Electronic Roads in Historical Documents: A Student Oriented Approach

The new educational approaches, as far as teaching of history in secondary education is concerned, are characterized by a shift away from sterile memorization and towards a critical approach of historical facts and phenomena; the aim is to contribute to both the development of students' historical concept and conscience and the promotion of critical thought. These teaching goals are pursued by promoting initiative of the students through self study assignments in the form of projects; students can be greatly supported in such tasks by computer-based applications, which can offer access to vast amounts of historical texts and data to be used next to the main scholar textbook and be analyzed by students. Still, existing applications seem to be quite inadequate for this purpose, as they require that the student be already informed on a matter, before the initiation of a quest for data. In this paper, we describe an intelligent information system that is designed to facilitate browsing of educational material and historical sources, thus allowing students to efficiently retrieve information on topics that are not yet known to them and expand in this way their historical knowledge. This can help in fulfilling the aforementioned teaching goals. Our system relies on the notion of the Electronic Road.

A new method based on generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) for activation detection in multi-subject studies of functional MRI (fMRI) is proposed. In this method, we test the correlation between the fMRI time series of different subjects and the bases of a signal subspace which increases the flexibility of method in detecting different shapes of hemodynamic response. The proposed multivariate method can be applied to group studies where the conventional cross-correlation method cannot be used due to its univariate property. This method is applied to both experimental and simulated fMRI data and the results are compared to those of general linear model (GLM). We show that the proposed method detects more significant activated regions in analyzing experimental data and more true voxels in simulated data

This paper presents a feature point tracking algorithm using optical flow under the non-prior training active feature model (NPT-AFM) framework. The proposed algorithm mainly focuses on analysis of deformable objects, and provides real-time, robust tracking. The proposed object tracking procedure can be divided into two steps: (i) optical flow-based tracking of feature points and (ii) NPT-AFM for robust tracking. In order to handle occlusion problems in object tracking, feature points inside an object are estimated instead of its shape boundary of the conventional active contour model (ACM) or active shape model (ASM), and are updated as an element of the training set for the AFM. The proposed NPT-AFM framework enables the tracking of occluded objects in complicated background. Experimental results show that the proposed NPT-AFM-based algorithm can track deformable objects in real-time. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

Automatic classification of normal mammograms, which constitute a majority of screening mammograms, is a new approach to computer-aided diagnosis of breast cancer. This approach may be limited, however, by non-separable "crossed" distributions of features that are extracted from digitized mammograms. This work presents a method of mapping such non-separable input features into a new set of separable features that can be utilized, together with ordinary "uncrossed" features, by a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The results of the proposed scheme show improved performance with 80% sensitivity and 95% specificity.

Recent advances in the hardware of handheld devices, opened up the way for newer applications in the healthcare sector, and more specifically, in the teleconsultation field. Out of these devices, this paper focuses on the services that personal digital assistants and smartphones can provide to improve the speed, quality and ease of delivering a medical opinion from a distance and laying the ground for an all-wireless hospital. In that manner, PDAs were used to wirelessly support the viewing of digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) images and to allow for mobile videoconferencing while within the hospital. Smartphones were also used to carry still images, multiframes and live video outside the hospital. Both of these applications aimed at increasing the mobility of the consultant while improving the healthcare service.

We present some of the imaging properties of an optical heterodyne scanning image processor. The image processor is a two-pupil optical system capably of three-dimensional (3-D) imaging coherently or incoherently, depending on the detection scheme used. We will then discuss optical scanning holography (OSH) through the development of the two-pupil optical heterodyne scanning image processor. Last, we illustrate some important 3-D example in OSH and show that two reconstructions can be obtained corresponding to the real and pseudoscopic reconstructions of a conventional hologram. © 2003 Optical Society of America

In this paper we propose a new adaptation technique for improved text-independent speaker verification with limited amounts of training data using Gaussian mixture models (GMMs). The technique, referred to as probabilistic subspace adaptation (PSA), employs a probabilistic subspace description of how a client?s parametric representation (i.e. GMM) is allowed to vary. Our technique is compared to traditional maximum a posteriori (MAP) adaptation, or relevance adaptation (RA), and maximum likelihood eigen-decomposition (MLED), or subspace adaptation (SA) techniques. Results are given on a subset of the XM2VTS databases for the task of textindependent speaker verification.

Research on networked applications that utilize multimodal information about their users' current emotional state are presently at the forefront of interest of the computer vision and artificial intelligence communities. Human faces may act as visual interfaces that help users feel at home when interacting with a computer because they are accepted as the most expressive means for communicating and recognizing emotions. Thus, a lifelike human face can enhance interactive applications by providing straightforward feedback to and from the users and stimulating emotional responses from them. Thus, virtual environments can employ believable, expressive characters since such features significantly enhance the atmosphere of a virtual world and communicate messages far more vividly than any textual or speech information. In this paper, we present an abstract means of description of facial expressions, by utilizing concepts included in the MPEG-4 standard. Furthermore, we exploit these concepts to synthesize a wide variety of expressions using a reduced representation, suitable for networked and lightweight applications. © 2003, Institute of electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. Fuzzy relations as representational tools and fuzzy compositional operators as reasoning components, are user in this paper in order to represent knowledge expressed in semantic rules. Furthermore, neural representation and resolution of composite fuzzy relation equations provides knowledge refinement and adaptation to a specific context. A two-layer fuzzy compositional neural network is proposed in this work, with a learning algorithm changing the weights and minimize the error of the small context changes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

This paper introduces a post-filtering algorithm that reduces the blocking artifacts caused by quantizing to zero the high frequency DCT coefficients. First, the algorithm detects the blocks that only have a DC coefficient. Second, the blocking artifacts are reduced by averaging the DC coefficient of the block in question and the DC coefficients of the neighboring four 8/spl times/8 DCT blocks. These blocking artifacts are further reduced by predicting the low-frequency AC coefficients from the DC coefficient within a 3/spl times/3 array of blocks. Experimental results show that averaging the DC coefficients and predicting the low frequency AC coefficients definitely help to remove blocking artifacts in smooth background areas of the image.
