Nature-inspired algorithms of the swarm intelligence field perform powerfully and efficiently in solving global optimization problems. Inspired by nature, these metaheuristic algorithms have obtained promising performance over continuous domains of optimization problems. Recently, a new swarm intelligence approach called firefly algorithm (FA) has emerged. The FA is a stochastic paradigm based on the idealized behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. However, to achieve good performance with FA, the tuning of control parameters is essential as its performance is sensitive to the choice of the randomization parameter (α) setting. This paper introduces a FA approach combined with chaotic sequences generated by Zaslavskii map (FACZ) to tune the randomization parameter. Simulations of Loney's solenoid benchmark problem examine the effectiveness of the conventional FA and the proposed FACZ algorithms. Simulation results and comparisons with the FACZ demonstrated that the performance of the FA is promising in the Loney's solenoid case.

In order to improve equipment efficiency in terms of performance, energy consumption and degradation for example, the industry has increased the use of control systems as the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) to a new baseline. This structure has few parameters to adjust and it is easy to implement practically. However, there are some requirements often included on multivariable systems that cannot be solved concurrently by classical methods. To solve this problem, the current paper approaches the application of Multiobjective Differential Evolution (MODE), Multiobjective Harmony Search (MOHS) and Multiobjective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) on multivariable PID controllers tuning. Moreover, an improved version of MOPSO (I-MOPSO) is proposed and its performance is compared with the other algorithms. In order to validate it under control systems, the optimization technique is applied on a two degree of freedom robotic manipulator. Finally, a detailed analysis is made on the I-MOPSO achievements.

This works proposes an electrocardiogram based approach for left ventricle hypertrophy (LVH) classification. LVH classification is based on features extracted from the ECG signal, where the main features are the ones related to the QRS wave amplitude and duration. Instead of working on only one LVH criteria, we employed a score which explores the complementarity of the best criteria through a fusion strategy. The best criteria are the ones which discriminate normal and LVH ECGs according to the t-test. We carried out experiments in a database with a group of fifty men, where a half has LVH. The gold standard to detect LVH was the left ventricle mass index measured using echocardiography. Our approach achieved a sensitivity of 69.7%, outperforming all LVH criteria. An multistage approach is proposed merging a deterministic and evolutionary algorithm for PI controller tuning. This technique is formulated through design of a multi-objective optimization procedure, to ensure the construction of Pareto frontier that guarantee well distribution and exclude the non-Pareto and local Pareto points. This procedure focuses on reliability-based optimization instances. To validate the approach, we will consider the Boiler Control Benchmark. The results of its usefulness for controller tuning is demonstrated.

Virtual Humans (VHs) have been employed in multidisciplinary fields to advance interpersonal skills critical to many professional, including law enforcement agents, military personnel, managers, doctors, lawyers and other professionals. Law enforcement agencies in particular have faced a growing need to develop human to human interpersonal training to increase interviewing and interrogation skills. In this paper, we present a prototype VE that has been developed to provide law enforcement agents with effective interview and interrogation training and experiential learning. The virtual training environment will need to be tested and formally evaluated to verify the benefits compared to live exercises and traditional training techniques. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Considering that technical skill is the major determinant characteristic of success among competitive swimmers, it is important to coaches to quantify the differences that make one swimmer more efficient than another. One of the most important grants in swimming is the velocity, which can be related to drag forces and provide substantial information about the swimmer technique. The main purpose of this study was to determine the best model to compare swimmers in terms of velocity. In this work, a Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF-NN) was used to model the nonlinearity of swim velocity time series. The RBF-NN parameters were adjusted by using four multiobjective optimization methods. The best results in terms of RBF-NN configuration were obtained by the Differential Evolution based algorithms.

We present a simulation model of colorectal cancer in a heterogeneous population of individuals. The progression of cancer is modeled and is affected by individuals' characteristics and their screening and mode decisions. A discrete choice model determines these compliance and modality choices. We present a framework for analyzing interventions that affect final outcomes by systematically affecting a change in individual choice. Moreover, recognizing that different sub-populations respond differently to interventions, we present a procedure for choosing the most effective intervention, as defined by outcomes. For this cancer model, we evaluate the cost effectiveness of public health interventions that affect people's choice behavior, using as metrics for cost effectiveness downstream outcomes such as cost of care and life years lost to cancer. We use an original comprehensive synthetic population dataset that represents the population of the State of North Carolina.

High level sports require a steady intensification of training in order to raise the athletes' performance. With the purpose of support swimmers and coaches new biomechanical analysis are been performed, becoming one of the most studied areas in swimming. By using technology resources, Esignificant results related to performance improvements are being achieved. Specific analysis of the movements, strength, velocity and projection allow identifying relevant points that directly impact athletes' results. In this context, this work uses a Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF-NN) with training combining the Gustafson-Kessel clustering method and the proposed Modified Differential Evolution (MDE) in order to perform the swimmer velocity profile identification. The main idea is to obtain the dynamic of the velocity profile and to use it to improve the athletes' swim style. Differential Evolution (DE) is an evolutionary algorithm that uses a rather greedy and less stochastic approach to solve problems when compared to other evolutionary methods [1]. However, to achieve good performance with DE, the tuning of control parameters is essential as its performance is sensitive to the choice of the mutation and crossover settings. On the other hand, the RBF-NN is a powerful approach for nonlinear identification. This paper combines the two strategies described above proposing a modified DE algorithm based on the association of a sinusoidal signal and chaotic sequences generated by logistic map for the mutation factor tuning. By using data collected from breaststroke and crawl swim style of an elite female swimmer, the validity and the accuracy of the RBF-NN model have been tested by simulations. Results reveal that it is feasible to establish a good model to represent data experimental related to swimming field. Identification results show that MDE outperforms both other tested classical DE approaches for training RBF-NNs in terms of solution quality. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper proposes three dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) topologies. Such configurations are able to compensate voltage sags/swells in three-phase four-wire (3P4W) systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions. The proposed systems in this work use two independent dc-links. The complete control system, including the PWM technique, is developed and comparisons between the proposed configurations and a conventional one are performed. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the theoretical approach.

The theme of sustainable development has increasingly impacted the spheres of Brazilian society and has contributed to greater awareness to the need of natural resources conservation as well as issues on how to continue promoting socio-economic development of regions. One of the key issues for sustainable development is the generation of electricity with more use of renewable sources and, therefore, less environmental degradation. In this scenario, historically, Paraná State of Brazil has been one of the largest producers of electricity in the country, almost entirely from hydraulic source, due to the large existing river basin in the state. However, the use of this source in Brazil is declining due to depletion of water potential and also the pressure of society with respect to environmental, social and economic impacts caused by damming of rivers and flooding of cities and areas to form large reservoirs. To overcome these limitations, other sources have been studied and used, such as biomass and wind. Photovoltaic generation has been contemplated in Brazilian government policies only to supply electricity with off-grid systems in remote locations. However, due to the recent Resolution 482/2012 of ANEEL (Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency), which establishes rules for micro and mini-generation of electricity, it is possible that consumers install grid connected photovoltaic systems up to 1 MWp, as have been widely used in the urban environment installed or integrated on roofs as a form of distributed generation, particularly in Europe, where counts with installed capacity in GW range, while in Brazil it counts only with a few MW. Given this new perspective of growth of the Brazilian photovoltaic electricity generation this paper presents the potential of solar photovoltaic power generation in Paraná State, Brazil, with a comparative analysis with the potential presented by some European countries.
