Example-based face sketch synthesis technology generally requires face photo-sketch images with face alignment and size normalize. To break through the limitation, we propose a global face sketch synthesis method: In training, all training photo-sketch patch pairs are collected together and a photo feature dictionary is learned from the photo patches. For each atom of the dictionary, its K closest photo-sketch patch pairs are clustered, namely "Anchored Neighborhood". In testing, for each test photo patch, we search its nearest photo patch in the Anchored Neighborhood determined by its closest atom, then the corresponding sketch patch is the output. By the same way, we train and test in the high-frequency domain and synthesis the high-frequency results. Finally, the fusion of the initial and the high-frequency results is the final sketch. The experiments on three public face sketch datasets and various real-world photos demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

In this paper, a novel methodology is presented to settle the region of interest (ROI) detection problem in vehicle color recognition so as to remove the redundant components of vehicles that interfere greatly with color recognition. In order to make full use of the local color and spatial information, vehicle images are divided into different superpixels at first. The spatial relationship between superpixels and the outermost pixels is then used for the background removal of vehicle images. By comparing with the vehicle window clustering centroids obtained by k-means, the superpixels close to the universal color characteristics of windows are removed so that the dominant color superpixels are determined. Finally, a linear Support Vector Machine classifier is trained for color recognition. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed methodology is effective for color region of interest detection and thus contribute to vehicle color recognition.

Utilizing parallel algorithms is an established way of increasing performance in systems that are bound to real-time restrictions. sensor-based sorting is a machine vision application for which firm real-time requirements need to be respected in order to reliably remove potentially harmful entities from a material feed. Recently, employing a predictive tracking approach using multitarget tracking in order to decrease the error in the physical separation in optical sorting has been proposed. For implementations that use hard associations between measurements and tracks, a linear assignment problem has to be solved for each frame recorded by a camera. The auction algorithm can be utilized for this purpose, which also has the advantage of being well suited for parallel architectures. In this paper, an improved implementation of this algorithm for a graphics processing unit (GPU) is presented. The resulting algorithm is implemented in both an OpenCL and a CUDA based environment. By using an optimized data structure, the presented algorithm outperforms recently proposed implementations in terms of speed while retaining the quality of output of the algorithm. Furthermore, memory requirements are significantly decreased, which is important for embedded systems. Experimental results are provided for two different GPUs and six datasets. It is shown that the proposed approach is of particular interest for applications dealing with comparatively large problem sizes.

Industrial optical belt sorters are highly versatile in sorting bulk material or food, especially if mechanical properties are not sufficient for an adequate sorting quality. In previous works, we could show that the sorting quality can be enhanced by replacing the line scan camera, which is normally used, with an area scan camera. By performing multitarget tracking within the field of view, the precision of the utilized separation mechanism can be enhanced. The employed kinematics-based multitarget tracking crucially depends on the ability to associate detection hypotheses of the same particle across multiple frames. In this work, we propose a procedure to incorporate the visual similarity of the detected particles into the kinematics-based multitarget tracking that is generic and evaluates the visual similarity independent of the kinematics. For evaluating the visual similarity, we use the Kernelized Correlation Filter, the Large Margin Nearest Neighbor method and the Normalized Cross Correlation. Although no dear superiority for any of the visual similarity measures mentioned above could be determined, an improvement of all considered error metrics was attained.

Compared with the previous standards, the coding efficiency and complexity of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) have been greatly improved. Parallel encoding scheme based on CTU rows like wavefront parallel processing (WPP) and inter-frame wavefront (IFW) can efficiently reduce the encoding time of HEVC. However, due to the coding complexity of CTU within various rows may be quite different, WPP and IFW have the problem of unbalanced load among threads for parallel encoding tasks. To address this issue, in this paper, factors affecting coding efficiency are found by analyzing the data dependence and load relationship of intra- and inter-frame CTUs, and we propose a fine granular parallel strategy accordingly. In the meanwhile, refine the parallel granularity while maintaining the accuracy of symbol prediction requires additional context information in CABAC encoding, which leads to higher bit rate, and will reduce the efficiency of CABAC encoding. In order to decrease the bit rate without affecting the quality, we also making some modifications for the CABAC encoding. The proposed method is implemented on the Tilera-GX36 multicore platform. Experiment results show that our algorithm achieves up to 1.6 and 2.8 times speedup improvement compared with IFW and WPP respectively.

