This paper presents an evaluation of two different 3D scanning devices. They can be put into operation depending on the monetary constraints of the user on one hand, and the accuracy needed for a specific application on the other hand. The setting up of the systems and the process of scanning with the devices are presented. Two setups were formed to evaluate the capabilities of a low costs scanning device together with industrial scanning devices. A comparison of the scans obtained was made by using a Konica Minolta VI-9i industrial scanning solution as a reference. The analysis comprises the estimation of surface flatness, the evaluation of measuring of geometric shapes, and the appraisal of the time required for obtaining a virtual 3D representation of a scanned object. The results show that both the curves as well as the shapes as a whole have been captured accurately.

Geometric layout analysis plays an important role in document image understanding. Many algorithms known in literature work well on standard document images, achieving high text line segmentation accuracy on the UW-III dataset. These algorithms rely on certain assumptions about document layouts, and fail when their underlying assumptions are not met. Also, they do not provide confidence scores for their output. These two problems limit the usefulness of general purpose layout analysis methods in large scale applications. In this contribution, we propose a statistically motivated model-based trainable layout analysis system that allows assumption-free adaptation to different layout types and produces likelihood estimates of the correctness of the computed page segmentation. The performance of our approach is tested on a subset of the Google 1000 books dataset where it achieved a text line segmentation accuracy of 98.4% on layouts where other general-purpose algorithms failed to do a correct segmentation.

In order to preserve our cultural heritage and for automated document processing libraries and national archives have started digitizing historical documents. In the case of degraded manuscripts (e.g. by mold, humidity, bad storage conditions) the text or parts of it can disappear. The remaining parts of the text can be segmented and the ruling can be extrapolated with the a priori knowledge. Since the ruling defines the position of the text within a page, it can be used for layout analysis and as a basis for the enhancement of the readability. Furthermore, information about the scribe (hand) of the manuscript, its spatiotemporal origin can be gained by analyzing the ruling. This paper presents an algorithm for ruling estimation of Glagolitic texts based on text line extraction and is suitable for degraded manuscripts by extrapolating the baselines with the a priori knowledge of the ruling. The algorithm was tested on 30 pages of the Missale Sinaiticum and the evaluation was based on visual criteria.

This paper deals with the enhancement of the readability in historic texts written on parchment. Due to mold, air, humidity, water, etc. parchment and text are partially damaged and consequently hard to read. In order to enhance the readability of the text, the manuscript pages are imaged in different spectral bands ranging from 360 to 1000 nm. The readability enhancement is based on a spectral and spatial analysis of the multivariate image data by multivariate spatial correlation. The main advantage of the method is that especially the text regions are enhanced which is provided by generating a mask image. This mask is based on the automatic reconstruction of the ruling scheme of the text pages. The method is tested on two medieval Slavonic manuscripts written on parchment.

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are today the most destabilizing factor in the global internet and there is a strong need for sophisticated solutions. We introduce a formal statistical framework and derive a Bayes optimal packet classifier from it. Our proposed practical algorithm "adaptive history-based IP filtering" (AHIF) mitigates DDoS attacks near the victim and outperforms existing methods by at least 32% in terms of collateral damage. Furthermore, it adjusts to the strength of an ongoing attack and ensures availability of the attacked server. In contrast to other adaptive solutions, firewall rulesets used to resist an attack can be precalculated before an attack takes place. This ensures an immediate response in a DDoS emergency. For evaluation, simulated DDoS attacks and two real-world user traffic datasets are used.

In this work, multi-view ear recognition problems are examined in detail. A new multi-view ear recognition approach based on B-Spline pose manifold construction in discriminative projection space which is formed by null kernel discriminant analysis (NKDA) feature extraction is presented. Many experiments and comparisons are provided to show the effectiveness of our multi-view ear recognition approach.

Past decades, numerous spectral analysis based algorithms have been proposed for dimensionality reduction, which plays an important role in machine learning and artificial intelligence. However, most of these existing algorithms are developed intuitively and pragmatically, i.e., on the base of the experience and knowledge of experts for their own purposes. Therefore, it will be more informative to provide some a systematic framework for understanding the common properties and intrinsic differences in the algorithms. In this paper, we propose such a framework, i.e., ldquopatch alignmentrdquo, which consists of two stages: part optimization and whole alignment. With the proposed framework, various algorithms including the conventional linear algorithms and the manifold learning algorithms are reformulated into a unified form, which gives us some new understandings on these algorithms.

A new signal type classifier for fading environments

Automatic classification of digital signal types is extremely important in communication intelligence. In this paper, we present a highly efficient digital signal type classifier for fading environments. In the proposed method, an equalizer is used to reduce the channel effects. Selected combination of the fourth, the sixth and the eighth order of moments and cumulants of the received signal are introduced as the features for representation of digital signal. A novel multiclass classifier based on support vector machines determines types of the received signals. Simulation results show that the proposed method has a high success rate for recognition of different digital signal types, even at low signal to noise ratio (SNR).
