The performance of facial super-resolution methods relies on their ability to recover facial structures and salient features effectively. Even though the convolutional neural network and generative adversarial network-based methods deliver impressive performances on face hallucination tasks, the ability to use attributes associated with the low-resolution images to improve performance is unsatisfactory. In this paper, we propose an Attribute Guided Attention Generative Adversarial Network which employs novel attribute guided attention (AGA) modules to identify and focus the generation process on various facial features in the image. Stacking multiple AGA modules enables the recovery of both high and low-level facial structures. We design the discriminator to learn discriminative features exploiting the relationship between the high-resolution image and their corresponding facial attribute annotations. We then explore the use of U-Net based architecture to refine existing predictions and synthesize further facial details. Extensive experiments across several metrics show that our AGA-GAN and AGA-GAN+U-Net framework outperforms several other cutting-edge face hallucination state-of-the-art methods. We also demonstrate the viability of our method when every attribute descriptor is not known and thus, establishing its application in real-world scenarios. © 2021, CC BY.

To date, paper-based examinations are still in use worldwide on all levels of education levels (e.g. secondary, tertiary levels). However, literature regarding off-line automatic assessment systems employing off-line handwriting recognition is not numerous. This paper proposes an off-line automatic assessment system employing a hybrid feature extraction technique - a newly proposed Modified Direction and Gaussian Grid Feature (MDGGF), along with its enhanced technique. In this study other original feature extraction techniques, together with their enhanced features, were also used for feature extraction technique efficiency comparison purposes. Classifiers, namely artificial neural networks and support vector machines, were selected to be employed in the experiments. Two types of datasets were employed in the experiment for both feature extraction technique accuracy and efficiency comparisons. The best correctly recognised rate of 98.33% with 100% accuracy was obtained when employing the proposed MDGGF to the off-line automatic assessment system.

In construction or manufacturing industry, engineering drawings are used as blueprint or plan documents to facilitate the construction or manufacturing process. A fairly large construction project involves very large number of these documents, divided into different sub-sections. An engineer or architect often needs to refer different documents while preparing a new one or marking some irregularity in some document. Therefore they need to navigate through different files. It becomes an extremely difficult and time consuming task to move from one file to another in an interactive way. This paper describes an automated technique to access information from the existing drawing documents and create hyperlinks in order to enable the engineers to quickly navigate between files. The overall accuracy of our system for a class of documents is a decent 94.46%.

Text detection in video frames plays a vital role in enhancing the performance of information extraction systems because the text in video frames helps in indexing and retrieving video efficiently and accurately. This paper presents a new method for arbitrarily-oriented text detection in video, based on dominant text pixel selection, text representatives and region growing. The method uses gradient pixel direction and magnitude corresponding to Sobel edge pixels of the input frame to obtain dominant text pixels. Edge components in the Sobel edge map corresponding to dominant text pixels are then extracted and we call them text representatives. We eliminate broken segments of each text representatives to get candidate text representatives. Then the perimeter of candidate text representatives grows along the text direction in the Sobel edge map to group the neighboring text components which we call word patches. The word patches are used for finding the direction of text lines and then the word patches are expanded in the same direction in the Sobel edge map to group the neighboring word patches and to restore missing text information. This results in extraction of arbitrarily-oriented text from the video frame. To evaluate the method, we considered arbitrarily-oriented data, non-horizontal data, horizontal data, Hua's data and ICDAR-2003 competition data (Camera images). The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing method in terms of recall and f-measure.

In this paper, a new sequence matching algorithm called as Exemplary Sequence Cardinality (ESC) is proposed. ESC combines several abilities of other sequence matching algorithms e.g. DTW, SSDTW, CDP, FSM, MVM, OSB~1. Depending on the application domain, ESC can be tuned to behave such as these different sequence matching algorithms. Its generality and robustness comes from its ability to find subsequences (as in CDP and SSDTW), to skip outliers inside the target sequences (as in MVM and FSM) and also in the query sequence (as in OSB) and it has the ability to have many to one and one to many correspondences (as in DTW) between the elements of the query and the target sequences. It's special characteristic of skipping noisy elements from query sequence along with other afore mentioned properties gives it an edge over FSM. In case of word spotting application, the outliers skipping capability of ESC makes it less sensible to local variations in the spelling of words, and also to noise present in the query and/or in the target word images. Due to it's capability of sub-sequence matching, the ESC algorithm has the ability to retrieve a query inside a line or piece of line. Finally, its multiple matching facilities (many to one and one to many matching) is proven to be well advantageous in case of different length of target and query sequences due to the variability in scale, font, type/size factors. By experimenting on printed historical document images, we have demonstrated the interest of proposed ESC algorithm in specific cases when incorrect word segmentation and word level local variations occur regularly.

