Traffic flow characterization is critical for transportation systems and urban infrastructure planning. In most major cities in Latin America, this characterization is carried out visually by a group of observers during one-hour sampling periods. Automating this process should result in higher consistency and reliability in the output statistics, as well as helping keep the people in charge of this process safe. In this project, an automatic vehicle counting and classification system prototype is presented. The system uses video images previously recorded thru a camcorder and, upon an initial setup session, proves capable of detecting, counting and classifying the passing vehicles to an acceptable error rate. The preliminary evaluation is promising and provides a solid base for the development of the complete system.

The intake air control system of a gasoline engine is a typical nonlinear system, and included among the adverse fac-tors that always induce poor idle-speed control stability are dead time and disturbances in the intake air control process. In this paper, to improve the responsiveness when idling with regard to disturbances, a mean-value engine model (MVEM) with dead time was constructed as the control object, and the two servo structures of sliding mode control (SMC) were studied for better idle control performance, especially in transient process of speed change. The simulation results confirmed that under the constraint condition of control input, the robustness of idle speed control that is being subjected to torque disturbances and noise disturbances can be greatly improved by use of the servo structure II.

This paper explores two important themes in the implementation of RFID in supply chain management: (1) analyzing differences between actual (perceived) and potential (expected) key benefits to see if there are benefit shortfalls for the key performances;and (2) performing a two-dimensional expectation- perception analysis (EPA) for the purpose of identifying competitive niche and strategically allocating and adjusting the company's resources. Empirical data were collected through surveys of executives of selected Taiwan based companies who had experienced RFID adoption in the supply chain practices. Finally, managerial implications and suggestions were provided for companies and industries that may be considering the adoption of RFID in SCM.
