In this paper, we propose new demapping scheme for the 16-APSK modulation, which reduces the computational complexity of demapping process. Compared to existing soft demapping methods, which calculate a decision metric for each constellation point, and hard demapping, which need a detailed look-up table, the new technique needs a short look-up table and no decision metric is needed to be calculated, thus reducing the complexity. The BER performance simulations reveal that this simplified demapping scheme does not cause any penalty on performance and retains same BER as those of existing techniques.

This work focuses on two of the research problems comprising automatic sign language recognition, namely robust computer vision techniques for consistent hand detection and tracking, while preserving the hand shape contour which is useful for extraction of features related to the handshape and a novel classification scheme incorporating Self-organizing maps, Markov chains and Hidden Markov Models. Geodesic Active Contours enhanced with skin color and motion information are employed for the hand detection and the extraction of the hand silhouette, while features extracted describe hand trajectory, region and shape. Extracted features are used as input to separate classifiers, forming a robust and adaptive architecture whose main contribution is the optimal utilization of the neighboring characteristic of the SOM during the decoding stage of the Markov chain, representing the sign class. Pulse coupled neural networks (PCNN) is a mammal visual cortex-inspired artificial neural networks. Owing to the coupling links in neurons, PCNN is successful to utilize the local information, thus it has been successfully employed in image fusion. However, in traditional PCNN for image fusion, value of per pixel is used to motivate per neuron. In this paper, image feature of per pixel, e.g. gradient and local energy, is used to motivate per neuron and generate firing maps. Each firing map is corresponding to one type feature. Furthermore, a new multi-channel PCNN is presented to combine these firing maps via a weighting function which measures the contribution of these features to the fused image quality. Finally, pixels with maximum firing times, when firing times of source images are compared, are selected as the pixels of the fused image. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms Wavelet- based and Wavelet-PCNN-based fusion algorithms.

Super-Resolution (SR) technique means to reconstruct High-Resolution (HR) images from a sequence of Low-Resolution (LR) observations,which has been a great focus for compressed video. Based on the theory of Projection Onto Convex Set (POCS),this paper constructs Quantization Constraint Set (QCS) using the quantization information extracted from the video bit stream. By combining the statistical properties of image and the Human Visual System (HVS),a novel Adaptive Quantization Constraint Set (AQCS) is proposed. Simulation results show that AQCS-based SR al-gorithm converges at a fast rate and obtains better performance in both objective and subjective quality,which is applicable for compressed video.

In the frame of the HearCom1 project five promising signal enhancement algorithms are validated for future use in hearing instrument devices. To assess the algorithm performance solely based on simulation experiments, a number of physical evaluation measures have been proposed that incorporate basic aspects of normal and impaired human hearing. Additionally, each of the algorithms has been implemented on a common real-time hardware/software platform, which facilitates a profound subjective validation of the algorithm performance. Recently, a multicenter study has been set up across five different test centers in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland to perceptually evaluate the selected signal enhancement approaches with normally hearing and hearing impaired listeners.

As no reference frame can be obtained in Intra-frame error concealment, reducing the degradation of spatial reconstructed image is one of the key techniques in error concealment. In this paper, a novel spatial error concealment algorithm based on fuzzy clustering for Intra-frame in H.264 is proposed. This proposed algorithm gives a new selection of eigenvectors and similarity measurement for fuzzy clustering. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the edge details, achieve a better subjective quality of the recovered image and increase PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) as well.
