In this paper a model-based dual-channel noise reduction approach is presented which is an alternative to conventional noise reduction algorithms essentially due to its independence of the noise power spectral density estimation and of any prior knowledge about the spatial noise field characteristics. We use a mixture of circular-symmetric complex-Gaussian distributions projected on the unit hypersphere for modeling the complex discrete Fourier transform coefficients of noisy speech signals in the frequency domain. According to the derived mixture model, clustering of the noise and the target speech components is performed depending on their direction of arrival. A soft masking strategy is proposed for speech enhancement based on responsibilities assigned to the target speech class in each time-frequency bin. Our experimental results show that the proposed approach is more robust than conventional dual-channel noise reduction systems based on the single- and dual-channel noise power spectral density estimators.

This article deals with stability investigation of state-space fixed-point discrete system using saturation nonlinearity and external interference. A criterion for exponential stability is proposed via a passivity-based approach for an externally interfered nonlinear discrete system. For the discrete system with saturation overflow nonlinearity, we have analyzed the passive behaviour under the effects of external interference and asymptotic stability with zero interference. A comparative study is made available with the previously reported result to highlight the worth and relaxed nature of the proposed work. The criterion developed is in linear matrix inequality (LMI) settings and therefore, numerically less complex. Numerical simulations are made available to showcase the productiveness of the obtained criterion.

Few-shot learning aims for rapid adaptation with few samples. Recently, cross-granularity few-shot learning has emerged as a promising research area, where models observe coarse labels but target fine-grained recognition among novel classes. As coarse supervision tends to eliminate feature discrimination among underlying sub-classes, existing methods commonly utilize self-supervision as a complement to explore intra-class variation. However, current methods suffer from an intrinsic conflict between contrastive learning and coarse supervision. In this paper, we locate the root cause of the intrinsic conflict. Then, we resolve it by exploiting the similarity among augmented views while ignoring the unreasonable constraint between negative pairs. Besides, we decouple contrastive learning and coarse supervision into parallel branches to better regularize the latent space. Albeit simple, our approach consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods across different benchmarks.

Color correlogram for content-based image retrieval (CBIR) characterizes not only the color distribution of pixels, but also the spatial correlation of pairs of colors. Color not only reflects the material of surface, but also varies considerably with the change of illumination, the orientation of the surface, and the viewing geometry of the camera. The invariance to these environmental factors is not considered in most of the color features in color based CBIR including the color correlogram. However, pixels changed their color with almost same proportions with change of environmental factors. This fact is taken into consideration, and new algorithm is proposed. The color cooccurrence matrix for different spatial distances is defined based on the maximum/minimum of color component between the three components (R,G,B) of a pixel. The proposed algorithm has less number of features, and the change of illumination, etc. is also taken into account. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Deconvolution has become one of the most used methods for improving spectral resolution, and blind deconvolution as a typical method has been researched widely. However, the predefined point spread function (PSF) used in blind deconvolution method is not known exactly in practice. In general, the PSF is estimated simultaneously from the observed spectrum, but it becomes difficult when the spectroscopic data are polluted by strong noise. In this paper, we present a deconvolution method used to improve the resolution of THz spectrum. In the method, the energy function is constructed, which includes the likelihood term, Total variation of spectrum term and L2 norm of the PSF term. The PSF is modeled as a parametric function combination with the a priori knowledge about the characteristics of the instrumental response. The spectrum and the parameter of PSF are obtained by minimizing the energy functional using alternate minimization approach. Experimental results are shown to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method used for THz spectrum.