Feature Encoder Guided Generative Adversarial Network for Face Photo-Sketch Synthesis

Face photo-sketch synthesis often suffers from many problems, such as low clarity, facial distortion, contents loss, texture missing and color inconsistency in the synthesized images. To alleviate these problems, we propose a feature Encoder Guided Generative Adversarial Network (EGGAN) for face photo-sketch synthesis. We adopt the cycle-consistent generative adversarial network with skipped connections as the general framework, which can train the models for both sketch synthesis and photo synthesis simultaneously. The two generators can constrain each other. In addition, a feature auto-encoder is introduced to refine the synthetic results. The feature encoder is trained to explore a latent space between the photo domain and sketch domains, assuming that there exists a uniform feature representation for a photo-sketch pair. Instead of participating in the generation process, the feature encoder is only utilized to guide the training process. Meanwhile, the feature loss and the feature consistency loss between the fake images and real images from the latent space are calculated to prevent the important identity-specific information from missing and reduce the artifacts in the synthesized images. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on public databases both in terms of perceptual quality and quantitative assessments.

Extended Global-Local Representation Learning for Video Person Re-Identification

Recently, person re-identification has become one of the research hotspots in the field of computer vision and has received extensive attention in the academic community. Inspired by the part-based research of image ReID, this paper presents a novel feature learning and extraction framework for video-based person re-identification, namely, the extended global-local representation learning network (EGLRN). Given a video sequence of a pedestrian, the holistic and local features are simultaneously extracted using the E-GLRN network. Specifically, for the global feature learning, we adopt the channel attention convolutional neural network (CNN) and the bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) networks, which are responsible for introducing a CNN-LSTM module to learn the features of consecutive frames. The local feature learning module relies on the key local information extraction, which is based on the Bi-LSTM networks. In order to obtain the local feature more effectively, our work defines a concept of "the main image group'' by selecting three representative frames. The local feature representation of a video is obtained by exploiting the spatial contextual and appearance information of this group. The local and global features extracted in this paper are complementary and further combined into a discriminative and robust feature representation of the video sequence. Extensive experiments are conducted on three video-based ReID datasets, including the iLIDS-VID, PRID2011 and MARS datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art video-based re-identification approaches.

Target tracking is currently a hot research topic in Computer Vision and has a wide range of use in many research fields. However, due to factors such as occlusion, fast motion, blur and scale variation, tracking method still needs to be deeply studied. In this paper, we propose a block target tracking method based on multi-convolutional layer features and Kernel correlation filter. Our method divides the tracking process into two parts: target position estimation and target scale estimation. First, we block the target frame based on the condition number. Second, we extract the features by the convolutional layer and apply it to the kernel correlation filter to get the center position of different block targets. With the reliability of different blocks measured by the Barker coefficient, the overall target position center is obtained. Then, the affine transformation is adopted to achieve the scale adaptation. The algorithm in this paper is evaluated by the public video sequences in OTB-2013. Numerous experimental results demonstrate that the proposed tracking method can achieve target scale adaptation and effectively improve the tracking accuracy.

Joint DBF and SAO Parallel Filtering Based on Multithread Load Balancing

This paper presents a joint parallel loop filtering algorithm based on multi-thread load balancing in HEVC decoding, which implements the parallel processing of deblocking filtering (DBF) and sample adaptive compensation (SAO). Because of the diversity of video, the texture of different regions in an image is also different, which leads to various CTU partition methods. Therefore, the number of the boundary to be filtered is greatly different, resulting the computation load among multiple threads unbalanced in parallel processing. To solve this problem, an area division scheme is proposed, which divides the image into multiple areas, and the number of boundaries to be filtered in each area is similar. Then, the mapping relationship table is used to allocate these areas to multiple threads for parallel processing, so as to achieve the load balancing among the filtering threads. Finally, the cache technology is used to combine DBF and SAO to reduce the delay between them and improve the overall parallelism of the loop filter. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed load balancing joint filtering algorithm is 8.15% higher than the previous scheme.
