Illegal tapping of fuel pipelines has recently become one of the most relevant safety problems faced by the industry. Hundreds of illegal interventions have been reported around the world, causing a significant number of deaths, relevant impacts on the environment, and capital loss. Therefore, it is important to develop systems that are able to detect such scenarios at an early stage, enabling a fast counteract. To this end, machine learning algorithms can train models on available data for detecting future issues. Most recently, ensemble learning and dynamic classifier selection (DCS) techniques have been achieving promising results in supervised learning tasks. Such models are usually trained based on a single criterion. However, it is desirable to take into account both the number of false positives (FP) and false negatives (FN) for the illegal tapping detection task, since they are conflicting and both lead to financial losses and/or accidents. Therefore, this work proposes a novel DCS technique based on multiple criteria, namely overall local class-specific accuracy (OLCA), which employs multi-criteria decision making for dynamically selecting the best classifier for a new sample given the local true positive and negative ratios. A numerical experiment is conducted for assessing the generalization performance of the proposed method in an oil pipeline, with the goal of detecting illegal taping using pressure transient signals. Results show that OLCA is able to reduce the number of both FP and FN when dynamically selecting the classifiers of a baseline Random Forest ensemble.

Control of industrial plants is an important engineering field of study, where the optimization of such processes can lead to better product quality and higher profit. The present work deals with the optimization of an industrial gasifier, proposed as a benchmark challenge by ALSTOM Power Technologies in 2002. Researchers from around the globe proposed different methods for optimizing such system, using linear and nonlinear system identification techniques, different controller schemes, such as proportional-integral-derivative and model predictive controllers, and search methods for controller tuning. The authors care for the study of a methodology that can generalize the controller optimization process of real industrial systems, where linear system identification can lead to simpler systems, which are used to design more robust controllers. The proposed work deals with linear system identification and multiobjective optimization for the gasifier's controller design. To do so, the authors divide the problem in two steps, the linear system identification, where step functions are fed to the gasifier in order to detect the output response of the system, and the design of a proportional-integral-derivative controller, where spherical pruned multi-objective differential evolution algorithm is used in order to optimize the controller gains. The proposed method, unfortunately, does not provide an optimal controller, which can be explained by the complexity of the benchmark system. With such results, the authors believe a better multi-objective problem definition is necessary. Also, it is concluded that such benchmark presents a real challenge for future controller design methndologies.

Real-world classification problems generally deal with imbalanced data, where one class represents the majority of the data set. The present work deals with event detection on a drinking-water quality time series, where the presence of a quality event is the minority class. In order to solve such problems, supervised learning algorithms are recommended. Researchers have also used multi-objective optimization (MOO) in order to generate diverse models to build ensembles of classifiers. Although MOO has been used for ensemble member generation, there is a lack on it's application for member selection, which is usually done by selecting a specific subset from the resulting models, or by using meta-algorithms, such as boosting. The proposed work comprises the application of MOO design in the whole process of ensemble generation. To do so, one multi-objective problem (MOP) is defined for the creation of a set of non-dominated solutions with Pareto-optimal support vector machines (SVM). After that, a second MOP is defined for the selection of such SVMs as members of an ensemble. Such methodology is compared to other member selection methods, such as: the single best classifier, an ensemble composed of the full set of non-dominated solutions, and the selection of a specific subset from the Pareto front. Results show that the proposed method is suitable for the creation of ensembles, achieving the highest classification scores.

In non-Hermitian scattering problems the behavior of the transmission probability is very different from its Hermitian counterpart;it can exceed unity or even be divergent, since the non-Hermiticity can add or remove the probability to and from the scattering system. In the present paper, we consider the scattering problem of a PT-symmetric potential and find a counter-intuitive behavior. In the usual PT-symmetric non-Hermitian system, we would typically find stationary semi-Hermitian dynamics in a regime of weak non-Hermiticity but observe instability once the non-Hermiticity goes beyond an exceptional point. Here, in contrast, the behavior of the transmission probability is strongly non-Hermitian in the regime of weak non-Hermiticity with divergent peaks, while it is superficially Hermitian in the regime of strong non-Hermiticity, recovering the conventional Fabry-Perot-type peak structure. We show that the unitarity of the S-matrix is generally broken in both of the regimes, but is recovered in the limit of infinitely strong non-Hermiticity. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become integral to modern construction management in China, yet its successful implementation has been hindered by a shortage of skilled BIM personnel and high turnover rates. This study investigates the key factors influencing turnover intention among BIM workers in China through a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. Survey data were collected from 558 BIM practitioners and researchers across various regions in China. The SEM results revealed that three work-related factors-management and staff cooperation, working hours, and satisfaction with salary and incentives-significantly affected BIM workers' turnover intentions. Notably, the influence of these factors on turnover intention was fully mediated by two pivotal attitudinal variables: job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Among the predictors, excessive working hours emerged as the most salient driver heightening turnover intention, whereas strong team cooperation and competitive, fair rewards reduce the propensity to leave by enhancing worker satisfaction and commitment. The integrated model developed in this research advances understanding of BIM workforce retention and can be generalized to similar project-based contexts. The findings provide an evidence-based foundation for policymakers and industry leaders to devise strategies (e.g., improving working conditions, strengthening organizational support) aimed at increasing job satisfaction and commitment, thereby mitigating turnover intention among BIM workers.

