In this paper, we propose a scatter-glare correction method based on thickness estimation and digital filtration. The method is an improvement of the scatter-glare correction method proposed by Ersahin, et al The method estimates scatter glare fraction in two steps. The first step is to assign an equivalent Lucite thickness to every pixel in the image, and the second step is to estimate the scatter-glare fraction from the thickness information. Experiments show that this method can well estimate the scatter-glare fraction in a wide range of thicknesses, and a higher accuracy for scatter-glare estimation can be obtained by this method compared with Ersahin's method.

A novel evolutionary algorithm called probability evolutionary algorithm (PEA), and a method based on PEA for visual tracking of human body using voxel data are presented. PEA is inspired by the quantum computation and the quantum-inspired evolutionary algorithm, and it has a good balance between exploration and exploitation with very fast computation speed. The individual in PEA is encoded by the probabilistic compound bit, defined as the smallest unit of information, for the probabilistic representation. The observation step is used in PEA to obtain the observed states of the individual, and the update operator is used to evolve the individual. In the PEA based human tracking framework, tracking is considered to be a function optimization problem, so the aim is to optimize the matching function between the model and the image observation. Since the matching function is a very complex function in high-dimensional space, PEA is used to optimize it. Experiments on 3D human motion tracking using voxel data demonstrate the effectiveness, significance and computation efficiency of the proposed human tracking method.

An approach for head pose estimation has been proposed in this paper using Hough forest. The estimation of pose are generated by voting from image patches as in a Hough transform. The basic idea is that image patches which contain eyes, hair or neck can give rich information about the head position and orientation. The voting process is implemented by randomized forest which is an efficient and robust tool for classification and regression. The method is quantitatively evaluated by comparing the estimated pose to the ground truth.

Discusses mosaicking and warping for forward-motion (or forward-moving) images (FMI). In FMI, the field of view of one frame is wider than that of a later one; however, the resolution of the later frame is higher than that of previous one. Warp-function algorithms based respectively on a mesh warp and a triangle grid are presented, and a multi-resolution mosaic based on the wavelet transform is given. In-between images could be warped from the single mosaic image. An experiment with a real scene shows that the mesh warp algorithm is more time-consuming than that of triangle grid, but the image quality of the latter is better than that of the former. It also shows that the multi-resolution mosaic image is smooth and natural, eliminating the impact of the seams.

A system aiming at detecting driver drowsiness or fatigue on the basis of video analysis is presented. The focus of this paper is on how to extract driver yawning. A real time face detector is implemented to locate driver's face region. Subsequently, Kalman filter is adapted to track face region. Further, mouth window is localized within face region and degree of mouth openness is extracted based on mouth features to determine driver yawning in video. The system will reinitialize when occlusion or miss-detect on happen. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the validity of the described method.

Under the analysis of classical decoupling methods, a new kind of decoupling method is proposed based on kernel methods. We consider the application of support vector regression and kernel ridge regression in multivariable decoupling design. Simulation results are presented to show the multivariable control system adopting the kernel method compensator can decouple the coupling effects among those parameters. A comparison of support vector regression and kernel ridge regression in decoupling performance is also discussed. The method is relatively simple and is easy to implement All these characteristics make the decoupled control system easy to use in a practical environment.

Although scene classification has been studied for decades, indoor scene recognition remains challenging due to its large view point variance and massive irregular artefacts. In fact, most existing methods for outdoor scene classification perform poorly in the indoor situation. To address the problem, we propose a hybrid image representation by combining the global information with the local structure of the scene. First, the global discriminative information is captured by pyramid GIST feature. Second, the local structure is encoded by the bag of features method with Histogram Intersection Kernel (HIK). Finally, HIK based SVM is employed for learning and classification. Experiments on the MIT indoor scene database show that our approach could significantly improve the recognition accuracy of the state-of-art methods by about 14%.

In this paper, we present a new method for the detection of principal curves in complicated feature images. Based on the criteria of the shortest path of curves and directional deviation of paths, principal curve detection is carried out in graph domain. DFS searching scheme is adopted in exploration of a graph network. The motivation of this research is to find road boundaries and house contours from printed map images. By extensive experiments, the algorithm has shown good efficiency and robustness with real map images. The technique described in this paper can also be used in other applications, such as in character recognition, to separate characters from other unwanted document components that overlap with the characters.
