This paper introduces an approach to deal with IMS (Intelligent Manufacturing System) models, in order to help the development of Decision Support systems, Simulators and Performance Evaluators. The complexity of such systems is growing continuously requiring knowledge and information exchange between different manufacturing functions with more and more efficiency. This paper explores some potentialities of soft computing approaches and intelligent agent-oriented design including artificial neural networks, fuzzy systems, and evolutionary computation. The rationale is in order to support decision making processes performed by the autonomous and co-operative units of an IMS.

Ultra-precision raster milling is one of the most significant techniques for the fabrication of high precision components with the surface roughness less than 10nm and form errors less than 0.2 um, without the need for any subsequent polishing. However, no matter how well a machine may be designed. there is a limit to the accuracy that can be achieved. This paper studies the machining errors caused by the diamond tool and the axis motions using Freeform 705G. With an empirical approach, the error sources are separated based on their effects on the surface finish. The main source leading to poor surface finish is identified. This establishes a basis for subsequent error compensation and equipment maintenance.

During the history of science of computational intelligence, many evolutionary algorithms approaches were proposed having more or less success in solving various optimization problems. In this context, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a bio-inspired optimization mechanism based on the metaphor of social behaviour of birds flocking and fish schooling in search for food. Inspired by the classical PSO method and quantum mechanics theories, this work presents a quantum-behaved PSO (QPSO) approach using Gaussian probability distribution function (G-QPSO). Numerical simulations based on optimized proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control of an automatic regulator voltage system for nominal system parameters and step reference voltage input demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of G-QPSO approach. Simulation results of G-QPSO to determine the PID parameters are compared with the classical PSO and QPSO.

This paper described developing a practical car search system using fuzzy theory. This system aims at supporting car purchasing for a person which is no good with machines as if they ask casually someone who knows more about cars. Unspecific conditions are expressed by the fuzzy set, and the level matching the conditions are expressed by the grade values. To keep more practical use, a GUI form which only selected some menus was developed. In conclusion, it reviews and observes this study, showing its effectiveness, remaining issues, and measures for the issues.

Recommendation accuracy is especially important in mobile e-commerce environments due to the limited screen size of mobile devices and relatively expensive connection costs. Mobile content tends to be fashionable and are geared for young users. This paper presents a novel method of building a more accurate recommender system for mobile content in a mobile ecommerce environment. The method is based on collaborative filtering, and models content diffusion and user preference transition and incorporates them in constructing pseudo ratings from implicit feedback data. In a variety of experiments, recommender systems based on the method showed significantly better recommendation accuracy than a pure collaborative filtering-based recommender system.

The effect of the plasma electrode bias voltage in the negative ion sources is modeled and investigated with one‐dimensional plasma simulation. A particle‐in‐cell (PIC) method is applied to simulate the motion of charged particles in their self‐consistent electric field. In the simulation, the electron current density is fixed to produce the bias voltage. The tendency of current‐voltage characteristics obtained in the simulation show agreement with the one obtained from a simple probe theory. In addition, the H− ion density peak appears at the bias voltage close to the plasma potential as observed in the experiment. The physical mechanism of this peak H− ion density is discussed.

Ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators are expected as artificial muscles for bio-mimetic soft robots. The IPMC gel first bends quickly and then bends back slowly when a constant voltage is applied to the sample. The latter phenomenon, referred to as the stress relaxation, can be modeled by electrostress diffusion coupling theory. The theory can predict the behavior of the actuator for the different species of counterions. In order to describe the actuator dynamics as a system with inputs and outputs, this paper proposes a linear state space model based on the electrostress diffusion coupling theory. The model consists of the three systems, the electrical, the electro-mechanical, and the mechanicalsystems. The results of the simulation and the experiment demonstrate the validity of the model.

A general adaptive robust nonlinear motion controller combined with disturbance observer (DOB) for positioning control of a nonlinear single-input-single-output (SISO) mechanical system is proposed. Theoretical performance such as transient performance, ultimate tracking error bound and mean square tracking error bound are analyzed rigorously, and simulation results are provided to support the theoretical results.
