Algorithmic self-assembly, a generalization of crystal growth, has been proposed as a mechanism for the bottom-up fabrication of autonomous DNA computation. In theory, growth can be programmed by designing a set of molecular tiles with binding interactions that enforce assembly rules. There are many interesting applications of the reordering problem in Mathematics, as well as Computer Sciences. It is a useful primitive operation for computation and construction in the field of science and engineering. It is worth exploring more efficient approach to solve this problem. In this paper, we provide a description of a novel method for the reordering problem by use of the programmable tile assembly model. We propose the thought of block assembly model which takes full advantage of the huge parallelism inherent in the tile assembly. On the basis of the structural property, we delicately devise a rule to produce a long reporter strand which can connect all the inputs of the given problem with the final results. It is proved that this method can be extended to any reordering problem with arbitrary size in theory. The great advantage of our schema is that it only needs a constant number of tile types and in time linear with the size of the input problem to solve any reordering problem.

Effects of Epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation and Treadmill Training on Locomotion Function and Ultrastructure of Spinal Cord Anterior Horn after Moderate Spinal Cord Injury in Rats

Objective:To investigate the effects of epidural spinal cord stimulation(ESCS) and treadmill training on the locomotion function and ultrastructure of spinal cord anterior horn after moderate spinal cord injury in ***:Nine adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly distributed into three groups:①spinal cord injury group(SI,n=3).②spinal cord injury plus ESCS group(SE,n=3).③spinal cord injury plus treadmill training group(TT,n=3).All rats received a moderate spinal cord injury *** weeks after surgery,rats in SE group received an electrode implantation procedure,with the electrode field covering spinal cord segments *** weeks after electrode implantation,rats received subthreshold ESCS for 30 min/*** in TT group received 4cm/s treadmill training for 30min/*** in SI group received no intervention,as a control *** procedures in these three groups lasted four *** open field Basso,Beattie and Bresnahan(BBB) scale was used before and after intervention to evaluate rats' hindlimb motor ***:After four weeks intervention,rats in TT group improved their open field locomotion scores to *** contrast,no significant improvement was observed in groups SI and *** morphology of synapses and neurons were similar regardless of whether rats had undergone ESCS,treadmill training or ***:ESCS alone was not sufficient to improve the walking ability of spinal cord injured *** or treadmill training alone might not contribute to the changes of ultrastructure in anterior horn of spinal cord that underlie the recovery of walking *** research is needed to understand the contributions of combination of ESCS and treadmill training to the rehabilitation of spinal cord injured rats.

Multisensor image adaptive fusion based on nonsubsampled contourlet

An adaptive fusion method of multisensor images based on nonsubsampled contourlet transform is proposed in this paper, which can select the fusion weights of the low-frequency coefficients adaptively via golden section algorithm. The nonsubsampled contourlet transform is a flexible multi-scale, multi-direction and shift-invariant image decomposition, which is suitable for representing images bearing abundant detail and directional information. This is employed for fusing the directional high-frequency coefficients. For the directional high-frequency coefficients, the higher adding level of the directional subbands is used to select the better coefficient for fusion. The nonsubsampled contourlet transform can also avoids introducing ringing artifacts to fused images compared to ordinary method. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better fusion efficiency compared to image fusion methods based on Laplacian pyramid transform, wavelet transform, stationary wavelet transform and contourlet transform respectively.

Research advances and prospect of spiking neural P systems

Spiking neural P systems are a new computing model inspired from the biological phenomena that in the brain the neurons cooperate to deal with spikes by axons. Since it has been shown that they have powerful computational capability and potential capability in solving computationally hard problems, more and more people begin to get interested in this field. This paper firstly introduces the formal definition of standard spiking neural P systems and some notions which are often used in this area;then, several extensions of the original spiking neural P systems are summarized, that are: Extented SN P system;SN P system with exhaustive use of rules;Asynchronous SN P system;Sequential SN P system. Also, the results on the topic of spiking neural P systems are briefly recalled in two aspects: computational completeness and computational efficiency. In the end, two more important future research directions on spiking neural P systems are pointed out. Specifically, one interesting topic is to develop a new computing model which is more "realistic";another topic is to consider how to use these models in biological modeling and simulation.

