A general theory for the morphological representation of discrete and binary images is presented. The theory relies on the generation of a set of nonoverlapping segments of an image by repeated erosions and set transformations, which in turn produces a decomposition that guarantees exact reconstruction. The morphological image-representation transform and its properties are examined, with focus on the relationship between the transform and some existing shape-analysis tools, thus introducing the transform as the basis of a unified geometrical image analysis. Particular cases of the general representation scheme are shown to yield a number of useful image representations which are directly related to various forms of digital morphological skeletons. Also considered is the relationship between the transform and the various forms of morphological skeletons.< >

In this paper we investigate the computational performance of a number of morphological skeletons. We also develop the reduced-cardinality geometric-step morphological skeleton which is shown to achieve logarithmic computational complexity, compared to the linear computational complexity of the uniform-step morphological skeleton, when implemented on a large neighborhood pipelined morphological processor. Furthermore, an upper bound on the skeleton cardinality is derived. © 1988 SPIE. All rights reserved.

The first random field, the mutually compatible Gibbs random field, is a special nontrivial case of a general Gibbs random field, whereas the second random field, the semi-Markov random field is a non-Markovian generalization of a mutually compatible Gibbs random field.< >

Presents a unified theory for the description of Gibbs images that allows one to answer some very important theoretical and practical questions about their statistical behavior. The author first introduces the local transfer function and derives the Gibbs measure in terms of this function. He restricts the derived probability structure to satisfy the property of mutual compatibility thus resulting in the subclass of mutually compatible Gibbs images. The author reviews their properties and briefly discusses various issues related to their simulation and identification. Simulation results from the area of texture analysis and synthesis are presented, in order to demonstrate various aspects of the theory.< >

The implementation of real-time image encoding requires a high and constant throughput rate not achievable by a SISD machine. With a reasonable size codebook and SIMD machine architecture. Vector Quantization algorithm can be implemented in real-time. But, single stage Vector Quantization requires fairly large-size codebook for good quality image encoding. Multi-Stage Vector Quantization with codebooks of moderate size at each stage has been shown to be an alternative viable approach. The bits per pixel rates for TV quality composite color image encoding using Multi-Stage Vector Quantization are reported. The VQ/MSVQ implementation requires two processors, inner product processor and comparator-address generator. The implementation details of the processors and their throughput rate are described.

Autoregressive(AR) or linear predictive(LP) modeling and Wigner time-frequency representations have been proposed for non-stationary signal analysis and synthesis, owing to their specific advantages over the short-time Fourier transform, viz. reduced data set characterisation and improved frequency resolution of the former, and the improved time resolution and thence better non-stationary signal representation of the latter. However, the former is limited in time resolution and the latter in frequency resolution and size of characterising data set, depending on the size of the windows that need to be used. This paper investigates the potential combination of the two above methods, with the aim of exploiting their advantages simultaneously and addressing the window size-resolution dilemma. The concept shows good promise to this end, despite the problems of the cross-spectral components and computational complexity, that need to be addressed. Examples of simulated signals are presented to illustrate the advantages of this representation.

This Special Issue is composed of the papers selected from the 1978 IEEE computer Society Workshop on Pattern Recognition (PR) and Artificial Intelligence (Al) held in Princeton, NJ, April 12-14, 1978. The Workshop was sponsored by the Technical Committee on Machine Intelligence and Pattern analysis. Inevitably, the contributors to the Workshop determined, to a large degree, the tone and complexion of this Special Issue. For this reason, a brief account of the Workshop Proceedings, though now history, is given. About half of the papers presented at the Workshop were also submitted for the Special Issue, a total of 37. Those of high quality were far more than the number that could be accommodated within the available number of pages. We decided to choose three topics where the interaction between the methodologies of PR and Al was most prevelant: analysis of images, analysis of speech, and certain general algorithms. All the selected papers present either theoretical, or experimental results, or both. We felt that such results clearly demonstrate the progress achieved and can be seen as very impressive if measured against the difficult problem of emulating functions associated with human intelligence by machines. It is true that they often fall short from some of the earlier ambitious goals, but the time is probably ripe to reexamine such goals in view of the accumulated experience. The following is a brief scanning of the contents of this issue, especially as related to the integration and/or interaction of PR and Al methodologies.

This book includes the proceedings of the International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks (ICANN 2006) held on September 10-14, 2006 in Athens, Greece, with tutorials being presented on September 10, the main conference taking place during September 11-13 and accompanying workshops on perception, cognition and interaction held on September 14, 2006. The ICANN conference is organized annually by the European Neural Network Society in cooperation with the International Neural Network Society, the Japanese Neural Network Society and the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. It is the premier European event covering all topics concerned with neural networks and related areas. The ICANN series of conferences was initiated in 1991 and soon became the major European gathering for experts in these fields. In 2006 the ICANN Conference was organized by the Intelligent Systems Laboratory and the image, video and Multimedia Systems Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens in Athens, Greece. From 475 papers submitted to the conference, the International Program Committee selected, following a thorough peer-review process, 208 papers for publication and presentation to 21 regular and 10 special sessions. The quality of the papers received was in general very high; as a consequence, it was not possible to accept and include in the conference program many papers of good quality.
