Black ice danger area estimation and active speed control research by utilizing road condition sensor

This study was performed to verify the feasibility of using a black ice danger area estimation function based on the wetness data acquired by a piezoelectric based RCS (Road Condition Sensor) through real road tests under each environment and real vehicle conditions. The techniques and system implementation are considered for the prevention of accidents caused by black ice, which primarily causes critical issues in winter every year. System detects the value of wetness on the road during (or right after) rain and snow using an RCS then can estimate the possibility of the presence of black ice on the forward path at low temperatures by combining with those obtained using the ambient temperature sensor and GIS (GPS and map). Accident avoidance and damage minimization effect is expected by securing safe driving conditions through active speed control. © ICROS 2021.

Proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) controllers have been widely adopted for industrial applications. However, these controllers are not very efficient for non-linear systems. Artificial neural networks (ANN) based on the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) have great potential to replace the PID controllers due to their polynomial structure, allowing complex non-linear systems to be controlled. This work presents a hardware architecture of a GMDH network applied to speed control of a mobile robot platform. The proposed GMDH controller was implemented using a 16-bit floating-point arithmetic representation and was mapped on a Zynq7020 device. A hardware-in-the-loop based on the Universal Direct Memory Access methodology was developed to validate the proposed circuits, allowing for performance comparisons between a classical PID and the GMDH controllers for different simulated scenarios.

Selective Power Control in Grid-Connected AC Microgrids

The increasing penetration of nonlinear loads (NLLs) and distributed energy resources (DERs) in low-voltage grids poses challenges to power quality and grid hosting capacity (GHC). This article proposes a centralized multimode selective power control strategy for grid-connected ac microgrids (MGs) that does not require prior knowledge of MG parameters. The strategy enhances GHC and power quality across multiple MG nodes through coordinated control in two nonsimultaneous modes. In the centralized mode, a generalized power-based control algorithm enables selective harmonic/distortion power dispatch. This formulation improves disturbance rejection and accuracy in point of common coupling (PCC) power tracking. For the first time, feedback, feedforward, and disturbance decoupling actions are applied to distortion/harmonic power in MGs. In the decentralized mode, harmonic current compensation (HCC) is achieved without communication links, reducing data traffic via a selective voltage-detection-based approach. The proposed strategy enables (i) resistive load synthesis at the PCC to damp upstream grid resonances, (ii) sinusoidal current synthesis (SCS) for current quality enhancement and compliance with standards, and (iii) HCC based on voltage measurements to improve voltage quality at internal nodes. Comprehensive simulations evaluate reference tracking, disturbance rejection, grid short-circuit level effects, and mode transitions. Results show that in decentralized mode, PCC voltage THD improved from 10.65% to 1.09% under weak grids. In centralized mode, with SCS up to the 11th harmonic, PCC current THD was reduced from 61.18% to 3.42% under stiff grids. Experimental results confirm the feasibility of implementation in real MGs.

In this work, an optical fiber sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is proposed for simultaneous measurement of relative humidity (RH) and temperature, which is constructed by connecting two segments of thin-core fibers (TCFs) using a multimode fiber (MMF). The gold film was coated on TCFs to excite the SPR effect. One was further coated with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to sense RH (Channel I), and the other was coated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to sense temperature (Channel II). The detection was performed via the resonance wavelength shift induced by the refractive index (RI) change of CMC and PDMS in relation to RH variation and temperature variation, respectively. The incorporation of gold nanoparticles enhances the sensitivity of the SPR sensor and shifts the resonance wavelengths, allowing for more outstanding demarcation of the SPR dip between the two portions inside the equivalent spectrum. Experimental results show that the sensor has an RH sensitivity of −1.053 nm/%RH and a temperature sensitivity of −2.306 nm/◦C. Moreover, the cross-sensitivity issue present in RH and temperature measurements was resolved by introducing a dual-wavelength matrix method. The proposed sensor offers high sensitivity, a simple structure, and ease of manufacturing, making it broadly applicable in fields such as food safety, biotechnology, and manufacturing. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group. The development of interoperability is more and more an essential task for all kinds of organizations. It needs to be measured, verified, and continuously improved. With the advent of the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, Digital Transformation, as well as all technologies it brings, such as big data, cloud computing, and mobile applications, this subject become quite ordinary and necessary, not only in a manufacturing scenario but also in a business process. As crucial benefits, it can bring possible gains for developers and users, also reduce the efforts to communicate multiple and different platforms. Like all new implementations, there are significant challenges that have to be overcome to allow satisfactory results. In this paper, after a systematic literature review to better understand the technologies and this new situation, we conduct a study involving a case in a business process, presenting some actions that can be executed and technologies that can be implemented to reach a well interoperable environment. For instance, to analyze the interoperability maturity level and to adopt ontologies as an alternative to integrate heterogeneous systems. Finally, in the last part of the paper, we give conclusions and perspectives for futures works. © 2021 The authors and IOS Press.

