The image fusion is an important approach to produce a single complete image which preserves all relevant information from different sensors. In this paper, we proposed a support value transform-based multi focus image fusion method, where the fused saliency features are represented by support values. Based on the mapped least squares support vector machine, the support value transform is developed as a multi-scale analysis tool. The fusing results on the multi focus images demonstrate that the proposed image fusion method is effective and efficient

Modularization facilitates the adaptability of cyber-physical production systems (CPPSs) with a variety of collaborative tasks. Various production rules can be captured by signal temporal logic (STL) specifications imposed on interconnected multi-agent systems (MASs). In this paper, we focus on the controller synthesis of STL tasks for interconnected MASs to accomplish collaborative tasks in modular CPPSs. Firstly, a class of STL specifications characterizing tasks by the combination of fixed-time reachability and finite-time persistence tasks is proposed, which encompasses a large class of production specifications for the MAS. Secondly, the acyclic decomposition of the global STL formula is constructed to enable conflict-free collaborative tasks and unidirectional couplings between subsystems. By establishing the equivalence between the proposition and the state set of the MAS, necessary and sufficient conditions are respectively proposed for the satisfaction of reachability and persistence tasks. In addition, an algorithm is presented to synthesize controllers for the MAS with the global STL specification based on local controllers of subsystems. An illustrative example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) has been applied to restore or maintain the muscle activity of paralyzed patients who suffer from spinal cord injuries and related neural impairments for several decades. In this paper, a portable and low-cost versatile stimulator for multichannel TES applications is described. The microcontroller-based programmable stimulator with four bipolar output channels send arbitrarily specified electrical pulses to the element in the electrode array for enabling the complex schemes of muscles. The amplitude and phase of each pulse in the stimulus sequence are independently variable, and the four channels are independently programmable, allowing a wide variety of stimulus patterns. We also designed an output circuit that can provide bi-phasic, voltage-regulated, charge-balanced outputs while avoiding the electrochemical erosion of electrode due to charge accumulation. The proposed stimulator has provided an opportunity for further study of a potential novel electrical stimulator with closed-loop stimulation paradigm suitable for a variety of FES applications, both for experimental and clinical studies.

MetaEarth: A Generative Foundation Model for Global-scale Remote Sensing image Generation

The recent advancement of generative foundational models has ushered in a new era of image generation in the realm of natural images, revolutionizing art design, entertainment, environment simulation, and beyond. Despite producing high-quality samples, existing methods are constrained to generating images of scenes at a limited scale. In this paper, we present MetaEarth - a generative foundation model that breaks the barrier by scaling image generation to a global level, exploring the creation of worldwide, multi-resolution, unbounded, and virtually limitless remote sensing images. In MetaEarth, we propose a resolution-guided self-cascading generative framework, which enables the generating of images at any region with a wide range of geographical resolutions. To achieve unbounded and arbitrary-sized image generation, we design a novel noise sampling strategy for denoising diffusion models by analyzing the generation conditions and initial noise. To train MetaEarth, we construct a large dataset comprising multi-resolution optical remote sensing images with geographical information. Experiments have demonstrated the powerful capabilities of our method in generating global-scale images. Additionally, the MetaEarth serves as a data engine that can provide high-quality and rich training data for downstream tasks. Our model opens up new possibilities for constructing generative world models by simulating Earth’s visuals from an innovative overhead perspective. © 2024, CC BY.

The solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technique with electric to gas technique is an investment-worthy way to enhance the consumption of renewable energy in microgrids. Moreover, SOFC’s high fuel adaptability and efficient cogeneration are ideal for stationary power generation. However, due to SOFC’s slow load response and high cost, the capacity configuration designation of microgrid with SOFC system is significant. To enhance energy utilization and reduce cost, in this paper, a microgrid connected with an upper grid, containing SOFC, wind turbine (WT), photovoltaics (PV), electrolyzer, a hydrogen storage system (HSS), and lithium battery (LB), is built. Considering the dynamic characteristics of SOFC’s load response, transient and steady-stage’s energy management strategies assisted by LB are proposed. Capacity configuration parameters of microgrid’s components are selected as decision variables and minimal life cycle cost (LCC) and minimal curtailment rate of wind and PV are selected as objective functions. Using proposed strategies to process microgrids, the NSGA-II algorithm is used to optimize. An actual case is studied and appropriate capacity configuration is solved, with 2112 120W PVs,315 500W WTs, 5 10kW • h LBs,5 SOFCs,98.73kW electrolyzer and 38.94kg *** reaches $4.268 × 10 5 and wind &PV’s curtailment rate reaches 5.71%. The result’s rationality is proved by analyzing the detailed cost and operation.