On string languages generated by spiking neural P systems with exhaustive use of rules

We continue the study of (extended) spiking neural P systems with exhaustive use of rules by considering these computing devices as language generators. Specifically, a step is associated with a symbol according to the number of spikes emitted by the output neuron and the sequence of these symbols associated with a halting computation constitutes a string. Two cases are considered: one of them interprets a step when no spike is emitted as a specified symbol, the other interprets such a step as the empty string. In both cases, it is proved that finite and recursively enumerable languages are characterized by extended spiking neural P systems working in the exhaustive mode. The relationships with regular languages are also investigated. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2008.

The design of DNA sequences is one of the most practical and important research topics in DNA computing. We adopt taboo search algorithm and improve the method for the systematic design of equal-length DNA sequences, which can satisfy certain combinatorial and thermodynamic constraints. Using taboo search algorithm, our method can avoid trapping into local optimization and can nd a set of good DNA sequences satisfying required constraints.

Multiobjective optimization using an immunodominance and clonal selection inspired algorithm

Based on the mechanisms of immunodominance and clonal selection theory, we propose a new multiobjective optimization algorithm, immune dominance clonal multiobjective algorithm （IDCMA）. IDCMA is unique in that its fitness values of current dominated individuals are assigned as the values of a custom distance measure, termed as Ab-Ab affinity, between the dominated individuals and one of the nondominated individuals found so far. According to the values of Ab-Ab affinity, all dominated individuals （antibodies） are divided into two kinds, subdominant antibodies and cryptic antibodies. Moreover, local search only applies to the subdominant antibodies, while the cryptic antibodies are redundant and have no function during local search, but they can become subdominant （active） antibodies during the subsequent evolution. Furthermore, a new immune operation, clonal proliferation is provided to enhance local search. Using the clonal proliferation operation, IDCMA reproduces individuals and selects their improved maturated progenies after local search, so single individuals can exploit their surrounding space effectively and the newcomers yield a broader exploration of the search space. The performance comparison of IDCMA with MISA, NSGA-Ⅱ, SPEA, PAES, NSGA, VEGA, NPGA, and HLGA in solving six well-known multiobjective function optimization problems and nine multiobjective 0/1 knapsack problems shows that IDCMA has a good performance in converging to approximate Pareto-optimal fronts with a good distribution.

By introducing a predictive mechanism with small-world connections, we propose a new motion protocol for self-driven flocks. The small-world connections are implemented by randomly adding long-range interactions from the leader to a few distant agents, namely, pseudoleaders. The leader can directly affect the pseudoleaders, thereby influencing all the other agents through them efficiently. Moreover, these pseudoleaders are able to predict the leader’s motion several steps ahead and use this information in decision making towards coherent flocking with more stable formation. It is shown that drastic improvement can be achieved in terms of both the consensus performance and the communication cost. From the engineering point of view, the current protocol allows for a significant improvement in the cohesion and rigidity of the formation at a fairly low cost of adding a few long-range links embedded with predictive capabilities. Significantly, this work uncovers an important feature of flocks that predictive capability and long-range links can compensate for the insufficiency of each other. These conclusions are valid for both the attractive and repulsive swarm model and the Vicsek model.

High performance word level sequential and parallel coding methods and architectures for bit plane coding

This paper introduced a novel high performance algorithm and VLSI architectures for achieving bit plane coding （BPC） in word level sequential and parallel mode. The proposed BPC algorithm adopts the techniques of coding pass prediction and parallel ＆ pipeline to reduce the number of accessing memory and to increase the ability of concurrently processing of the system, where all the coefficient bits of a code block could be coded by only one scan. A new parallel bit plane architecture （PA） was proposed to achieve word-level sequential coding. Moreover, an efficient high-speed architecture （HA） was presented to achieve multi-word parallel coding. Compared to the state of the art, the proposed PA could reduce the hardware cost more efficiently, though the throughput retains one coefficient coded per clock. While the proposed HA could perform coding for 4 coefficients belonging to a stripe column at one intra-clock cycle, so that coding for an NxN code-block could be completed in approximate N2/4 intra-clock cycles. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed designs have high throughput rate with good performance in terms of speedup to cost, which can be good alternatives for low power applications.
