Circular vibration milling (CVM) has been proven capable of producing better surface finishes on difficult to cut materials. However, CVM process is far slower than conventional milling process. In circular vibration planing (CVP) process, the cutting tool is clamped without rotation and fed at a speed comparable to the feed speed of conventional milling. By superimposing circular vibration motion, necessary cutting speed could be achieved keeping the feed speed at realistic values. Inconel 718 was machined by CVM, CVP and conventional milling. It was observed that CVP could reduce tool wear and hence produce better surface finishes than conventional milling.

This paper deals with the problem of finding the pole(s) in Orthonormal Basis Functions (OBF) models. In fact, any stable system can be exactly represented by an infinite orthonormal functions series, assuming that the basis used in such representation is complete. However, in practice a truncated basis functions expansion is used. For certain basis choice and fixed number of functions, there is a pole or set of poles that minimizes the truncation error. The problem is then to find such set. Therefore, the present paper is focused on the problem of finding the basis functions poles when more than one dynamic is involved, for instance, in SISO Generalized Orthonormal Basis Functions (GOBF) models or MIMO Laguerre, Kautz and/or GOBF models. It is proposed and analyzed here the use of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for such problem. Simulation results presented shows the validity of the proposed method.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based stochastic optimization technique, originally developed by Eberhart and Kennedy, inspired by simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. In PSO, the system (swarm) is initialized with a population of random solutions (particles) and searches for optima using cognitive and social factors by updating generations. PSO has been successfully applied to a wide range of applications, mainly in solving continuous nonlinear optimization problems. Based on the PSO and chaos theories, this paper discusses the use of a chaotic PSO approach hybridized with an implicit filtering (IF) technique to optimize performance of economic dispatch problems. The chaotic PSO with chaos sequences is the global optimizer and the IF is used to fine-tune the chaotic PSO run in sequential manner. The hybrid methodology is validated for a test system consisting of 13 thermal units whose incremental fuel cost function takes into account the valve-point loading effects.

Service-Learning (S-L) has been shown to be effective on a large number of cognitive and affective measures for college students. S-L is a pedagogy in which student learning objectives and real community needs are met in a credit-bearing course. In engineering the integration of S-L into any courses, much less existing core courses in a curriculum does not match the penetration in other disciplines. The mechanical engineering (ME) Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell has incorporated S-L projects into core courses so that every student has at least one required core course every semester with a S-L project that is either a required or elective part of the course. During 2005-06 fourteen core ME courses had S-L projects, and a required engineering ethics course also had S-L in addition to four elective courses. Nine of twelve ME faculty members incorporated S-L in those courses (more recently 12 of 13), in addition to 3 faculty outside the department teaching courses for ME students. This initiative is part of a college-wide effort to have all five undergraduate programs have S-L integrated into the core curriculum (ECE, ChE, CE, and Plastics E). Courses and projects included, for examples, introduction to engineering for first year students (common to students in all five programs) who designed and built educational displays for the local national historic park, sophomore design lab with device development for student relatives or friends with disabilities, a dynamics course with safety analysis of many local playgrounds, a convective process course with the design of a water supply system for a village in a developing country, a statics course with a water tower design for another village (with the later two systems actually constructed in the villages the college has "adopted"), a machine elements course with four different S-L miniprojects, a ME laboratory course with the design of a measurement system to test local playground surface hardness, a

We develop a sequential sampling procedure for solving a class of stochastic programs. A sequence of feasible solutions, with at least one optimal limit point, is given as input to our procedure. Our procedure estimates the optimality gap of a candidate solution from this sequence, and if that point estimate is sufficiently small then we stop. Otherwise, we repeat with the next candidate solution from the sequence with a larger sample size. We provide conditions under which this procedure: (i) terminates with probability one and (ii) terminates with a solution which has a small optimality gap with a prespecified probability.

The goal of this special session is to explore what engineering education might be like if it were done from a feminist perspective, and how this new vision might influence the profession and society. Feminist perspectives are understood broadly to recognize the connectedness of all forms of social injustice. Thus feminist visions of engineering might address a broad set of concerns such as militarism, racism, and global economic inequality as well as sexism and heterosexism. Outcomes include concrete ideas for future research and institutional transformation, collaboration and mutual support of one another's efforts.

This paper discusses the adaptive control for the uncertain discrete time linear systems preceded with hysteresis and disturbances. The contribution of the paper is the fusion of the hysteresis model with the adaptive control techniques without constructing the inverse hysteresis nonlinearity. The proposed scheme eliminates the traditional overparameterization by only adapting the parameters (which are generated from the parameters of the linear system and the density function of the hysteresis) directly needed in the formulation of the sliding mode controller. The stability in the sense that all signals in the loop remain bounded can be guaranteed. Furthermore, if the disturbance and reference signal are slow varying with respect to the sampling frequency, the output tracking error can be controlled to be as small as required by choosing the design parameters. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. © 2007 IEEE.

In this paper, analysis of outcoupling efficiency improvement and optical characteristics of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) attached with square-based microlens arrays are presented. A square-based microlens array, having a base length of 35.4 μm and a fill factor of 89.6%, increases the luminous current efficiency and outcoupling efficiency of the OLED device by 42% and 47%, respectively. Optical properties of the OLED device, such as optical emitting spectrum and CIE coordinate, have also been investigated when attached with microlens arrays having different fill factors.
