A New Approach to Determine Feasible Operating Region of Unbalanced Distribution Networks with Distributed Photovoltaics

Amidst rising distributed generation and its potential role in grid management, this article presents a new realistic approach to determine the operational space and flexibility potential of an unbalanced active distribution network. The feasible operating region of an active distribution network is constituted by its range of active-reactive power exchanges with the bulk power system without breaching network constraints. This study explores the potential of highly penetrated single- and three-phase distributed photovoltaics and voltage-sensitive loads to determine the feasible operating region at different operating points. The cumulative response of Volt-Var controlled distributed photovoltaics and voltage-sensitive loads determines the power flow at the bulk power system-active distribution network interconnection, ensuring feasibility with respect to voltage magnitude and unbalance constraints. Further, the correspondence of feasible operating region with the tap-settings of substation transformer enables a novel feature to traverse throughout the available operating region and facilitate bulk power system-active distribution network power coordination. Additionally, a nodal sensitivity-based adjustable Volt-Var control scheme is proposed for distributed photovoltaics, improving the feasible operating region. The proposed strategy is validated on bulk power systemactive distribution network integrated test system. The rise in mobile internet usage especially using cellular networks demands efficient performance for web traffic, primarily made up of short TCP flows. For TCP, Cubic is the most widely deployed congestion control algorithm. mmWave and THz offer very high bandwidth and low latency, enabling faster speeds and reduced delay for companies deploying innovative applications, positioning them as the future of wireless technology. As such, we are compelled to thoroughly evaluate the performance of Cubic in various mmWave specific NLoS/LoS scenarios. In the process, we find Cubic really struggling when it comes to static NLoS scenarios and long connections particularly because Cubic keeps on attempting recovery from slow-start but fails due to the NLoS condition. This is where TCP Cubiwood comes to the rescue with an improvement of 189%in a simulated static NLoS scenario with results comparable to Cubic in wired conditions as well, thus becoming a suitable contender for replacing the historical algorithm. Delayed Congestion Response (DCR) tries to make TCP more robust towards channel errors in wireless networks so we also propose an additional flavor of Cubiwood, called Cubiwood-DCR which increases performance slightly in both wired and wireless high frequency scenarios. We extensively evaluate Cubiwood against Cubic, both with and without DCR enabled and make our code available for reproducibility and further research in the same direction. Moreover, the simplicity of this method makes our proposal a much more attractive solution. We believe the proposed solution is easy to implement, can replace Cubic and has the potential to improve performance in THz communication as well which is one of the competing spectrum bands for 6G networks. © 2025 IEEE.

Software-defined vehicles (SDVs) are an emerging paradigm in the automotive industry where vehicles' functionality, performance, and safety can be enhanced and updated through software, even after production. Unlike traditional vehicles, which rely primarily on physical components, SDVs leverage advanced connectivity, real-time data analytics, and cloud integration to adapt to changing regulations, driver preferences, and environmental conditions. This shift enables vehicles to evolve continuously, responding to new technological advances and customer needs. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end framework to demonstrate and realize the full benefits of SDVs. We incorporate the concept of digital twin (of the vehicle) driven software update authorization to download or update an application on the vehicle. In our framework, attestation refers to the verification of each software update's compatibility and functionality with the vehicle's current ECUs before deployment. Any impending/requested update is first verified for its compatibility with the vehicle's architecture (as per the twin) on the cloud. The idea is via the SDVs' digital twin - since each and every ECU is virtualized - the simulation and testing of the actual hardware setup with the new application software can be done without direct impact on the physical vehicle. Once the application is installed across all relevant virtualized ECUs, the framework confirms compatibility, ensuring smooth deployment and functionality in the real-world vehicle. Post this successful attestation, the installation will be done on the real vehicle corresponding to that digital twin. Through this proposed framework, we intend to ensure the safety of the updation, while the new updates contribute to the functionality and performance improvements. © 2025 IEEE.

In this work, we present milliGait, a user identification using gait patterns captured by millimeter wave (mmWave) radar technology. milliGait takes into account the unique movement signatures of individuals to enable privacy secured accurate user identification. Using a Commercial-Off-the-self (COTS) mmWave radar we have collected mmWave features, particularly the range information and range-doppler profile features, extracted from the raw I/Q samples. To categorize people according to their leg movement patterns, we developed a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model using the mmWave features. The two features namely the range information and the range-doppler profile is fed into two concurrent CNN models (1D and 2D CNN models respectively). Finally a fully-connecyed classifier is employed to identify the subjects. We have evaluated milliGait with 3 different subjects with an authentication accuracy of over 80%. © 2025 IEEE.