In graphical documents (map, engineering drawing), artistic documents etc. there exist many printed materials where text lines are not parallel to each other and they are multi-oriented and curve in nature. For the OCR of such documents we need to extract individual text lines from the documents. Extraction of individual text lines from multi-oriented and/or curved text document is a difficult problem. In this paper, we propose a novel method to extract individual text lines from such document pages and the method is based on the foreground and background information of the characters of the text. To take care of background information, water reservoir concept is used here. In the proposed scheme at first, individual components are detected and grouped into 3-character clusters using their inter-component distance, size and positional information. Applying concept of graph, initial 3-character clusters are merged to have larger cluster group. Using inter-character background information, orientations of the extreme characters of a larger cluster are decided and based on these orientation, two candidate regions are formed from the cluster. Finally, with the help of these candidate regions, individual lines are extracted. From the experiment, we obtained encouraging result.

This paper explores the utilization of product graph for spotting symbols on graphical documents. Product graph is intended to find the candidate subgraphs or components in the input graph containing the paths similar to the query graph. The acute angle between two edges and their length ratio are considered as the node labels. In a second step, each of the candidate subgraphs in the input graph is assigned with a distance measure computed by a random walk kernel. Actually it is the minimum of the distances of the component to all the components of the model graph. This distance measure is then used to eliminate dissimilar components. The remaining neighboring components are grouped and the grouped zone is considered as a retrieval zone of a symbol similar to the queried one. The entire method works online, i.e., it doesn't need any preprocessing step. The present paper reports the initial results of the method, which are very encouraging.

In this paper, a novel approach for writer identification from handwritten Telugu script is introduced. A new dataset of Telugu handwritten documents of 150 writers called the IIITS-THDB is created under this work for doing the experimental analysis and this dataset is made available publicly. Descriptive convolution based features are extracted from given handwritten text using directional filters. Feature reduction is performed to find the optimal linear subspace for the extracted features and identification is done using these reduced features. Smaller blocks of text with uniform textures are created using the available data that show an improved identification accuracy during experimentation. We also study the effects of noise and compare the results of our features with various other features over our dataset.

This paper presents a novel approach to generate synthetic dataset for handwritten word recognition systems. It is difficult to recognize handwritten scripts for which sufficient training data is not readily available or it may be expensive to collect such data. Hence, it becomes hard to train recognition systems owing to lack of proper dataset. To overcome such problems, synthetic data could be used to create or expand the existing training dataset to improve recognition performance. Any available digital data from online newspaper and such sources can be used to generate synthetic data. In this paper, we propose to add distortion/deformation to digital data in such a way that the underlying pattern is preserved, so that the image so produced bears a close similarity to actual handwritten samples. The images thus produced can be used independently to train the system or be combined with natural handwritten data to augment the original dataset and improve the recognition system. We experimented using synthetic data to improve the recognition accuracy of isolated characters and words. The framework is tested on 2 Indic scripts - Devanagari (Hindi) and Bengali (Bangla), for numeral, character and word recognition. We have obtained encouraging results from the experiment. Finally, the experiment with Latin text verifies the utility of the approach. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we present a scheme towards recognition of English character in multi-scale and multi-oriented environments. Graphical document such as map consists of text lines which appear in different orientation. Sometimes, characters in a single word may follow a curvilinear way to annotate the graphical curve lines. For recognition of such multi-scale and multi-oriented characters a Support Vector Machine (SVM) based scheme is presented in this paper. The feature used here is invariant to character orientation. Circular ring and convex hull have been used along with angular information of the contour pixels of the character to make the feature rotation invariant. We tested our proposed scheme on two different datasets. Combining circular and convex hull feature we have obtained 96.73% and 99.56% accuracy in these two datasets.
