Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is an important tool in digital signal processing. We have proposed an approach to performing DFT via linear sums of discrete moments. In this paper, based on the previous work, we present a new method of performing fast Fourier transform without multiplications by performing appropriate bit operations and shift operations in binary system, which can be implemented by integer additions of fixed points. The systolic implementation is a demonstration of the locality of dataflow in the algorithms and hence it implies an easy and potential hardware/VLSI realization. The approach is also applicable to DFT inverses.

In this paper, an incremental algorithm which is derived from Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is proposed for background modeling in surveillance type of video sequences. The adopted algorithm, which is called as Incremental NMF (INMF), is capable of modeling dynamic content of the surveillance video and controlling contribution of the subsequent observations to the existing representation properly. INMF preserves additive, parts-based representation, and dimension reduction capability of NMF without increasing the computational load. Test results are reported to compare background modeling performances of batch-mode and incremental NMF in surveillance type of video. Moreover, test results obtained by the incremental PCA are also given for comparison purposes. It is shown that INMF outperforms the conventional batch-mode NMF in all aspects of dynamic background modeling. Although object tracking performance of INMF and the incremental PCA are comparable, INMF is much more robust to illumination changes.

This paper addresses the problem of human activity recognition in still images. We propose a novel method that focuses on human-object interaction for feature representation of activities on Riemannian manifolds, and exploits underlying Riemannian geometry for classification. The main contributions of the paper include: (a) represent human activity by appearance features from local patches centered at hands containing interacting objects, and by structural features formed from the detected human skeleton containing the head, torso axis and hands;(b) formulate SVM kernel function based on geodesics on Riemannian manifolds under the log-Euclidean metric;(c) apply multi-class SVM classifier on the manifold under the one-against-all strategy. Experiments were conducted on a dataset containing 17196 images in 12 classes of activities from 4 subjects. Test results, evaluations, and comparisons with state-of-the-art methods provide support to the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Downward looking scene matching is an important technique of the aircraft automation guidance. To solve the heterogeneous images scene matching problem, we present two effective methods based on intensity-based correlation in this paper. One is to search the real match position based on the feature of the peak on the correlation surface. We propose a criterion to search the proper matching. The other is to use a non-linear filter to pre-process the images, which reduces the influence of ambient lighting while keeping the necessary image details since the contour of the scene is the stable and unchanged feature. Also, we use a Fourier analysis to explain the contribution of different frequency spectrum in the correlation. By using this frequency information, we propose a simpler kernel filter method based on pre-process, which has the similar performance with non-linear filter pre-process but has less computation complexity. This simple kernel is more suitable for the embedded DSP real-time application.
