Contingency factors and globalization phenomena are forcing companies to revise the way they conceive and manage their operations network. Operations strategic management systems should develop specific design requirements to deal with a complex and changing environment, that is, operations strategy plans should be continuously assed and updated. This paper frame a discussion based on operations strategy and performance measurement framework. Performance measurement roles are revised in order to assess their alignment to new design requirements for operations strategic management. Based on a set of updated performance measurement systems roles, a case study protocol is developed and applied to manufacturing and service companies. Although classical roles as performance monitoring and control are still the main focus of operations performance measurement systems, evidences collected show a growing use of these management systems for continuous improvement and change management processes.

The unscented Kalman filter (UKF) has become relatively a new technique used in a number of nonlinear estimation problems to overcome the limitation of Taylor series linearization. It uses a deterministic sampling approach known as sigma points to propagate nonlinear systems and has been discussed in many literature. However, a nonlinear smoothing problem has received less attention than the filtering problem. Therefore, in this article we examine an un-scented smoother based on Rauch-Tung-Striebel form for discrete-time dynamic systems. This smoother has advantages available in unscented transformation over approximation by Taylor expansion as well as its benefit in derivative free. This smoothing technique has been implemented and evaluated through Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, SLAM problem.

Authors have been studying the absorption of CO2 in the steelmaking slag. In this study, an application of the electric arc furnace slag after the carbonation to admixture of mortar was investigated with the JIS (A6206-1997) method for ground granulated blast-furnace slag for concrete. The percent flows for the test mortar were smaller than that for the standard mortar. The percent flow of the carbonated slag whose average particle size of more than approximately 4 μm increased with an increase in the average size of the particles. Because the compressive strengths of the test mortar cured for 91 days were almost the same as those cured 28 days, the slag after the carbonation was thought not to have self-hardening property for a medium and long term. The compressive strength for the test mortar was almost unchanged within a range of approximately 2 to 7 μm of the average particle size, and it in this range was highest. The activity indexes for the test mortar prepared with the slag after the carbonation ranged from approximately 40 to 60 %.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are seeing widespread use in military, scientific, and civilian sectors in recent years. As the mission demands increase, these systems are becoming more complicated. Omnidirectional camera is a vision sensor that can captures 360° view in a single frame. In recent years omnidirectional camera usage has experienced a remarkable increase in many fields, where many innovative research has been done. Although, it is very promising, employment of omnidirectional cameras in UAVs is quite new. In this paper, an innovative sensory system is proposed, that has an omnidirectional imaging device and a pan tilt zoom (PTZ) camera. Such a system combines the advantages of both of the camera systems. The system can track any moving object within its 360° field of view and provide detailed images of it. The detection of the moving object has been accomplished by an adaptive background subtraction method implemented on the lowered resolution images of the catadioptric camera. A novel algorithm has also been developed to estimate the relative distance of the object with respect to the UAV, using tracking information of both of the cameras. The algorithms are implemented on an experimental system to validate the approach. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

This paper presents a new adaptive fault-tolerant control system (AFTCS) against actuator failures. The AFTCS utilizes a hybrid of static and dynamic redundancies. In order to maintain the control performance, the redundancy-mode is selected appropriately to remove the effect of the failure. All the switching actions are executed based on only the input and error signals. Hence, any fault detector is not exploited. Furthermore, introducing an adaptive high-gain feedback controller makes it possible to achieve the λ-tracking in the presence of failure. In this paper, several simulation results for the CSTR are shown to confirm the effectiveness of the AFTCS.

In supply chains of petroleum industry, maintaining a proper inventory level for multiple petroleum products is a crucial issue. Basically, this chain has several elements like producer bases, consumer bases and terminals that are linked by means of a multi-modal transport network. These elements must cooperate to achieve the global goal of the system with a minimized cost. To achieve this goal, this paper presents a multiagent protocol for simultaneous negotiations based on the Contract-Net and the application of this in the chain aforementioned. As a result, this protocol proved to be very efficient to return a feasible solution in a low processing time.

We develop an algorithm for two-stage stochastic programming with a convex second stage program and with uncertainty in the right-hand side. The algorithm draws on techniques from bounding and approximation methods as well as sampling-based approaches. In particular, we sequentially refine a partition of the support of the random vector and, through Jensen's inequality, generate deterministically valid lower bounds on the optimal objective function value. An upper bound estimator is formed through a stratified Monte Carlo sampling procedure that includes the use of a control variate variance reduction scheme. The algorithm lends itself to a stopping rule theory that ensures an asymptotically valid confidence interval for the quality of the proposed solution. Computational results illustrate our approach.

Achieving high performance optimization algorithms for embedded applications can be very challenging, particularly when several requirements such as high accuracy computations, short elapsed time, area cost, low power consumption and portability must be accomplished. This paper proposes a hardware implementation of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm with passive congregation (HPPSOpc), which was developed using several floating-point arithmetic libraries. The passive congregation is a biological behavior which allows the swarm to preserve its integrity, balancing between global and local search. The HPPSOpc architecture was implemented on a Virtex5 FPGA device and validated using two multimodal benchmark problems. Synthesis, simulation and execution time results demonstrates that the passive congregation approach is a low cost solution for solving embedded optimization problems with a high performance.

An advanced two-fluid model has been developed in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). In this model, an interface tracking method is combined with a two-fluid model. In this procedure, liquid clusters and bubbles larger than a computational cell are calculated using the interface tracking method, and those smaller than a cell are simulated by the two-fluid model. A turbulent dispersion force term is one of the most important constitutive equations for advanced two-fluid model. We have developed the new model for turbulent dispersion force and verified the developed model using the 3-dimensional two-fluid model code ACE-3D, and the comparisons between the results of the analyses and air-water two-phase flow experiments in 200 mm diameter pipe. In this study, to verify the applicability of developed model for middle diameter vertical pipe, we compared between the analyses of results and air-water two-phase flow experiments in 38 mm diameter pipe. © 2011 The Japan Society of mechanical Engineers.
