We propose a novel image prior for the non-parametric Bayesian mixture model based unsupervised classification of SAR images. We modified the Normalized Gamma Process prior that constitutes a more general form of the Dirichlet Process prior in order to enclose the contribution of the adjacent pixels into the classification scheme. This yields an image classification prior embedded in a mixture model that allows infinite number of clusters and enables reaching to smoothed classification maps. Based on the classification results obtained on synthetic and real TerraSAR-X images, it is shown that the proposed model is capable of accurately classifying the pixels. It applies a simple iterative update scheme at a single run without performing a hierarchical clustering strategy as used in the previously proposed methods. It is also demonstrated that the model order estimation accuracy of the proposed method outperforms the conventional finite mixture models.

As a multi-thresholding technique for gray images, the maximum likelihood method under the assumption of mixture of normal distributions and the thresholding method considering the quantization error have already been proposed. In this report, separability measures are defined from the likelihood criteria which are used as evaluation functions in these methods. The proposed separability measures are invariant under affine transformations of gray level scale and are normalized to be within values from 0 to 1. Binarization for a gray image whose distribution is uniform is considered. By investigating properties of the separability measures in this case, it is shown that consideration of the quantization error is effective and the defined separability measures are valid.

This paper introduces a new class of switching vector median filter. The proposed algorithm first uses four directional masks to analyze the color difference between the central pixel and its neighborhood pixels in the RGB color space and classify each color pixel into noisy pixel or noise-free one, and then employs the standard vector median filtering operations in the detected noisy locations to restore the corrupted pixels and leave the noise-free ones unchanged. The simulation results show that the proposed method excellently suppresses impulsive noise as well as preserving the image details well, and significantly outperforms the existing vector filtering solutions in terms of both the objective measures and the perceptual visual quality.