A system for automatic detection of road damages is essential for logistics management. At the core of the system lies an algorithm for classification of damages. This work intends to establish such an algorithm. In the current proposal, the algorithm receives data of the probe vehicle rate of rotations, extracts statistics descriptive from the data to produce a feature vector, and finally, feeds the vector to a simple-three-layer neural network to classify the damages. The types of damages are limited to four cases: normal, pothole, speed bump, and expansion joint. For the development, a probe vehicle is used to produce 400 empirical data involving those four damage cases. By using Monte Carlo approach, the established neural network model is evaluated. The results show that the approach is able to classify the cases with 85% accuracy. The study also finds that the rates of pitch and roll to be the determining factors. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Benefit for clinical melanoma treatments, the transdermal neoadjuvant therapy could reduce surgery region and increase immunotherapy efficacy. Using lipoplex (Lipo-PEG-PEI-complex, LPPC) encapsulated doxorubicin (DOX) and carrying CpG oligodeoxynucleotide;the transdermally administered nano-liposomal drug complex (LPPC-DOX-CpG) would have high cytotoxicity and immunostimulatory activity to suppress systemic metastasis of melanoma. LPPC-DOX-CpG dramatically suppressed subcutaneous melanoma growth by inducing tumor cell apoptosis and recruiting immune cells into the tumor area. Animal studies further showed that the colonization and growth of spontaneously metastatic melanoma cells in the liver and lung were suppressed by transdermal LPPC-DOX-CpG. Furthermore, NGS analysis revealed IFN-γ and NF-κB pathways were triggered to recruit and activate the antigen-presenting-cells and effecter cells, which could activate the anti-tumor responses as the major mechanism responsible for the therapeutic effect of LPPC-DOX-CpG. Finally, we have successfully proved transdermal LPPC-DOX-CpG as a promising penetrative carrier to activate systemic anti-tumor immunity against subcutaneous and metastatic tumor. © 2022

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system can be considered as an Internet-of-Things (IoT) system implemented to engineering structure to provide real-time information on the integrity of the structure. In doing so, the system acquires data from various sensors distributed across the structure and infers damage sensitive quantities. In the research, we proposed a damage index derived from the governing dynamics of the structure in the frequency domain. The proposal was empirically verified by applying the index to analyze the case of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to a harmonic load. The value of the damage index was computed at some points surrounding the crack to understand the effect of the distance of the monitoring point to the crack to the index sensitivity. The results suggest that the index is sensitive to the crack particularly when the observation point is near the crack.

Metaheuristic algorithm is a generic computational approach aiming at efficiently solving optimization problems, mainly global optimization problems. The No Free Lunch theorem states that no single algorithm can perform well on every optimization problem, encouraging the development of new optimization metaheuristics. Ant lion optimizer (ALO) is a nature inspired stochastic metaheuristic algorithm which mimics the hunting behavior of ant lions in nature using steps of hunting prey such as the random walk of ants, building traps, entrapment of ants in traps, catching preys, and re-building traps. In this paper, an ALO approach is adapted to multiobjective optimization (MOALO) using external archiving and ranking with crowding distance. Furthermore, a MOALO version with the control parameter setup based on Lozi map with chaotic dynamical behavior is also proposed to solve a Transformer Design Optimization (TDO) problem with two competing objectives. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated by the simulations applied to a TDO problem. © 2018 IEEE.

Organizational models of production systems that focus on services and servitization are experiencing an increase in an application. These models emphasize the value proposition for the customer and a better understanding of the value creation process. Additionally, the emergence of new technologies such as those associated with Industry 4.0 also requires well-structured and results-oriented processes. In this perspective, although there are several tools for measuring both operations and organizational performance, the literature still lacks tools that integrate and align these two perspectives, accounting for activities at the operational level that reflect objectives at the strategic level, and vice-versa. Therefore, a procedure for aligning process performance (operations' performance) and strategic performance (organizational performance) in a service context is proposed. This procedure is based on three main components identified through a literature review: (1) guidelines associated with enterprise engineering that focus on processes, developed by Deschamps (2013);(2) a set of critical success factors for implementation of performance measurement systems that focus on organizational performance, developed by Keathley (2016);and (3) ten determinants of service quality, proposed by Parasuraman (1985). The alignment procedure is presented as being mediated by Parasuraman's model, relating enterprise engineering guidelines and critical success factors. © 2018 Institute of industrial Engineers (IIE).
