A generalized directional Laplacian distribution: Estimation, mixture models and audio source separation

Directional or Circular statistics are pertaining to the analysis and interpretation of directions or rotations. In this work, a novel probability distribution is proposed to model multidimensional sparse directional data. The Generalized Directional Laplacian Distribution (DLD) is a hybrid between the Laplacian distribution and the von Mises-Fisher distribution. The distribution's parameters are estimated using Maximum-Likelihood Estimation over a set of training data points. Mixtures of Directional Laplacian Distributions (MDLD) are also introduced in order to model multiple concentrations of sparse directional data. In this paper, we present a compressive sensing-based image denoising algorithm using spatially adaptive image representation and estimation of optimal error tolerance based on sparse signal analysis. The proposed method performs block-based multiple compressive sampling after decomposing the sparse signal into feature and non-feature regions using simple statistical analysis. For minimization of recovery error and number of iterations, the modified OMP method estimates the optimal error tolerance using the average variance in the recovery step. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed denoising algorithm better removes noise without undesired artifacts than existing state-of-the-art methods in terms of both objective (PSNR/SSIM) and subjective measures. processing time of the proposed method is 5 to 10 times faster than the standard OMP-based method.

This paper presents a novel real-time super-resolution (SR) method using directionally adaptive image interpolation and image restoration. The proposed interpolation method estimates the edge orientation using steerable filters and performs edge refinement along the estimated edge orientation. Bi-linear and bi-cubic interpolation filters are then selectively used according to the estimated edge orientation for reducing jagging artifacts in slanting edge regions. The proposed restoration method can effectively remove image degradation caused by interpolation using the directionally adaptive truncated constrained least-squares (TCLS) filter. The proposed method provides high-quality magnified images which are similar to or better than the result of advanced interpolation or SR methods without high computational load. Experimental results indicate that the proposed system gives higher peak-to-peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM) values than the state-of-the-art image interpolation methods.

We present an antialiasing method using combined wavelet-Fourier transform and spatially adaptive shrinkage of the transform coefficients. Traditional antialiasing methods employ a simple low-pass filter onto the entire image, so the resulting image loses not only aliasing artifacts but also high-frequency components such as edges and ridges. The proposed algorithm analyzes the property of the LL subband of the discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and reduces aliasing artifacts using patch-adaptive shrinkage of the DWT coefficients. More specifically, an antialiased LL subband is obtained using adaptive patch-based aliasing reduction. To detect an aliased region, we subtract the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) coefficients of the LL subband from the DFT coefficients of antialiased LL subband. The detected aliasing artifacts in the LH, HL, and HH subbands are reduced by patch-wise adaptive shrinkage of the transform coefficients. The resulting antialiased image is obtained using the inverse DWT. The aliasing artifacts can be efficiently reduced by adaptively shrinking wavelet transform coefficients for preserving high-frequency image details. The proposed antialiasing algorithm is suitable for removing aliasing artifacts which frequently occur in imaging sensors with limited resolution.

The main challenge for provisioning of Mobile TV services is to overcome long burst errors as are often found in mobile reception conditions. Long time interleaving can be implemented by means of Application Layer FEC (AL-FEC) to increase the time diversity of the signal and thereby its robustness against burst errors. The main obstacle of long time interleaving for streaming services is the increase in service tune-in time, which significantly decreases the Quality of Experience (QoE) of end users. That is why today's Mobile TV systems are provisioned in a way to minimize the time interleaving length to provide an acceptable tune-in time, though the service robustness would significantly benefit from a longer interleaving length. This paper presents a new way of service provisioning that marries fast zapping and long time interleaving by combining Layer-Aware FEC and layered media codecs with unequal time interleaving and an appropriate transmission scheduling. The effect of the proposed scheme on the QoE as well as the service tune-in time is analyzed. Simulation results within a Gilbert-Elliot channel report the benefit of the proposed scheme, which for the first time enables broadcast services with fast tune-in and at the same time long time interleaving.

A multiple color-filter aperture (MCA) camera can provide depth information as well as color and intensity in the single-camera framework, where the MCA generates misalignment between color channels depending on the distance of a region-of-interest. In this paper, we present a single camera-based estimation of the full depth map using the color shifting property of the MCA. For estimating the color shifting vectors (CSVs) among red, green, and blue color channels, edges are extracted at each color channel. At the edge, we estimate CSVs using normalized cross correlation combined with color shifting mask map. A full depth map is then generated by depth interpolation using the matting Laplacian method from sparsely estimated CSVs at an edge location. Experimental results show that the proposed method can not only estimate the full depth map but also correct the misaligned color image to generate photorealistic color images using a single camera equipped with MCA.

In order to successfully locate and retrieve document images such as technical articles and newspapers, a text localization technique must be employed. The proposed method detects and extracts homogeneous text areas in document images indifferent to font types and size by using connected components analysis to detect blocks of foreground objects. Next, a descriptor that consists of a set of structural features is extracted from the merged blocks and used as input to a trained Support Vector Machines (SVM). Finally, the output of the SVM classifies the block as text or not.

A new method is proposed for initializing Kohonen's self-organizing feature maps (SOFM) of fixed zero neighborhood radius for use in color quantization. The method employs the two largest principal components of the input image so that the initial weights of a number of neurons approach the input image color distribution. The rest of the neurons are initialized using the smallest principal component of the input image. Namely, standard SOFM is applied to the projection of the input image pixels onto the plane spanned by the two largest principal components and to pixels of the original image defined by the smallest principal component. The neuron values which emerge initialize the final SOFM of fixed zero neighborhood radius that performs the color quantization of the original image. Experimental results show that the proposed method can often produce smaller quantization errors than standard SOFM and other color quantization methods.

This paper presents a text localization approach for binarized printed document images. Emphasis is given to the feature extraction and feature selection stages. In the former, several document structure elements and spatial features, likely to convey useful information, are extracted. In the latter, evolutionary multi-objective feature selection is employed to identify combinations of features with simultaneous good performance in terms of text localization sensitivity and specificity. The selected features are applied to a range of classifiers. Performance results over document image sets from known databases are presented, employing the classifiers with or without feature selection. The results suggest that the hybrid techniques, which utilize the classifiers in combination with the customized pre-processing, feature extraction and feature selection stages, exhibit promising performance on a range of document images.

Most of the existing document-binarization techniques deal with many parameters that require a priori setting of their values. Due to the unknown of the ground-truth images, the evaluation of document binarization techniques is subjective and employs human observers for the estimation of the appropriate parameter values. The selection of the appropriate values for these parameters is crucial and influences to the final binarization. However, there is no predetermined set of parameters that guarantees optimal binarization for all document images. This paper proposes a new technique that allows the estimation of proper parameters values for each one of the document binarization techniques. The proposed approach is based on a statistical performance analysis of a set of binarization results, which are obtained by applying various binarization techniques with different parameter values. The proposed statistical performance analysis can also depicts the best document binarization result obtained by a set of document binarization techniques.
