Compact, portable digital cameras have been popular to consumers. This paper presents a robust feature detection method using particle keypoints and its application to video stabilization. The proposed video stabilization algorithm consists of three steps: i) generation of a flat region map based on the Gaussian filter, ii) robust feature point detection using particle keypoints, and iii) camera paths estimation for enhancing a shaky video. As a result, the proposed algorithm can estimate optimal homography by redefining important feature points using particle keypoints in the flat region map. The proposed robust feature detection algorithm is suitable for enhancing the quality of video acquired by consumer handheld imaging devices. © 2016 IEEE.

Mini-drones are increasingly used in video surveillance. Their areal mobility and ability to carry video cameras provide new perspectives in visual surveillance which can impact privacy in ways that have not been considered in a typical surveillance scenario. To better understand and analyze them, we have created a publicly available video dataset of typical drone-based surveillance sequences in a car parking. Using the sequences from this dataset, we have assessed five privacy protection filters via a crowdsourcing evaluation. We asked crowdsourcing workers several privacy- and surveillance-related questions to determine the tradeoff between intelligibility of the scene and privacy, and we present conclusions of this evaluation in this paper.

This paper presents a multi-frame example-based super-resolution (SR) algorithm using locally directional self-similarity. Existing example-based super-resolution algorithms generate patches using multiple training images or single self-image. On the other hand the proposed method minimizes the patch mismatching error by generating a patch dictionary in a local region of multiple, adjacent frames. As a result, the proposed algorithm can remove interpolation artifacts based on a degradation model of low-resolution images. The dictionary is classified by the orientation of patches for fast searching. The proposed algorithm consists of two steps: i) dictionary generation based on the image degradation model and ii) multi-frame image reconstruction for super-resolution. Experimental results show that the proposed SR algorithm provides better reconstructed images with less undesired artifacts than existing methods.

This paper presents a single fisheye lens camera-based visual surveillance system for monitoring a wide area. A fisheye lens has a wider field-of-view (FOV) than normal lenses at the cost of a barrel distortion in the acquired image. After correcting the barrel distortion, the proposed algorithm detects objects, and performs tracking using a histogram-based Gaussian mixture model (GMM). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can efficiently detect objects by reducing the geometric distortion of the input image. For this reason it is suitable for not only surveillance cameras but also consumer applications of video object detection and recognition.

In the first stage, image fusion is employed to create a 'document' and a 'background' image. In the second stage, the FastICA algorithm is used to perform background subtraction. In the third stage, a spatial kernel K-harmonic means classifier binarizes the FastICA output. The proposed system outperforms previous efforts on document image binarization. © 2014 IEEE.

Implantable Medical Devices (IMDs) consist of miniature implantable antenna that is embodied inside and its bidirectional communication is monitored through external monitoring device. This paper presents an implantable miniaturized antenna working in the Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) band and being carried out in human body phantom models representing implantation inside the arm which helped to design the proposed antenna. Furthermore, different characteristics of the antenna such as S parameter, return loss and directivity were contemplated using FR4 substrate material in the same band.

This paper presents a novel super-resolution (SR) algorithm using local self-examples. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps: i) generation of the patch dictionary using multiple-step image blurring, ii) search of the optimum patches using the magnitude and orientation of the image gradient, and iii) combination of the restored and original patches for reducing the patch-mismatching error. Example-based SR methods have a common disadvantage of unnaturally reconstructed edges. The proposed method can reconstruct realistic images by searching patches based on the edge strength in dictionary made by multiple-step degradations. Experimental results show that the proposed SR algorithm provides more natural images with less synthetic artifacts than existing methods. The proposed SR method provides significant improvement in both subjective and objective measures including peak-to-peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity measure (SSIM). © 2014 IEEE.

In this paper, a wavelet sparse representation based beamforming is proposed to improve the resolution and contrast of plane wave emission ultrasound imaging. First, the received signals are described as the convolution of the target scatterers with the point spread function of the system. And then, the wavelet sparse representation model is deduced according to the fact that the target scatterers can be sparse represented in wavelet domain. The proposed algorithm was tested with simulated ultrasound data in plane wave emission. And the results demonstrated that the resolution was clearly improved and contrast ratio gains of 9.8 dB, 4.3 dB and 3.7 dB were obtained compared to delay-and-sum beamformer, minimum variance beamformer and phase coherence factor, respectively.