A comparison of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller tuning for a 2x2 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) water treatment plant model is presented. The PID tuning procedures are based on Multi-Objective Grey Wolf Optimizer (MOGWO) and Multi-Objective Grouped Grey Wolf Optimizer (MOGGWO) are performed under two different initial conditions. The tuning procedure is structured as a multi-objective optimization problem with four objective functions, the integral time-squared error is minimized in each output response, and the integral of the control actions is minimized in each input. MOGWO is a metaheuristic based on the hunting behavior of grey wolves, following the hierarchy and leadership procedures that these animals have, while the proposed MOGGWO is a new version proposed in this study with two different groups with different functionalities. The performance was analyzed by 50 runs based on statistical metrics. MOGGWO can find more local minima since its Pareto front is more dispersed than that found by MOGWO.

This study delves into the utilization of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for generating subject-specific time series sensor data, offering an innovative alternative to traditional metamodel-based simulations. We undertake an in-depth analysis of DoppelGANger, a prominent GAN variant for time series data and metadata generation, evaluating its efficiency and efficacy. The sensor data for this investigation was sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which served as the foundational training set. We scrutinized the synthesized sensor data corresponding to various physical attributes, focusing on the temporal and multi-dimensional statistical properties. Our empirical findings underscore the potential of GANs to adeptly capture the time-dependent correlations and the intricate statistical characteristics inherent in multi-dimensional data. This insight into GANs' capabilities is a crucial step towards more sophisticated synthetic data generation, with significant implications for future applications in wearable technology and personalized health monitoring systems.

Proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) controllers have been widely adopted for industrial applications. However, these controllers are not very efficient for non-linear systems. Artificial neural networks (ANN) based on the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) have great potential to replace PID controllers due to their polynomial structure, allowing complex non-linear systems to be controlled. This article introduces the integration of four MLPs as alternatives to a traditional PID controller. These MLPs were trained through four bioinspired algorithms tailored for following tasks in mobile robots. The bioinspired algorithms employed for MLP network training include Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO), Month-Flame Optimization (MFO), and Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (AHA). A comparative analysis was conducted between these MLPs and a classic PID controller, focusing on parameters such as overshoot (OS), settling time (ST), and steady-state error for different simulated scenarios.

Medical wastes bring probable hazards and public risks if not handled correctly, especially during the covid-19 pandemic. Waste management costs are rising due to continues devastation of covid-19 virus. Increased care and handling processes have been implemented to avoid further spreading the infection while ensuring the proper disposal. Given this, medical waste related to covid-19, including other wastes generated by medical facilities, requires delicate integration into the waste management process thru a reverse logistics network for cost-efficient collection, processing, and transport style. Using AMPL software as solving tool, this paper was designed to utilize a mixed-integer linear programming model of a reverse logistics network to improve medical waste management by identifying the total minimum cost of the waste disposal cycle from Waste generating facilities, treatment facilities, and to the disposal factory. © 2022 ACM.

Foot amputation can happen due to several factors and cause severe changes in the individual's gait pattern, reduces mobility and generates injuries. Over the past two decades, researchers have dedicated efforts to develop transtibial pros-theses capable of reproducing healthy foot movement to help the amputee rehabilitation process. This work presents the digital prototype, dynamic modeling and preliminary control of an active ankle-foot prosthesis. The powertrain of the devices is composed of a EC 60 flat 200 W motor coupled to a CPL-20A-50-2 51:1 harmonic drive to generate active torque for the user. Results indicate that the projected prosthesis is promising for the proposed function, with 1.633 kg, a height of 168.57 mm and capable of generating up to 1.02 N.m/kg of torque and 5.39 rad/s of angular velocity, considering a time span of 1 second for the gait cycle on level ground. © 2022 IEEE.
