In order to improve equipment efficiency in terms of performance, energy consumption and degradation for example, the industry has increased the use of control systems as the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) to a new baseline. This structure has few parameters to adjust and it is easy to implement practically. However, there are some requirements often included on multivariable systems that cannot be solved concurrently by classical methods. To solve this problem, the current paper approaches the application of Multiobjective Differential Evolution (MODE), Multiobjective Harmony Search (MOHS) and Multiobjective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) on multivariable PID controllers tuning. Moreover, an improved version of MOPSO (I-MOPSO) is proposed and its performance is compared with the other algorithms. In order to validate it under control systems, the optimization technique is applied on a two degree of freedom robotic manipulator. Finally, a detailed analysis is made on the I-MOPSO achievements. © 2014 IEEE.

Blockchain technology is being recognized as a significant solution to technical issues across various industries, including healthcare. In the healthcare sector, Blockchain has the potential to revolutionize processes such as transferring patient medical records, managing the medicine supply chain, and aiding healthcare researchers in unlocking genetic code. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a developed country actively exploring blockchain technology to enhance its healthcare sector. Despite efforts to improve healthcare in the UAE, integrating new technologies has been limited. The focus has primarily been on improving equipment and procedures rather than adopting innovative solutions. The growing population and increasing emphasis on medical tourism have also amplified the demand for advanced healthcare services. Therefore, immediate action is required to initiate significant developments in the healthcare sector. This research aims to highlight the importance and role of blockchain technology, specifically in the UAE healthcare sector. It seeks to improve the competence and privacy of healthcare data systems while addressing concerns related to centralization. The study presents recent findings concerning the initiatives and vision of the UAE government to establish a globally outstanding healthcare sector. It defines blockchain technology and emphasizes its positive impact on enhancing healthcare data systems. Furthermore, the research showcases various applications of blockchain technology that can be implemented in the healthcare sector. By demonstrating blockchain technology's benefits and potential applications, this research endeavors to encourage the strategic adoption of blockchain solutions in the healthcare sector. With the adoption of damage tolerance design principle, the health monitoring system has become an integral part of the engineering structure in operation. For the system to work, damage indicator that describes the structural integrity level should be established and monitored. Damage indicator is usually derived from structural responses. Many quantities have been proposed for damage indicator. Some popular damage indicators are natural frequency, mode shape, curvature, strain energy, and t-, F-, and z-statistics. In this paper, we propose a new damage indicator derived from the theory of the strength of materials. We evaluate the proposal for a case involving damage on a simply-supported beam. The required data are established numerically by the finite element method for structure in healthy and damaged conditions. The results suggest that the current proposal is more sensitive to damage than the natural frequency. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Omnidirectional vision systems have been used for mobile robots localization and navigation, taking advantage of a panoramic view for detecting objects. This paper presents a pipelined hardware architecture for image processing using a low cost omnidirectional vision system, which was calibrated using a three-order polynomial interpolation. An Altera Cyclone II FPGA device was used for implementing the hardware architectures, which have been described in both VHDL and Verilog hardware description languages. The entire system is composed of a spherical mirror, an 800x480 pixels camera connected to the FPGA, a spatial convolution filter for edge enhancement, a hardware architecture for estimating the distance of real objects and a touch screen display as user interface. Synthesis results point out that the image processing algorithms are effectively implemented in hardware whereas test results demonstrate that the proposed hardware architectures in FPGAs are suitable for mobile robot applications in which the distance among objects or other robots must be computed. Execution time results demonstrate that the proposed hardware architecture achieves a speed-up factor of 61 in comparison with a desktop software solution based on a xPC Target real time operating system. © 2011 ACM.

The problems related with urban fires brings destruction, casualties and economic issues to the country. On aiming to decrease the risk specially on populous areas, the development of classification and/or forecasting systems are needed to detect these events. This paper presents a new case of study related with fire incidents to create a predictor with a machine learning technique allied with an optimization technique. Differential evolution (DE) is a population-based stochastic search evolutionary algorithm applied to nonlinear, nondifferentiable, and continuous space functions. It has shown good performance on a wide range of benchmark problems as well as many real-world applications. Extreme Gradient boosting machine (XGBoost) is an efficient boosting technique that is getting a lot of attention because of its success on winning several of competitions hosted by the site Kaggle. However, XGBoost's hyper-parameters tuning process demands a high effort and computational time, hence the application of an optimization technique as DE. In this context, DE showed to be an efficient and robust optimization tool, presenting good and stable results on the adopted tests. Along with the XGBoost hyper-parameter tuning optimized approach, this paper presents a novel database from service times of real fire incidents of the years 2013 and 2014 that were gathered with the Fire Department of the state of Paraná on the city of Curitiba in Brazil (FDPRC). The regression results could contribute with FDPRC, to speed up the location reckoning process of the fire incidents, improving the answering time of the calling. Cell-culture techniques are widely used for in-vitro drug screening and biochemical analyses. The classical models for dissociating cell monolayers into single-cell suspensions include enzymatic techniques (e.g., trypsinization). All available enzymatic and non-enzymatic techniques require long treatment duration, typically on the order of minutes (5-10 min). Here, we report a novel, ultrafast, and high-throughput technique, using acoustofluidics, that enables the detachment of adhered cells into suspensions within seconds, while maintaining cellular viability similar to that of the trypsinization method. In our technique, only the adhered cells experience the acoustic waves, minimizing any detrimental effects of the dissociating agent on the detached cells. © 2020 CBMS-0001

Nonprofit organizations have specific and complex characteristics that influence their performance measurement and differentiate it from others business models. So, it is important to know what are the factors, as motivations, barriers, and drivers, that influence the design of a performance measurement system to develop a complete system with all organizational issues, as social aspects, accountability, and legitimacy. A systematic literature review was previously performed and a set of factors that influence the design of performance measurement system for nonprofit organizations were identified. This paper presents a case study conducted in a Fire Department in the United States with the purpose investigate the set of factors in the practice. The data were collected using four techniques: interviews, documents and archival records, and observation. The findings show that the influence of the factors can vary depending on the type of organization and the paper indicates some reasons for that. Therefore, understanding the organization and these factors is a challenge for the performance measurement area to provide tools and frameworks that contribute to the organizational management and research area advance.

Proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) controllers have been widely adopted for industrial applications. However, these controllers are not very efficient for non-linear systems. Artificial neural networks (ANN) based on the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) have great potential to replace PID controllers due to their polynomial structure, allowing complex non-linear systems to be controlled. This article introduces the integration of four MLPs as alternatives to a traditional PID controller. These MLPs were trained through four bioinspired algorithms tailored for following tasks in mobile robots. The bioinspired algorithms employed for MLP network training include Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO), Month-Flame Optimization (MFO), and Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (AHA). A comparative analysis was conducted between these MLPs and a classic PID controller, focusing on parameters such as overshoot (OS), settling time (ST), and steady-state error for different simulated scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.
