In the present paper we proceed the data-driven modeling of a two degrees of freedom (2-DOF) piezoelectric micromanipulator through models with the Nonlinear AutoRegressive with eXogenous inputs (NARX) structure and real acquired data. We show the results when the system is excited at high frequencies, aiming towards rapid and precise micropositioning. The order of NARX the models are increased until they satisfy the statistical tests based on higher-order correlations and the multiple correlation coefficients, which are close to unity for both measured outputs. The results herein presented encourage the use of data-driven methods for modeling piezoelectric micromanipulators. © 2018 AACC.

Industry 4.0 has recently become an ubiquitous topic of study both by academics and practitioners. Beyond the technology application domain, one major issue that most organizations have to face when structuring their efforts towards Industry 4.0 is the identification of viable opportunities for the deployment of Industry 4.0-related technologies. Proof of concept projects are usually developed to address this, as they are an exploratory means to quickly assess the application of a given technology to a specific context. If results are positive, these projects may grow into larger projects that will be used to deploy the considered technologies in a wider scale. This work aims to propose a framework that helps facilitate the assessment of proof of concept projects and their transition into wider scale projects. This framework is based both in the existing literature on Industry 4.0 technologies and in case studies of proof of concept projects that were used to assess such technologies. The framework is composed of three main components: the technologies being evaluated, the design objectives that they meet and the outcomes that are expected. The relationships among these components is also considered, and a process that mediates their use is proposed. © 2018 Institute of industrial Engineers (IIE). All rights reserved.

Plagiarism in the education sector is as serious issues. In 2015 Indonesia ministry of research, technology and higher education stated to eradicate the plagiarism, and after 2 years the similar statement by Indonesia ministry of research, technology, and higher education. The plagiarism becomes the serious program by the ministry. The plagiarism in higher education happened, the faculty member or even a professor found did the plagiarism. Therefore, this paper research conducted using descriptive analysis methodology to elaborate on deep the correlation plagiarism variables. Hence, warding off the plagiarism might possible to perform using the applications. The aim of this research to find the correlation variables that might use to ward off the plagiarism in the future. The very interesting result from 15 questioners and the report shows there are several significant correlation variables of the plagiarism. © 2018 IEEE.

For damage detection, this research article discusses an easy-to-compute damage index derived from the governing dynamic of the structure that has potential practical application in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The research uses simplified structural models to explore the sensitivity of the index to damages, to compare the index performance with a traditional but popular damage detection method, and to understand the local/global predictive capability of the index. The research uses two simple models, namely, single- and two-degree-of-freedom systems. The results suggest that the damage index is local, that can only monitor damages occurring near the points of measurements, but it is sensitive to damages, unlike the natural frequency, which is global but less sensitive.

Understanding the reliability of engineering methods is crucial for its adoption and deployment. This research focuses on the reliability of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) method via the use of the F statistic for damage detection. To the author best knowledge, the method is rather classic but its realibility has not been discussed in the context of a large data size. Priory, the research anticipates that the accuracy is a function of the damage level. In this study, we evaluate 3500 cases with five levels of structural integrity, namely, healthy condition and damaged conditions with 1%, 5%, 10%, and 20% damage levels. The dataset is established via a numerical analysis of a seven degree-of-freedom system loaded with a concentrated dynamic force with random magnitude. A spring on the system is reduced in its stiffness to simulate damages. Our significant findings are the following: it is challenging for the PSD-based method to differentiate the healthy condition from the damaged conditions when the damage level is small. However, the reliability is high at 95% probability when the structural integrity has dropped by five percent.