Visually salient object or region detection in images is an active research field in recent years. Inspired by that curvelets can provide multi-scale sparse representation of objects with edges and textures, in this paper, we propose a novel saliency detection model based on fast discrete curvelet transform (SDCT) to detect more compact salient objects in an image. First, fast discrete curvelet transform is used to acquire multi-scale representation of feature maps in CIElab color space. Then the feature maps are transformed to feature salient maps based on dissimilarity measure between patches in a global manner. Finally, the complementary feature salient maps at each scale and each color channel are merged linearly to obtain unitary saliency map. Experimental results on MSRA saliency benchmark database show that the proposed SDCT model outperforms the most state-of-the-art saliency detection models in spatial and frequency domain with higher overall performance, especially acquires more compact salient object and suppresses background saliency effectively, which is desirable for many computer vision applications.

Sign Language Recognition using Spiking Neural Networks

In recent years, research in automatic Sign Language Recognition (SLR) has undergone significant progress, serving as a founda-tional base for developing applications that aim to promote the integration of deaf individuals into society. Most of this progress is owed to the recent developments in deep learning. However, the deployment of conventional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) can be hindered by their requirements in terms of computational power and energy consumption. Therefore, to improve the ef-ciency of current SLR systems, in this work, we propose the use of the increasingly popular Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), which, on the one hand, provide more energy-efficient computations than conventional ANNs and, on the other hand, are able to process temporal sequences with simpler architectures thanks to their temporal dynamics. To evaluate our method, we utilize WLASL300, the 300-word (300 classes of signs) dataset from Word-Level American Sign Language, and achieve an improvement in accuracy with the SNN (+2.70%) over the previous state-of-the-art, when working with energy-efficient spiking neurons. Furthermore, we construct a non-spiking version of the same network and evaluate it in a similar manner. Our results demonstrate how the SNN has sparser activations (25% less), thanks to the use of spiking neurons, and therefore can be implemented with a lower power requirement than an ANN version of the same architecture. This work thus demonstrates the possibility of performing SLR in a very effective and efficient way, thus opening up the development of applications that span from the automatic real-time translation of dynamic signs to remote control utilizing sign languages.

The H.264 video coding standard has a significant performance benefit versus former standards. However, motion compensation decoding process takes up a significant decoding time due to the advanced coding features. In this paper, the theory of motion compensation decoding in H.264 is given at first. Then the improved method is proposed by motion compensation fast decoding algorithm and optimization based on ADI Blackfin533 hardware platform. Both PC and ADI Blackfin533 experimental results show that the proposed optimization strategy can substantially improve the efficiency of real-time H.264 decoder.

Crowd counting still confronts two primary challenges: limited ability to deal with cross density levels caused by fixed density maps and lack of fine-grained or coarse-grained guidance for density estimation. In this paper, a novel end-to-end crowd counting framework via multi-level regression with latent Gaussian maps is proposed, which is consisted of GaussianNet, EstimateNet and Discriminator. GaussianNet is composed of masked Gaussian convolutional blocks and vanillia convolutional layers, to generate latent Gaussian maps adaptively for various density levels. The latent Gaussian maps are then treated as the ground truth density maps for EstimateNet, which outputs density estimations and follows the principle of adversarial learning with Discriminator. Moreover, multi-level losses are combined for density map regression guidance. Extensive experiments on the major public datasets outperform state-of-the-art ones, illustrating the superior validity of the proposed framework.

Attentive semantic exploring for manipulated face detection

Face manipulation methods develop rapidly in recent years, whose potential risk to society accounts for the emerging of researches on detection methods. However, due to the diversity of manipulation methods and the high quality of fake images, detection methods suffer from a lack of generalization ability. To solve the problem, we find that segmenting images into semantic fragments could be effective, as discriminative defects and distortions are closely related to such fragments. Besides, to highlight discriminative regions in fragments and to measure contribution to the final prediction of each fragment is efficient for the improvement of generalization ability. Therefore, we propose a novel manipulated face detection method based on Multilevel Facial Semantic Segmentation and Cascade Attention Mechanism. To evaluate our method, we reconstruct two datasets: GGFI and FFMI, and also collect two open-source datasets. Experiments on four datasets verify the advantages of our approach against other state-of-the-arts, especially its generalization ability. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.
