Purpose - The relationship between knowledge management (KM) and research and development (R&D) management is intrinsically close. However, little attention has been paid to the development and implementation of KM systems for R&D organizations. The main objective of this current research is, from the perspective of evolutionary ecology, to suggest a framework of system design to link KM and R&D management. Design/methodology/approach - The chronological profile of R&D management systems over the past few decades is reviewed and the salient features of respective generations are identified. Then, the list of requirements for KM systems is suggested for each generation. Findings - Finds that these requirements constitute crucial variables for the design of KM systems and, as a whole, provide the building-blocks for integrating R&D management and KM. Originality/value - The proposed architecture is considered as a starting-point and serves as a milestone in implementing KMS in accordance with the R&D characteristics of a particular firm.

Injection Molding (IM) is considered to be the most important process for mass-producing plastic products. One of the biggest challenges facing injection molders is to determine the best settings for the controllable process variables (CPVs). Selecting the proper settings is crucial because the behavior of the polymeric material during shaping is highly influenced by the process variables. The difficulty of optimizing an IM process is that the performance measures (PMs), such as surface quality or cycle time that characterize the adequacy of the part for its intended purpose usually show conflicting behavior. Furthermore, in actual molding, the CPVs will vary over some range during molding. This inconsistency of the process variables will lead to variability in the PMs. In high precision manufacturing, in particular for micro and nano scale components and devices, this variability needs to be minimized, and if possible eliminated. Thus, the variability in the PMs needs to be included in the optimization problem. The aim of this work is to demonstrate a method based on CAE, statistical testing, artificial neural networks (ANNs), and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to find the optimal compromises between multiple PMs and their variability to prescribe the values for the CPVs in IM. We present an example where the optimization is carried out in two phases. Phase one uses the PMs that are significantly affected by the injection gate location in order to prescribe two possible injection gates. Phase two of the optimization uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to find a PM-based efficient frontier for each injection gate considering process variability. These two efficient frontiers are then compared to select the best location. Other possible applications are discussed.

Adsorption processes between silica cluster and poly-(p-phenylene pyromellitimide) substrate are investigated by the atomistic calculations combining with the semi-empirical molecular orbital method and the algorisms that can find minimum energy paths of chemical bonding process. Especially, the activation and sorption energies in the reactions are estimated from the optimal reaction path. The Silica thin film-aromatic Polyimide substrate interface is modeled by a silica cluster and polyimide surface which is layered molecular chains with periodic boundary conditions. Conjugate gradient and Quick-Min methods are used to determine atomistic configurations of the system at local minimum and to evaluate physisorption energy. The dimer and the nudged elastic band (NEB) methods, which use only first derivatives of the potential energy, are used in order to search minimum energy paths on the potential energy landscape. The dimer method is started from local minimum on the potential energy landscape and used to search the transition and final states of the system. The NEB method is then carried out to calculate precise path by using final state obtained by the dimer method. From the simulations, we find that the chemical bonding occurs between a silica cluster and polyimide substrate surface, and the sorption energy defined by the sum of physisorption and chemisorption energy are evaluated. Moreover, we discuss the interfacial strength of silica-polyimide substrate using the optimal minimum energy paths.

In a core disruptive accident (CDA) of a Fast Breeder Reactor, the post accident heat removal (PAHR) is crucial for the accident mitigation. The molten core material should be solidified in the sodium coolant in the reactor vessel. In the present experiment, molten material is injected into water to experimentally obtain fragments and the visualized information of the fragmentation. The distributed particle behaviour of the molten material jet is observed with high-speed video camera. The distributions of the fragmented droplet diameter from the molten material jet are evaluated by correcting the solidified particles. The experimental results of the mean fragmented droplet diameter are compared with the existing theories. Consequently, the fragmented droplet diameter is close to the value estimated based on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Once the particle diameter of the fragmented molten,material could be known from a hydrodynamic model, it becomes possible to estimate the mass ratio of the molten particle to the total injected mass by combining an appropriate heat transfer model The mass ratio of the molten fragment to total mass of the melted mixed oxide fuel in sodium coolant estimated in the present study is very small. The result means that most of the molten mixed oxide fuel material injected into the sodium coolant can be cooled down under the solidified temperature, if the amount of the coolant is sufficient.