Microgrids subjected to secondary cooperative control encounter significant challenges, including operational constraints and clock drifts, adversely affecting their stability and efficiency. This paper provides conditions that assure optimal microgrid performance in both transient and steady-state scenarios, focusing on the effects of clock drifts and fluctuations in load. Furthermore, we introduce a novel approach for designing secondary control parameters, specifically engineered to minimize steady-state discrepancies attributable to clock drifts while ensuring adherence to standards for transient operations. Comprehensive experimental validations corroborate the effectiveness of our proposed solutions.

Continuously adaptive signal classification in complex electromagnetic environments is a desired property of realistic intelligent systems. However, the limitation of most existing signal processing tasks and methods lies in their assumption of fixed categories and invariant distributions. In contrast, humans naturally acquire knowledge continuously from data streams, enhancing their capabilities through cross-task knowledge integration and learning from the past. Inspired by this, we propose a continuous learning (CL) method based on selective multi-task coordination (SMTC) to deal with ever-changing task categories and distributions in practical electromagnetic environments (denoted as SMTC-CL). Firstly, we propose a signal task distribution comparison (TDC) method that leverages intra-domain density and inter-domain divergence. TDC selectively activates multiple old tasks to collaboration with the current incremental new task. Secondly, we propose the SMTC method. By revisiting potential collaborative tasks from the past using TDC and formulating different selection strategies based on the context, continuous learners can achieve mutual benefits between past and current tasks in SMTC learning. SMTC can partially alleviate catastrophic forgetting and enable continuous learners to adapt to the changing electromagnetic environment. Based on the signal automatic modulation classification (AMC) and real-world specific emitter identification (SEI) datasets, extensive experimental results validate the effectiveness of our proposed method on a variety of CL scenarios, including varying signal task categories, distributions, and their combinations. © 2015 IEEE.

Isoforms refer to different mRNA molecules transcribed from the same gene, which can be translated into proteins with varying structures and functions. Predicting the functions of isoforms is an essential topic in bioinformatics as it can provide valuable insights into the intricate mechanisms of gene regulation and biological processes. Conventionally, gene function labels are standardized in Gene Ontology (GO) terms. However, traditional methods for predicting isoform function are largely limited by the absence of isoform-specific labels, sparse annotations, and the vast number of GO terms. To address these issues, we propose HANIso, a deep learning-based method for isoform function prediction. HANIso leverages a pretrained protein language model to extract features from protein sequences. It also integrates heterogeneous information, such as isoform sequence features, GO annotations, and isoform interaction data, using a Heterogeneous Graph Attention Network (HAN). This allows the model to learn the importance of different sources of information and their semantic relationships through the attention mechanism. Our method can predict function labels at both the gene level and isoform level. We conduct experiments on two species datasets, and the results demonstrate that our method outperforms existing methods on both AUROC and AUPRC. HANIso has the potential to overcome the limitations of traditional methods and provide a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of isoform function.

T-TIME: Test-Time Information Maximization Ensemble for Plug-and-Play BCIs

Objective: An electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) enables direct communication between the human brain and a computer. Due to individual differences and non-stationarity of EEG signals, such BCIs usually require a subject-specific calibration session before each use, which is time-consuming and user-unfriendly. Transfer learning (TL) has been proposed to shorten or eliminate this calibration, but existing TL approaches mainly consider offline settings, where all unlabeled EEG trials from the new user are available. Methods: This paper proposes Test-Time Information Maximization Ensemble (T-TIME) to accommodate the most challenging online TL scenario, where unlabeled EEG data from the new user arrive in a stream, and immediate classification is performed. T-TIME initializes multiple classifiers from the aligned source data. When an unlabeled test EEG trial arrives, T-TIME first predicts its labels using ensemble learning, and then updates each classifier by conditional entropy minimization and adaptive marginal distribution regularization. Our code is publicized. Results: Extensive experiments on three public motor imagery based BCI datasets demonstrated that T-TIME outperformed about 20 classical and state-of-the-art TL approaches. Significance: To our knowledge, this is the first work on test time adaptation for calibration-free EEG-based BCIs, making plug-and-play BCIs possible. © 2024, CC BY.

Nowadays, more and more datasets are stored in a distributed way for the sake of memory storage or data privacy. The generalized eigenvalue problem (GEP) plays a vital role in a large family of high-dimensional statistical models. However, the existing distributed method for eigenvalue decomposition cannot be applied in GEP for the divergence of the empirical covariance matrix. Here we propose a general distributed GEP framework with one-shot communication for GEP. If the symmetric data covariance has repeated eigenvalues, e.g., in canonical component analysis, we further modify the method for better convergence. The theoretical analysis on approximation error is conducted and the relation to the divergence of the data covariance, the eigenvalues of the empirical data covariance, and the number of local servers is analyzed.