Within unmanned aerial vehicles on-going research topics, automatic target recognition is acquiring relevance. This is due to the easiness with which it is possible to acquire such devices. In order to do this, signal processing and classification techniques could be adopted. Also, in order to improve the classification ratio, optimization techniques could be used. This subject is object of study for many researchers, but the authors worry about the lack of information while using single-objective optimization techniques. The proposed work comprises the application of multi-objective optimization design in order to create an automatic target recognition system to discriminate different types of unmanned aerial vehicles. In order to accomplish this, a K-band radar system is used to send and receive electromagnetic signals, which are then processed with feature extraction techniques, and finally, applied on an artificial neural network system. In order to improve the system's classification ratio, the classifier is defined as a multi-objective problem, and evolutionary multi-objective optimization techniques are applied. Finally, in order to select the best possible trade-off, the level diagrams multi-criteria decision making methodology is used to compare different solutions. © 2017

Manufacturing has been changing drastically the way it approaches facility design and implementation, that is, there is a growing adoption of digital techniques. This paper intends to determine the theoretical concepts and guidelines for assisting the study of alternatives for problem-solving in a specific case of an automaker digital manufacturing project. The main objective of the research is to determine the theoretical components that will assist in the forwarding of solutions to the problems observed in the current model of project management of digital manufacturing projects. The conceptual guidelines proposed based on systematic literature and guided the construction of research protocol that collects data from technical visits (semi-participative observation), technical documents and procedures, information systems log and archives, and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis use the mechanism of triangulation and workshops for producing a conceptual analysis about how each factor can assist in addressing the solving of the issues observed, building the theoretical constructs. The manufacturing engineering team could identify strengths and weakness on the ongoing practices and better plan improvements for reaching opportunities and mitigating threats/risks. The findings are classified in the following aspects: cultural, technology, knowledge content, organization, processes, and project management;and showed a complete analysis on how ready is the organization for developing digital manufacturing projects. © 2018 Institute of industrial Engineers (IIE). Multi-objective optimisation is a valuable tool for tuning dynamical systems when simultaneous optimisation performance objectives are in conflict. When the goal is tuning the parameters of a synthetic biology device, mismatch between the model implemented in silico -a more or less coarse simplification of the real system- and the actual in vivo implementation might lead to a disagreement between the in silico and in vivo design objectives for a given solution from the Pareto front. Here, we propose an iterative closed-loop multi-objective optimisation approach where the new information provided by the difference between the in silico Pareto front and its in vivo implementation is used to improve the parametric model. This aims to minimise the discrepancies between in silico and in vivo performance objectives while preserving the trade-off order among solutions. As a proof-of-concept we consider the problem of tuning a synthetic gene circuit used as feedforward-feedback controller for the expression of a protein of interest. We use an extended parametric model of the gene synthetic circuit to represent the in vivo set up and a simplified one for the in silico one.

This paper addresses the problem of maintenance facilities (depot) location in electric power distribution systems with a focus on strategic planning. Power interruptions can be harmful for both society and distribution companies. Determining the optimal number and sites of depot location to handle power interruptions in the long term can improve the quality of service. Through a good depot location, the distance from depots to work orders (WO) is minimized, operational costs can be minimized and customer interruption duration is reduced, which is a good indicator of the reliability of the system. The problem was solved by a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and a Mixed Integer Linear programming (MILP) model. In addition to the real instance, some synthetic ones were generated to compare both approaches in large-sized scenarios. The computational results show that the two approaches are complementary strategies, being presented the scenarios where each proposal could provide better results.

Metaheuristic algorithms have provided efficient tools to designers by which it became possible to determine the optimum solutions of optimization problems encountered in several fields such as engineering, finance and computation. Generally metaheuristics are based on metaphors that are taken from nature or some other processes. Recently, an optimization metaheuristic paradigm based on the social behavior of the crows, called crow search algorithm (CSA), has been proposed. The idea of CSA is motivated from the storing process of the excess food in hiding places then restoring it in the necessary time. The CSA has many favorable characteristics, such as ease of implementation, the need to adjust only a few parameters, a favorable balance between search diversification and intensification, and fast convergence and high sensitivity. However, to enhance the performance of the standard CSA approach, this paper proposes to tune the control parameters using population diversity information and normal (Gaussian) probability distribution function. Loney's solenoid benchmark and circular antenna array design problems are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the conventional CSA and the proposed variant. Simulation results and comparisons with the CSA demonstrated that the performance of the proposed MCSA approach is promising in electromagnetics optimization. © 2018 IEEE.
