Understanding how neural dynamics shape cognitive experiences remains a central challenge in neuroscience and psychiatry. Here, we present a novel framework leveraging state-to-output controllability from dynamical systems theory to model the interplay between cognitive perturbations, neural activity, and subjective experience. We demonstrate that large-scale fMRI signals are constrained to low-dimensional manifolds, where affective and cognitive states are naturally organized. Furthermore, we provide a theoretically robust method to estimate the controllability Gramian from steady-state neural responses, offering a direct measure of the energy required to steer cognitive outcomes. In five healthy participants viewing 2,185 emotionally evocative short videos, our analyses reveal a strong alignment between neural activations and affective ratings, with an average correlation of r ≈ 0.7. In a clinical cohort of 255 patients with major depressive disorder, biweekly Hamilton Rating Scale trajectories over 11 weeks significantly mapped onto these manifolds, explaining approximately 20% more variance than chance (p −10, numerically better than chance in 93% reaching statistical significance in one-third of subjects). Our work bridges dynamical systems theory and clinical neuroscience, providing a principled approach to optimize mental health treatments by targeting the most efficient neural pathways for cognitive change. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

In this paper, we assess the benefits of risk pooling in the service parts logistics systems. We formulate a special case of the Network Design Inventory Problem (NDIP) and define conditions for which complete centralization and complete decentralization are optimal. Computational results show that the range of cost parameter values within which partial decentralization is optimal is very small. As a result, in most cases the optimal solution is either close to complete decentralization or close to complete centralization. Finally, we develop an algorithm that evaluates a small set of solutions that form an efficient frontier over the rest of the feasible solutions.

The use of optimization techniques has become integral to the design and analysis of most industrial and socio-economic systems. Great strides have been made recently in the solution of large-scale problems arising in such areas as production planning, airline scheduling, government regulation, and engineering design, to name a few. Analysts have found, however, that standard mathematical programming models are often inadequate in these situations because more than a single objective function and a single decision maker are involved. Multiple objective programming deals with the extension of optimization techniques to account for several objective functions, while game theory deals with the inter-personal dynamics surrounding conflict. Bilevel programming, the focus of this book, is in a narrow sense the combination of the two. It addresses the problern in which two decision makers, each with their individual objectives, act and react in a noncooperative, sequential manner. The actions of one affect the choices and payoffs available to the other but neither player can completely dominate the other in the traditional sense.

Organizations are influenced by external demands which can be represented by changes on the markets organizations are part of. Companies are operating on a new context, where the importance of sustainability has been highlighted by events such as environmental problems, social responsibility issues and quality assurance of products and services. Those aspects are represented by the areas of the Triple Bottom-Line (3BL), which treat organizations operational performance on economic, environmental and social aspects. However, organizations are still trying to develop new performance measurement systems, which relate to the 3BL and that can be used for sustainable performance assessment and benchmarking. In order to address this need, this research aims to develop a process that enables standards and guidelines to be used as tools for the establishment of a performance measurement system which can address the needs of integrated management on behalf of sustainability aspects. The method used on the development of this article is based on concepts of the Process Approach methodology from Cambridge University, as well as Business Process Management Notation to represent processes for performance assessment. Those processes were built with a high emphasis on Performance Assessment frameworks and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) theories. The processes generated have been applied in a project of innovation in sustainable management, in which its application enabled to work with requirements from various standards and guidelines in a practical context, through the usage of indicators and performance measurement. Exemplifying the application of this process, the article will aim to clarify the usage of indicators based on standards and guidelines as a tool for sustainability assessment, through an integrated management of an organization set of standards and guidelines.

