In this work, an array-type micro cell chip with micro temperature sensors (iMTS) and a thermoelectric device was fabricated to investigate temperature effect on fluid-phase endocytosis (FPED) of HeLa cells at the single-cell level. Using two different molecular probes, large-scale single-cell FPED data (more than 500 cells) demonstrated the existence of a critical endocytosis temperature of 16-17°C for HeLa cells. Activation energy at higher temperature range (18 kcal/mol). This energy difference suggests that en-docytosis can occur through different mechanisms at different temperatures.

Effect of resin impregnation on mechanical properties of rice hull silica carbon

New utilization of rice hull, which is one of the agricultural by-products in Japan, is required to use as an industrial resource from a viewpoint of recycling. The rice hull silica carbon (RHS carbon) material is manufactured by mixing and impregnating the rice hull with a phenol resin, and then carbonizing in a nitrogen gas atmosphere at high temperatures. The RHS carbon has the natural porous structure that is originated from the natural structure of the rice hull. Since the RHS carbon has excellent frictional properties, it is expected to use as a friction element in a linear motion slider. However, the mechanical properties of the RHS carbon were dispersed largely, and were strongly affected by the making process. In this study, the authors discussed the effects of the impregnation rates of the phenol resin, and obtained the optimal impregnation rate to achieve the low dispersion in the mechanical properties. Moreover, the effect of the molding method on the mechanical properties was evaluated by some mechanical tests. © 2010 Soc. Mater. Eng. Resour.

The ABET criteria for engineering programs include that students should have "an ability to apply mathematics, science and engineering", "an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs", "an ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems", and "an ability to communicate effectively", and "a knowledge of contemporary issues"1. One manner of integrating teamwork and engineering contexts in undergraduate engineering is through the educational construct of Model-Eliciting Activities (MEAs). MEAs are a class of interdisciplinary problems designed to simulate authentic, client-driven situations in classroom settings. MEAs allow teachers and researchers to observe student development of conceptual models by requiring students to make their models explicit through design-test-revise cycles. The solution of an MEA requires the use of one or more mathematical or engineering concepts that are unspecified by the problem - students must make new sense of their existing knowledge and understandings to formulate a generalizable mathematical model that can be used by the client to solve the given and similar problems. An MEA creates an environment in which skills beyond mathematical abilities are valued because the focus is not on the use of prescribed equations and algorithms but on the use of a broader spectrum of skills required for effective engineering problem solving. Carefully constructed MEAs can begin to prepare students to communicate and work effectively in teams;to adopt and adapt conceptual tools;to construct, describe, and explain complex systems;and to cope with complex systems. MEAs provide a learning environment that is tailored to a more diverse population than typical engineering course experiences as they allow students with different backgrounds and values to emerge as talented, and that adapting these types of activities to engineering courses has the potential to go beyond "filling the gaps" to "opening doors" to wom

In this paper, we examine a Spherical Ultrasonic Motor (SUSM) for the haptic display system. Experimental system consists of a force sensor and a SUSM comprising one spherical rotor and three ring-shaped stators. The stator is made from an elastic body and piezoelectric elements for vibration. The stators and the rotor are in pressure contact with each other. The frequency and the phase difference of the stators' vibration can be controlled and we can generate torque of the rotor. Some experiments were briefly investigated to examine the performances of the proposed haptic display method.

The effectiveness of bio-oils' heterogeneously-catalyzed ethanolysis, using groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) crude oil, activated calcium oxide (h-CaO), and surface-modified activated calcium oxide (s-CaO) for biodiesel production in developing countries, was studied in comparison with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] in terms of reaction, effect of catalyst type and loading of 1.0 wt%, molar ratio of 9:1, time ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 h, at 78°C and stirring speed of 1000 rpm. Ca(OH)2 was inferior to KOH, h-CaO and s-CaO regardless of reaction time, achieving fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) yields, after 0.5, 2, and 3 h, of 0.24 ± 0.03 wt%, 1.09 ± 0.72 wt%, 8.08 ± 0.80 wt% comparing 56.19 ± 1.98 wt%, 76.57 ± 2.20 wt%, 76.99 ± 4.18 wt% , and 62.32 ± 1.95 wt%, 88.81 ± 0.82 wt%, 85.30 ± 4.56 wt%, and 51.40 ± 1.76 wt%, 81.21 ± 1.30 wt%, 83.23 ± 1.09 wt%, respectively. The activity of h-CaO, s-CaO and KOH agreed quite well showing the comparable effectiveness of the catalysts on ethanolysis. Generally, yields decreased after 2-h, due to product adsorption after 2 h. We based on these results and concluded that this paper is the first to report the effectiveness of h-CaO and s-CaO for bio-oil heterogeneously catalyzed ethanolysis for sustainable biodiesel production in developing countries.

