Cloud-aided mobile edge networks (CAMENs) allow edge servers (ESs) to purchase resources from remote cloud servers (CSs), while overcoming resource shortage when handling computation-intensive tasks of mobile users (MUs). Conventional trading mechanisms (e.g., onsite trading) confront many challenges, including decision-making overhead (e.g., latency) and potential trading failures. This paper investigates a series of cross-layer matching mechanisms to achieve stable and cost-effective resource provisioning across different layers (i.e., MUs, ESs, CSs), seamlessly integrated into a novel hybrid paradigm that incorporates futures and spot trading. In futures trading, we explore an overbooking-driven aforehand cross-layer matching (OA-CLM) mechanism, facilitating two future contract types: contract between MUs and ESs, and contract between ESs and CSs, while assessing potential risks under historical statistical analysis. In spot trading, we design two backup plans respond to current network/market conditions: determination on contractual MUs that should switch to local processing from edge/cloud services;and an onsite cross-layer matching (OS-CLM) mechanism that engages participants in real-time practical transactions. We next show that our matching mechanisms theoretically satisfy stability, individual rationality, competitive equilibrium, and weak Pareto optimality. Comprehensive simulations in real-world and numerical network settings confirm the corresponding efficacy, while revealing remarkable improvements in time/energy efficiency and social welfare. In this study, an evolutionary thermodynamic technique was developed for the optimization of heat exchanger circuitry. The developed technique is capable of handling the implementation of genetic operators with an unrestrained number and location of splitting and merging nodes while ensuring circuitry feasibility and manufacturability. The optimization tool was used to clarify the optimal heat transfer features in relation to the thermophysical and transport characteristics of the refrigerant and to provide a thermodynamic interpretation of the optimization results to extract general design guidelines. Circuitry optimization was conducted for a finned-tube evaporator with 36 tubes integrated into a thermodynamic cycle under a given cooling capacity, superheating degree, and boundary conditions representative of air-conditioning applications. The consistency between the minimum entropy generation and the maximum coefficient of performance (COP) was demonstrated under these settings. Furthermore, the thermodynamic interrelations between the minimum entropy generation and maximum COP are discussed, and optimal heat exchanger configurations that maximize the performance of each refrigerant by minimizing friction and heat transfer irreversibility are proposed. Consequently, the evaporator outlet pressure increases, thus lowering the compression ratio and maximizing the COP. The proposed optimization method maximizes the benefits of low-GWP alternative refrigerants and shows that low-GWP zeotropic mixtures exhibit the largest benefit from the developed circuitry optimization procedure and may achieve a performance comparable to that of R32 and higher than that of R410A by approaching a Lorenz cycle operation. © 2024, The Authors. This paper presents a case study of the application of Lean Information Management and Data Visualization to improve the information flows of an improvement suggestions system in a manufacturing company. The process was mapped and the wastes to which it and the resulting data were subject were identified. Since the process lacked key performance indicators capable of demonstrating its status, to support decision-making, a solution was implemented using the Lean Information Management and the Microsoft Power BI tool to provide the main participants of the process with a set of key performance indicators, through data visualization in a structured, simple, appealing, and intuitive way. The validation with end-users allows to affirm that the information created and transmitted through the new solution contributes to improving the quality and speed of decision-making, as aiming to increase the efficiency of the process, and the competitiveness between teams.

Optimal designs for the development of personalized treatment rules

We study the design of multi-armed parallel group clinical trials to estimate personalized treatment rules that identify the best treatment for a given patient with given covariates. Assuming that the outcomes in each treatment arm are given by a homoscedastic linear model, with possibly different variances between treatment arms, and that the trial subjects form a random sample from an unselected overall population, we optimize the (possibly randomized) treatment allocation allowing the allocation rates to depend on the covariates. We find that, for the case of two treatments, the approximately optimal allocation rule does not depend on the value of the covariates but only on the variances of the responses. In contrast, for the case of three treatments or more, the optimal treatment allocation does depend on the values of the covariates as well as the true regression coefficients. Numerical analysis of nonlinearity of outer hair cells based on comparison with measurements of DPOAEs

Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are considered to be generated by nonlinear force of the outer hair cells (OHC), and those frequencies and levels depend on the function curve of the force. Each order of distortion component is generally generated by a different degree term of a nonlinear function which is approximated by a power series. In this study, the nonlinear force of OHC was formulated based on the distortion components detected in measurements of DPOAEs. The input/output (I/O) functions of DPOAEs were measured in normal-hearing human ears. The I/O functions of each component showed different nonlinear curve and varied by stimuli conditions. Odd-order of distortion components (2f1-f2 or 3f2-2f1) were generated in all the ears, on the other hand, even-order of distortion components (f2-f1 or 3f1-f2) were seldom detected. Thus, nonlinear curvature of the force of OHC, POHC was formulated as a function including both of saturability and symmetry around operating point, because even-order of distortion components were barely detected. The I/O functions of DPOAEs obtained from numerical analysis using a finite-element model of the human cochlea which includes the force were compared with the measurements in normal-hearing human ears, and validity of the force was evaluated. As a result, the I/O functions of each component obtained from the volume displacement of the stapes footplate of the model showed different nonlinear curve. If the sound pressure gains of the middle ear are assumed to be constant at a certain frequency regardless of sound pressure level, the ease of saturation of the I/O function obtained from the model is considered to be comparable to that obtained from the measurements in the human ear. The curve of the I/O functions of each component obtained from the model approximately matched that obtained from the measurements.

Dysfunction of the outer hair cells (OHCs) is thought to lead to hearing loss. However, direct diagnosis of the OHC dysfunction is difficult, and the activity of the OHC is indirectly estimated by measuring distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). In this study, a finite-element model of the normal cochlea considering the activity of the OHC and hearing impairment models in which the activity of the OHC was partially absent were constructed. A pure tone or a complex tone was applied to the models, and the relationship between DPOAE level and non-active portion on the basilar membrane was investigated. As a result, it was speculated that the dysfunction of the OHC at the basal side of the position of the characteristic frequency for the input frequency affects pure tone hearing and DPOAE levels.

Semi-blind multiuser detection under the presence of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces

A multiuser multiple-input multiple-output wireless communication system is analytically studied, which operates with the aid of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). The intermediate RIS is equipped with multiple elements and operates via random phase rotations to simultaneously serve multiple users. Independent Rayleigh fading conditions are assumed among the included channels. The system performance is analytically studied when the linear yet efficient zero-forcing detection is implemented at the receiver. In particular, the outage performance is derived in closed-form expression for different system configuration setups with regards to the available channel state information at the receiver. Further, a joint coherent/noncoherent linear detection is analytically presented. Finally, some new engineering insights are provided, such as how the channel state information and/or the volume of antenna/RIS arrays impact on the overall system performance as well as the arising efficiency on the performance/complexity tradeoff by utilizing the joint coherent/noncoherent scheme. © 2021, CC BY.

Ensuring trustworthiness is fundamental to the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that is considered societally responsible, particularly in cancer diagnostics, where a misdiagnosis can have dire consequences. Current digital pathology AI models lack systematic solutions to address trustworthiness concerns arising from model limitations and data discrepancies between model deployment and development environments. To address this issue, we developed TRUECAM, a framework designed to ensure both data and model trustworthiness in non-small cell lung cancer subtyping with whole-slide images. TRUECAM integrates 1) a spectral-normalized neural Gaussian process for identifying out-of-scope inputs and 2) an ambiguity-guided elimination of tiles to filter out highly ambiguous regions, addressing data trustworthiness, as well as 3) conformal prediction to ensure controlled error rates. We systematically evaluated the framework across multiple large-scale cancer datasets, leveraging both task-specific and foundation models, illustrate that an AI model wrapped with TRUECAM significantly outperforms models that lack such guidance, in terms of classification accuracy, robustness, interpretability, and data efficiency, while also achieving improvements in fairness. These findings highlight TRUECAM as a versatile wrapper framework for digital pathology AI models with diverse architectural designs, promoting their responsible and effective applications in real-world settings. © 2024, CC BY.

Japan revised and implemented the Occupational Safety and Health Act in December 2015 to mandate that businesses with 50 or more workers have all of their workers tested for stress annually. In China, one effect of the 'one child policy' and the nuclearization of the family has been that the number of children has decreased, while the number of elderly people living alone continues to grow. This growth is increasing the demand for long-term care workers. However, because the aging of the Chinese population has been more rapid than in Japan, and China has yet to develop a long-term care system to cope with the aging of its population, the burden on long-term care staff appears to be increasing. Although the resulting need for more support for long-term care staff has become an issue, China has yet to develop a mental health policy like that of Japan that mandates the monitoring of mental health, for example, through annual testing of workers for stress. As a result, the factors underlying long-term care worker stress have yet to be *** study attempted to discover, through a comparison of long-term care worker stress in Japan and China, the kinds of job-related stress care workers tended to have and what the principal underlying factors resulting in high levels of stress may be in each country. To that end, data were collected on workers' psychological and physical stress using the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire (BJSQ) and analyzed to find out how stress may differ by country, gender, job responsibilities, having to work night shifts, or having certain qualifications. © 2020 IEEE.
