We present a method for tracking deformable surfaces in 3D using a stereo rig. Different from traditional recursive tracking approaches that provide a strong prior on the pose for each new frame, the proposed method tracks deformable surfaces by detecting them in individual frames. In our method, the model of the surface is represented by a triangulated mesh. The constraints for model to image keypoint correspondences, together with the constraints that preserve the lengths of mesh edges, are formulated as second order cone programming (SOCP) constraints, leading this tracking-by-detection method to be an SOCP problem that can be effectively solved. Experiments on a piece of deformed paper demonstrate the capability of the proposed tracking-by-detection method.

This paper deals with motion estimation from image corner correspondences for two cases: the orthogonal corner and the general corner with known space angles. The contribution of the paper is threefold. First, the three dimensional structure of a corner is recovered easily from its image by introducing a new coordinate system. Second, it is shown that the correspondence of one corner and two points over two views is sufficient to determine the motion uniquely, i.e., the rotation and translation. Third, experiments conducted using both simulated data and real images present good results.

Theories in fragmentation have proved that the statistics of image gradient magnitude followed a Weibull distribution, with β (scale) and γ (shape) as free parameters, which are demonstrated to be strongly correlated with brain response. In this paper, we chose β extracted from the proposed strongest component map (SCM) in scale space, as the reduced reference (RR) feature, and developed a novel method for reduced reference image quality assessment (RRIQA) named βW-SCM. For each scale, the SCM was constructed by assembling coefficients with maximum amplitude among different orientations into a single map. The Weibull parameters were then estimated from the SCM. The final image quality was computed by summing the geometric mean of the defined absolute and relative deviations of β. Performance evaluation on the well-known LIVE database demonstrated an outstanding advantage of low RR feature data rate with nearly the same prediction accuracy and consistency.

In this work, a novel salient object detection method is proposed based on the saliency driven clustering. To capture visual patterns of an image, the color contrast prior and boundary prior are utilized to generate the image clusters automatically. Then, a simple operation like regional saliency computation is applied to refine the saliency maps generated by two priors. The final saliency map are obtained by combining the refined contrast prior saliency and boundary prior saliency. Extensive experiments show that our proposed model achieves better performance on salient region detection against the state-of-the-art methods.

This paper investigates sensor fault problems in time-delay systems with uncertain disturbances. Using the measurement equation, the sensor fault can be translated into the state inputs. Subsequently, a cluster of residual generators is designed by employing the space geometric method. The corresponding filter parameters are obtained based on the space geometric approach, then using H ∞ optimization technique reduce the effects of disturbance inputs on the residuals, at the same time, the residual generator is designed so that the residual signals and sensor faults satisfy one to one correspondence, which can be used to detect and isolate the sensor faults in time-delay systems with disturbance. Simulation results suggest the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed approach.

A computational saliency model utilizing bio-inspired features for spatiotemporal saliency is presented in this paper. We first propose distributed opponent oriented energy for compact local dynamic texture description motivated by Human Vision System. Then, we integrate the derived motion characterization and a revised self-resemblance saliency framework. High effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method is extensively demonstrated both qualitatively and quantitatively, for background subtraction in the cases of extremely dynamic scenes and camera jitter. In terms of the trade-off between accuracy and computation cost, our method achieves competitive results in contrast to the state-of-art algorithm.

Person re-identification (RE-ID) aims at associating the same pedestrian over non-overlapping surveillance scenes. A large number of approaches have emerged in recent years, and they mainly focus on designing middle or high level features to highlight the most discriminative aspects of pedestrians. Due to the nonrigid structure of pedestrians, it is difficult to reidentify pedestrians by low-level features. We investigate the results of conventional person RE-ID approaches, and find that the inadequate utilization of low-level features lead to the poor performance. In this work, we propose a novel framework to utilize the low-level visual features in a more effective way. Given a result obtained from the conventional person RE-ID method, the framework returns a more reasonable result. The framework is extended from the manifold ranking method, and several adjustments are made taking the requirements of person RE-ID into consideration. Our framework is validated through experiments on two person RE-ID datasets (VIPeR and ETHZ), and results from four different conventional approaches show significant improvement.