This work presents a methodological proposal for acquisition of biometric data through telemetry basing its development on a research-action and a case study. Nowadays, the qualified professionals of physical evaluation have to use specific devices to obtain biometric signals and data. These devices in the most of the time are high cost and difficult to use and handling. Therefore, the methodological proposal was elaborate in order to develop, conceptually, a bio telemetric device which could acquire the desirable biometric signals: oxymetry, biometrics, corporal temperature and pedometry which are essential for the area of physical evaluation. It was researched the existent biometrics sensors, the possible ways for the remote transmission of signals and the computer systems available so that the acquisition of data could be possible. This methodological proposal of remote acquisition of biometrical signals is structured in four modules: Acquisitor of biometrics data; Converser and transmitter of biometric signals; Receiver and Processor of biometrics signals and Generator of Interpretative Graphs. The modules aim the obtention of interpretative graphics of human biometric signals. In order to validate this proposal a functional prototype was developed and it is presented in the development of this work.

A theoretical and experimental study of electroporation (EP) of red blood cells (RBCs) was presented in this paper. With additional strain energy, an energy-based model of an electropore induced on a RBC's membrane at different electric fields was proposed to predict the critical EP electric field strength. In addition, EP experiments with red blood cells at single-cell level was carried out on a micro EP chip. The measured critical EP electric field strengths are in agreement with the numerical predictions. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper proposes the students' learning assessment by using fuzzy logic. The framework of practical learning system for computer discipline is also presented to explain a conceptual design of an intelligent tutorial system. The proposed framework composes of six components including interface module, domain knowledge, inference engine, student module, mentor module and pedagogical module. The inference engine performed students' group classification form on-line pre-test examination before starting the practical worksheet application. Two input parameters consisting of percentage of score and time were established as inputs for membership functions of fuzzy logic system. The twenty-five fuzzy rules were created for the proposed method by experts. The defuzzification of output membership functions, including good, fair and improve were performed by using the centroid method. In this paper, 26 students were tested in order to compare the students' learning performance, assessed by fuzzy logic and t-score method. The results revealed that the proposed method was a flexible process to classify students' learning group based on the objectives of subject and the real time performance comparing with t-score method.

Visual cue in the top-down attention mechanism was investigated that it could effectively improve the target cognition reaction quality. Recent brain studies showed that the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) played an important role to keep the task-relevant information and task rule during tasks. In this study, we focused on the neural network of attention and the function of rDLPFC, whether it modulates the attention during visual and auditory divided spatial and temporal attention. We used a top-down attention paradigm in which a visual cue directs the attention of participants to both visual and auditory target stimulus in a spatial (attention was directed to unilateral target distinctly) in VAS (visual auditory spatial) task and a temporal (attention was directed to a time point alternatively although humans are difficult to pay attention to a time point clearly) in VAT (visual auditory temporal) attention task. A non-informative cue task was also carried out in VAN (visual auditory neutral) task in order to observe the activation of working memory. Behavioral data showed no significant difference between VAS, VAT and VAN by twos. The parietal and frontal cortices were activated in both the VAS and VAT attention tasks. Furthermore, in the VAS and VAT attention task, it used a bilateral frontal-parietal network to modulate the cognition of visual and auditory target. But in the VAT attention task, right parietal cortex was not activated as well as the VAS task. The activation of DLPFC shows stronger in the spatial attention task than the temporal task, and in a non-informative cue task, the activation of DLPFC is the lowest in the three tasks.

In this paper, we investigate the position control of spherical ultrasonic motor (SUSM). The generated torque of SUSM is influenced by the phase difference and the driving frequency of applied AC voltages. Therefore, the control strategy is classified into three types: (a) variable phase and fixed frequency, (b) fixed phase and variable frequency, and (c) variable phase and frequency. We formulate the position control rules for SUSM based on the above three types of control variables, and investigate the performances experimentally.
