A new path planning method for UAV in static workspace is presented. The method can find a nearly optimal path in short time which satisfies the UAV kinematic constraints. The method makes use of the skeletons to construct the graph of the planning space considering the configuration of the obstacles and utilizes the graph to find a shortest collision-free path, and a novel technique is utilized to convert the free path into a feasible path. The method can be applied to different applications and easy to be implemented. Experimental results showed that the path planning can be done in a fraction of second on a contemporary workstation (2-3 seconds) under the condition of satisfying the kinematic constraints. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Intensive task-oriented repetitive physical therapies need be provided by individualized interaction between the patients and the rehabilitation specialists to improve hand motor performance for those survived from stroke and traumatic brain injury. The goal of this research is to develop a novel wearable device for robotic assisted hand repetitive therapy. We designed a pneumatic muscle (PM) driven therapeutic device that is wearable and provides assistive forces required for grasping and finger extension. The robot has two distinct degrees of freedom at the thumb and all other fingers. The embedded sensors can feedback position and force information for robot control and quantitative evaluation of task performance. It is potential of providing supplemental at-home therapy in addition to in the clinic treatment. To realize the trajectory tracking control, a fuzzy PID controller is designed for the proposed device. The experimental results show angle tracking control of the robotic hand using the fuzzy PID controller has better performance than that using a conventional PID controller.

In this article, a method of image registration based on Feature Space of Distance (FSD) between points is firstly introduced into dim and small target detection in deep space background. This algorithm uses the feature space to calculate the transform parameters and realizes the dim and small target detection through the suppression of the star background. The experimental results indicate that our method is effective and can be applied to automatic target recognition (ATR) system. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a method for digital image stabilization based on Fourier-Mellin transform and phase correlation. We acquire the rotating angle and scaling factor firstly by phase correlation between Fourier-Mellin transform images of the reference and observed images. After rotating and scaling the observed image, implement the phase correlation again to compute the spacial translation. Because of spectral periodicity, the correlation between Fourier-Mellin transform images will be weaken and maybe lead to wrong result when the rotating angle is close to 90°. So we add a coarse search before phase correlation to avoid this situation. And we use a smooth window to reduce the noise in phase correlation. Furthermore, a coordinate mapping chart is recommended to avoid the unnecessary computation cost during creating log-polar image. The experiment results show the proposed method can acquire accurate motion parameters between two adjacent frames.

Multi-view approach has been proposed to solve occlusion and lack of visibility in crowded scenes. However, the problem is that too much redundancy information might bring about false alarm. Although researchers have done many efforts on how to use the multi-view information to track people accurately, it is particularly hard to wipe off the false alarm. Our approach is to use multiple views cooperatively to detect objects and use objects silhouette on planes of different height to remove false alarm. To achieve this we adopt a novel multi-planar homography constraint to resolve occlusions and false alarm. Experimental results show that our algorithm is able to accurately locate people in crowded scene maintaining correct correspondences across views. Moreover, the false alarm rate is obviously reduced.

The statistic of RV-coefficient is a good substitute for the Pearson correlation coefficient to measure the temporal similarity of two local brain regions. However, the hypothesis test of RV-coefficient is a hard problem which limits its application. This paper discussed the problem in details. Since the distribution of RV-coefficient is unknown, we do not know a critical p-value to statistically test its significance. We proposed a new strategy to test the significance of RV calculated from fMRI. In order to approximate the p-value, we elicited the first two moments of the population permutation distribution of RV;we then derived a formula to more closely approximate the normal distribution with these transformed statistics. These transformations of statistics are suggested for a precise approximation to the permutational p-value even under large number of observations. This strategy of test can greatly reduce the computational complexity and avoid "calculation catastrophe", we then use the statistic of RV to extract the map of functional connectivity from fMRI and test its significance with the strategy proposed here. © 2009 SPIE.

By researching the Brushlet domain coefficients of texture images, we found that the distribution of the magnitudes of Brushlet domain coefficients roughly meet rayleigh distribution. And there are correlations between Brushlet coefficients in adjacent scales. Therefore, Rayleigh Mixture Model (RMM) is used to characterize the statistics of the magnitudes of Brushlet coefficients. To capture the inter-scale persistence of Brushlet coefficients, a "four to four" models with markov property is adopted in this paper. On the basis, by combining with the multi-scale Bayesian segmentation method, we propose a multiscale Bayesian texture segmentation algorithm that is based on a Brushlet domain hidden Markov tree (BruHMT) model. The experiment results indicate that our method is feasible and effective. Especially for coarse texture, our method is superior than texture segmentation method using Wavelet domain hidden Markov tree (WHMT) model. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

The study of the second order motion in biological vision is a new source of inspiration for algorithms and research directions in computer vision. In this paper, the second order motion can be divided into three typical group according to the modulation types: spatial modulate motion, temporal modulate motion and spatio-temporal modulate motion. Experiments are conducted on the first order motion perception based on correlation model and the second order motion perception by correlation model preceded with a nonlinear process called texture grabber. The computational results are consistent with the previous suggestion that the second order motions are processed by nonlinear system.

Convolution is an important and useful operation in the fields of digital signal processing. In this paper, based on the previous work of performing discrete Fourier transform (DFT) via linear sums of discrete moments, we have made development to eliminate multiplications in discrete Fourier transforms by performing appropriate bit operations and shift operations in binary system, which can be implemented by integer additions of fixed points; then using the convolution theorem with the DFT, we compute the convolution with two DFTs, a point-by-point product, and an inverse DFT. Our algorithm involves fewer multiplications and can deal with arbitrary length signals.

A novel hybrid multiobjective estimation of distribution algorithm is proposed in this study. It combines an estimation of distribution algorithm based on local linear embedding and an immune inspired algorithm. Pareto set to the continuous multiobjective optimization problems, in the decision space, is a piecewise continuous (m-1)-dimensional manifold, where m is the number of objectives. By this regularity, a local linear embedding based manifold algorithm is introduced to build the distribution model of promising solutions. Besides, for enhancing local search ability of the EDA, an immune inspired sparse individual clone algorithm (SICA) is introduced and combined with the EDA. The novel hybrid multiobjective algorithm, named HMEDA, is proposed accordingly. Compared with three other state-of-the-art multiobjective algorithms, this hybrid algorithm achieves comparable results in terms of convergence and diversity. Besides, the tradeoff proportions of EDA to SICA in HMEDA are studied. Finally, the scalability to the number of decision variables of HMEDA is investigated too.