Cooperative driving that prioritizes global safety and efficiency over self-interest is crucial in ensuring smooth traffic flow and enhanced road safety. However, experiencing noncooperative driving is common under heterogeneous and chaotic on-road traffic conditions. While non-cooperativeness is often context-dependent and assessed during direct vehicle interactions, it can be inferred through longitudinal analysis of driving patterns from vehicular kinematics data. This behavior not only adversely affects the vehicle itself but also has a cascading impact on nearby vehicles, ultimately disrupting overall traffic flow. In this study, we quantify a vehicle's non-cooperativeness using kinematic data and further model its cascading effects on nearby cooperative vehicles. Experimental analysis was conducted using the SUMO traffic simulator and the TraCI interface to assess the impact of non-cooperativeness on overall traffic dynamics. This research is among the first to examine the cascading effects of a vehicle's non-cooperativeness on its cooperative nearby vehicles. © 2025 IEEE.

In corporate settings, conferences, or classrooms, an orator relies on manual slide transitions, which can disrupt their presentation flow. Presentation devices can be inaccessible due to the physical limitations of individuals, reducing engagement with the audience. Traditionally used remote-controlled wireless presenters are hand-held devices that usually require a compatible connector slot for the presentation device and partially engage one hand of the orator. To ease the hand-free presentation of slides, we introduce SlidEar, a voice-assisted smart slide supervision successfully tested on eSense in-ear wearables. SlidEar leverages voice recognition fusion with wearable sensors to facilitate seamless slide operations. It allows real-time feedback on natural language commands during the presentation of slides. Compared with conventional methods, SlidEar enhances engagement and accessibility through hand-free in-ear placement and helps the orator focus on delivering their content without any disruption or distraction. The evaluation shows promising results that improve the presentation experience profusion. SlidEar significantly reduces errors and can be widely adopted in diverse presentation scenarios. © 2025 IEEE.

The effect of twisted tape inserts on the heat transfer in pipes of two types of cross-sections (circular and square) has been investigated numerically. The improvement in the heat transfer coefficient by incorporating the insert has been quantified using a parameter . While a modest improvement has been observed in the case of airflow, a significant improvement in has been obtained for water flow. For a given mass flow rate and area of flow, the insertion of a twisted tape results in greater improvement in heat transfer in the square pipe as compared to the circular pipe. Moreover, the pressure drop is smaller in the square pipe as compared to the circular one for the same insert. Therefore, the insertion of twisted tapes in square pipes will provide better performance compared to insertion of the same in circular pipes in connection with the design of heat exchangers. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Water is a significant resource in day-to-day life, and it usually requires technological association for comprehensive management. Smart Water Grids (SWG) typically use cyberphysical systems (CPS) to monitor several parameters associated with water quality and distribution, leveraging the possibility of performing remote operations. For robust architecture, remote operations rely on application-specific sensors, communication networks, edge control, and cloud computation. Needless to say, the centralized control of edge and cloud infrastructure is prone to attacks and failures, such as unauthorized access or single-point-of-failure. We propose TruChain, a Blockchain-based access control mechanism to eliminate the probability of access takeover and aggregate quorum-based validation on sensory data for transparent provenance reliability. We also provide access revocation to strengthen security by restricting access to sensitive data stored in a privately distributed cloud. We believe our solution has empirical decentralization and a verifiable authorization method by maintaining a tamper-evident, auditable trail of interactive events, building trust without third-party intervention. © 2025 IEEE.

The increasing use of Romanized typing for Indo-Aryan languages on social media poses challenges due to its lack of standardization and loss of linguistic richness. To address this, we propose a sentence-level back-transliteration approach using the LLaMa 3.1 model for Hindi. Leveraging fine-tuning with the Dakshina dataset, our approach effectively resolves ambiguities in Romanized Hindi text, offering a robust solution for converting it into the native Devanagari script. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Degrees of hyper-realism already attained by present-day deepfake technology poses one of the biggest social threats of today. Deepfakes may involve multiple forms of media including audio, video and images. While most of the literature deals with threats posed by visual synthetic media, the endeavor to uncover audio deepfakes is still evolving;it demands more extensive investigation. Our attempt towards audio deepfake detection in this article, involves investigating spectral patterns present in audio spectrograms, captured appropriately by a two-attention vision transformer model (SpecViT2A), finally exploited for discriminating synthetic audios from pristine ones. We employed our model for successful identification of audio as well as multimodal deepfakes, yielding best accuracy over 99%, F1-score 0.9911, and EER as low as 3.5 on ASVSpoof 2021. © 2025 IEEE.
