in the literature or comparable to some. Moreover, our scheme is simple and fast.

In this paper we propose a model-based binary image compression scheme. In this scheme, we merge one-dimensional (1-D) blocks of black pixels of the input binary image with those in consecutive rows into larger blocks using mathematical models that preserve the quality of the image. This process reduces the number of vertices when the image is segmented into rectangles for compression. The top-left and the bottom-right vertices of each generated rectangle are then identified and the coordinates of which are efficiently encoded. The model for merging the blocks was obtained through extracting the data values involving the blocks of various widths and the subjective tolerance of an average viewer. The data values are then plotted on a Cartesian plane and approximated with linear, logarithmic, and polynomial functions. Simulation results show that the images after merging using the proposed model have less number of rectangles without any obvious image distortion and have higher compression ratio those rectangular partitioning methods in the literature.

Fiber tracking is a mature technique that aids neurosurgeons by providing the location of neuronal fibers in a patient's brain. Although the interactivity of tools have been typically limited, the exploitation of the parallel nature of fiber tracking is rapidly changing this landscape. The parallel environment offered by GPUs and modern CPUs enables fiber tracking to be executed very quickly on consumer-grade computers. The adjustment of fiber tracking parameters can currently be made on the fly, and the new results can be both computed and displayed in real-time on the screen. In order to further improve the interactivity of fiber tracking tools, this article proposes the application of histogram equalization, a traditional digital image processing procedure, to the fiber tracking parameters. The non-linear scale obtained by this process allows the user to interactively explore sensitive regions of the parameter space. Results show that this scale can be computed in real-time and that it can be cleanly integrated into fiber tracking tools.

In recent years, an unparalleled volume of textual information was transported over the Internet via email, chatting, blogging, twittering, digital libraries, and information retrieval systems. As the volume of text data has exceeded 40% of the total volume of traffic on the Internet, compressing textual data becomes imperative. Many algorithms were introduced and employed for this purpose including Huffman encoding, arithmetic encoding, the Ziv-Lempel family, Dynamic Markov Compression, and Burrow-Wheeler Transform. In this paper, a novel algorithm for compressing textual images is presented. The algorithm comprises of two parts: (i) a fixed-to-variable codebook; and (ii) row and column reduction coding scheme, RCRC. Simulation results on a large number of Arabic textual images show that this algorithm has a compression ratio of approximately 87%, which exceeds published results including those of JBIG2.

In this paper1, we propose an eLearning activity control model that is used to efficiently and graphically defining SCORM's content aggregation model and its sequencing prerequisites through a formal approach. In terms of the representation of the eLearning activity sequencing, the SCORM2 content aggregation model uses a XML-based and rule-driven approach, which is called an activity-tree, over a tree-structured content organization. However, it is unwilling to say that the activity-tree approach be an efficient way, because the course developer is required to be complete-understanding about the SCORM's complicated sequencing rerequisites and other extensions. Therefore, the model proposed in this paper aims to realize the concept of process-driven eLearning content aggregating approach. Eventually the proposed model becomes a theoretical basis for implementing a process-driven eLearning aggregation modeling and enactment system satisfying the SCORM's sequencing prerequisite specifications. We strongly believe that the eLearning activity control model and its system deliver a way of much more convenient work in composing SCORM's content aggregation models and in implementing eLearning management system as well. © 2008 IEEE.

The exponential growth of text data on the World Wide Web as well as on databases off line created a critical need for efficient text summarizers that significantly reduce its size while maintaining its integrity. In this paper, we present a new multigraph-based text summarizer method. This method is unique in that it produces a multi-edge-irregular-graph that represents words occurrence in the sentences of the target text. This graph is then converted into a symmetric matrix from which we can produce the ranking of sentences and hence obtain the summarized text using a threshold. To test our method performance, we compared our results with those from the most popular publicly available text summarization software using a corpus of 1000 samples from 6 different applications: health, literature, politics, religion, science and sports. The simulation results show that the proposed method produced better or comparable summaries in all cases. The proposed method is fast and can be implement for real time summarization.

Spine MRI images generally have the characteristics of low contrast and much noise. Because the variable shape of the spine edge, the traditional spine image segmentation method requires a lot of preprocessing and can not perform image segmentation automatically, which is inefficient and cannot compliant the clinical work requirements. So as to solve the above problems, this paper use deep learning algorithms to identify the spine images, and proposed a disc herniation recognition method for spinal MRI images which based on DenseNet fusion model. Use DenseNet and Inception-Resnet-V2 model fusion to get more image features and improve the image recognition accuracy. Experiments prove that this method can be used to identify the herniation of spinal intervertebral disc with high accuracy and real-time. © 2020 IEEE.

We present evaluation results with focus on combined image and efficiency performance of the Gradient Network Method to segment color images, especially images showing outdoor scenes. A brief review of the techniques, Gradient Network Method and Color Structure Code, is also presented. Different region-growing segmentation results are compared against ground truth images using segmentation evaluation indices Rand and Bipartite Graph Matching. These results are also confronted with other well established segmentation methods (EDISON and JSEG). Our preliminary results show reasonable performance in comparison to several state-of-art segmentation techniques, while also showing very promising results comparatively in the terms of efficiency, indicating the applicability of our solution to real time problems.

Measuring image quality is an interesting and challenging area of research. In this paper we investigate the performance of the statistical functions called copula as image quality measures. These functions are popular for applications where data distributions are unknown. This property motivated some researchers to using these copulas in image processing in general and in detecting image changes and image registration in particular. In this research, we use the Gaussian copula to calculate the mutual information, which is the measure of the association of the reference and the distorted or tampered with images. To test the performance of the proposed method, we implemented our method on LIVE image database and compared our results with three popular image quality measures namely Visual Information Fidelity (VIF), Structural Similarity (SSIM), and Universal Quality Measure (UQI). The results show that our quality measure, obtained similar results to the three methods in 99% of the time, hence the proposed method can be considered as an efficient image quality index.

Architectural elements are the components and details of buildings. Their unique set, combination, design, construction technique form the architectural style of buildings. Building facade classification by architectural styles is viewed as a task of classifying separate architectural structural elements. In the scope of building facade architectural style classification the current paper targets the problem of classification of Gothic and Baroque architectural elements called tracery, pediment and balustrade. Since certain gradient directions dominate on the shape of each architectural element, discrimination between dominating gradients means classification of architectural elements and thus architectural styles. We use local features to describe gradient directions. Our approach is based on clustering and learning of local features and yields a high classification rate.
