This paper proposes a drawing tool recognition method based on features calculated from the shape of stroke endings. The application for this method is to help art historians to identify the drawing tool used for a drawing. Since the style of a drawing depends on the drawing tool used, drawing tool recognition is an important step toward a style analysis. A dominant feature of a drawn stroke is its ending. Several features regarding curvature, proportions etc. are calculated out of the shape of the endings. These features are then used to classify stroke endings with a SVM classifier. © 2008 IEEE.

We propose a straightforward skin detection method for online videos. To overcome varying illumination circumstances and a variety of skin colors, we introduce a multiple model approach which can be carried out independently per model. The color models are initiated by skin detection based on face detection and adapted in real time. Our approach outperforms static approaches both in precision and runtime. If we detect a face in a scene, the number of false positives can be diminished significantly. Evaluation is carried out on publicly available on-line videos showing that adaptive multiple model outperforms static methods in classification precision and suppression of false positives. In order to preserve our cultural heritage and for automated document processing libraries and national archives have started digitizing historical documents. In the case of degraded manuscripts (e.g. by mold, humidity, bad storage conditions) the text or parts of it can disappear. The remaining parts of the text can be segmented and the ruling can be extrapolated with the a priori knowledge. Since the ruling defines the position of the text within a page, it can be used for layout analysis and as a basis for the enhancement of the readability. Furthermore, information about the scribe (hand) of the manuscript, its spatiotemporal origin can be gained by analyzing the ruling. This paper presents an algorithm for ruling estimation of Glagolitic texts based on text line extraction and is suitable for degraded manuscripts by extrapolating the baselines with the a priori knowledge of the ruling. The algorithm was tested on 30 pages of the Missale Sinaiticum and the evaluation was based on visual criteria. © 2008 IEEE.

Two medieval manuscripts are recorded, investigated and analyzed by philologists in collaboration with computer scientists. Due to mold, air humidity and water the parchment is partially damaged and consequently hard to read. In order to enhance the readability of the text, the manuscript pages are imaged in different spectral bands ranging from 360 to 1000nm. A registration process is necessary for further image processing methods which combine the information gained by the different spectral bands. Therefore, the images are coarsely aligned using rotationally invariant features and an affine transformation. Afterwards, the similarity of the different images is computed by means of the normalized cross correlation. Finally, the images are accurately mapped to each other by the local weighted mean transformation. The algorithms used for the registration and results in enhancing the texts using Multivariate Spatial Correlation are presented in this paper. copyright by EURASIP.

This paper gives a survey about numismatic research fields where computer vision methods have the potential to improve the effectiveness and impact of research work. In total, five different parts of numismatic research areas are identified: The classification of coins into given types, the identification of concrete coin specimens, the identification of coins struck by the same die, the reassembling of broken coin fragments and the segmentation and surveying of coins. For each application a problem description is given and the use of computer vision methods is discussed in detail. Additionally, for the image-based classification, identification and segmentation of coins results achieved so far are presented. Since computer vision methods are applied on photographs of coins, their acquisition (both in 2D and 3D) is covered as well. ©The Eurographics Association 2008.

Digitizing large-surface paintings at a high resolution in museums is necessary in the field of painting conservation to document the actual condition of paintings (e.g. colour measurements) and for analysis (e.g. to analyse underdrawings in high-resolution infrared images). Hence, this paper presents a portable system that is able to scan large-surface paintings or images to provide high-resolution digital images. Additional a 3D-model of the surface of the scanned object is generated. The purpose of the 3D-model is to use the 3D-information to create a planar representation of a once planar painting or image that was deformed through environmental effects. Otherwise uncorrected images lead to blurring in the overlap region of the blended subimages. The resolution of the final image is up to 33 pixel/mm and the size of the scanned object is up to 1.5 m x 1.3 m.

Most optical character recognition (OCR) systems need to be trained and tested on the symbols that are to be recognized. Therefore, ground truth data is needed. This data consists of character images together with their ASCII code. Among the approaches for generating ground truth of real world data, one promising technique is to use electronic version of the scanned documents. Using an alignment method, the character bounding boxes extracted from the electronic document are matched to the scanned image. Current alignment methods are not robust to different similarity transforms. They also need calibration to deal with non-linear local distortions introduced by the printing/scanning process. In this paper we present a significant improvement over existing methods, allowing to skip the calibration step and having a more accurate alignment, under all similarity transforms. Our method finds a robust and pixel accurate scanner independent alignment of the scanned image with the electronic document, allowing the extraction of accurate ground truth character information. The accuracy of the alignment is demonstrated using documents from the UW3 dataset. The results show that the mean distance between the estimated and the ground truth character bounding box position is less than one pixel.

A key limitation of current layout analysis methods is that they rely on many hard-coded assumptions about document layouts and can not adapt to new layouts for which the underlying assumptions are not satisfied. Another major drawback of these approaches is that they do not return confidence scores for their outputs. These problems pose major challenges in large scale digitization efforts where a large number of different layouts need to be handled and manual inspection of the results on each individual page is not feasible. This paper presents a novel statistical approach to layout analysis that aims at solving the above mentioned problems for Manhattan layouts. The presented approach models known page layouts as a structural mixture model. A probabilistic matching algorithm is presented that gives multiple interpretations of input layout with associated probabilities. First experiments on documents from the publicly available MARG dataset achieved below 5%error rate for geometric layout analysis.