Industry 4.0 is creating a radically more dynamic work environment, which calls for considerable changes in the role of industry professionals. As industries need to respond to evolving trends quickly, as well professionals need to be able to work and constantly learning in this new work environment. Besides, due to the continuous advances in technology and the adoption of these technologies in the industries processes, the level of complexity in the workplace is increasing, which results in the need for a new professional role. However, the main challenge is how to prepare and qualify these professionals to acquire these competences. In order to provide a better understanding of the new professional role and their relationship with the industry 4.0 working environment, this paper introduces an ontology for Competence Management in the Fourth industrial Revolution. Considering the recent scientific and business developments for preparing the industries and workers for this new working era, competences and skills needed for professionals in industry 4.0 were reviewed, as well as challenges and opportunities. Based on a systematic literature review in scientific sources and grey literature, this work identified what technologies are being adopted and what the professional competences are for working in this working environment. Within unmanned aerial vehicles on-going research topics, automatic target recognition is acquiring relevance. This is due to the easiness with which it is possible to acquire such devices. In order to do this, signal processing and classification techniques could be adopted. Also, in order to improve the classification ratio, optimization techniques could be used. This subject is object of study for many researchers, but the authors worry about the lack of information while using single-objective optimization techniques. The proposed work comprises the application of multi-objective optimization design in order to create an automatic target recognition system to discriminate different types of unmanned aerial vehicles. In order to accomplish this, a K-band radar system is used to send and receive electromagnetic signals, which are then processed with feature extraction techniques, and finally, applied on an artificial neural network system. In order to improve the system's classification ratio, the classifier is defined as a multi-objective problem, and evolutionary multi-objective optimization techniques are applied. Finally, in order to select the best possible trade-off, the level diagrams multi-criteria decision making methodology is used to compare different solutions. © 2017

The humans have the natural ability of following objects with the head and eyes and identify the relationship between those objects. This daily activity represents a challenge for computer vision systems. The procedure to identify the relationship between human eye gaze and the trackable objects is complex and demands several details. In this current paper we proposed a review of the main gazing following methods, identified the respective performance of them and also proposed an AI based method to estimate the gaze from 2D images based on head pose estimation. The main important details to be recovered from images are scene depth, head position and alignment and ocular rotation. In this approach we perform a track estimation of the gaze direction without the use of the eye position, and also, the face partial occlusion is considered in the analysis. The proposed approach allows low cost in processing with considerable accuracy at low complexity sceneries, because we don’t need to extract the facial features. Gaze tracking is important to evaluate employees’ attention to specific tasks in order to prevent accidents and improve work quality. The presented method improves the current knowing workflow by applying the head pose estimation instead face detection for training and inference. The promisors results are presented and open points are also discussed. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Purpose - The relationship between knowledge management (KM) and research and development (R&D) management is intrinsically close. However, little attention has been paid to the development and implementation of KM systems for R&D organizations. The main objective of this current research is, from the perspective of evolutionary ecology, to suggest a framework of system design to link KM and R&D management. Design/methodology/approach - The chronological profile of R&D management systems over the past few decades is reviewed and the salient features of respective generations are identified. Then, the list of requirements for KM systems is suggested for each generation. Findings - Finds that these requirements constitute crucial variables for the design of KM systems and, as a whole, provide the building-blocks for integrating R&D management and KM. Originality/value - The proposed architecture is considered as a starting-point and serves as a milestone in implementing KMS in accordance with the R&D characteristics of a particular firm.

This paper put forwards a study on the development of navigation and guidance systems for AUV. The restriction in AUV model and estimation on the degree of freedom are recognized as the common problem in AUV's navigation and guidance systems. In this respect a linear model, derived from the linearization using the Jacobian matrix, will be utilized. The so obtained linear model is then estimated by the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF). The implementation of EnKF algorithm on the linear model is carried out by establishing two simulations, namely by generating 300 and 400 ensembles, respectively. The simulations exhibit that the generation of 400 ensembles will give more accurate results in comparison to the generation of 300 ensembles. Furthermore, the best simulation yields the tracking accuracy between the real and simulated trajectories, in translational modes, is in the order of 99.88%, and in rotational modes is in the order of 99.99%. © 2015 IEEE.

This study presents the modelling and simulation of an airport terminal using EnergyPlus software considering the conditions currently faced by the terminal, the cooling demand attended to by chillers and an alternative situation in which a thermal energy storage (TES) tank is employed. The airport terminal was modelled considering real materials, occupation schedules and equipment usage coupled to the climatic file for the specific city where the airport is located. The electrical energy consumption and power demand were adjusted to match the energy and demand bills issued by the local electricity utility company. The air-conditioning system was modelled using performance data obtained from the manufacturers of the equipment. The electricity cost reduction was estimated in US$ 285,000.00 per year, mainly due to an electrical demand reduction of almost 24% at peak hours. The use of different operating strategies such as night operation allowed for a higher coefficient of performance (COP) to be achieved. Considering only the summer months, a general energy reduction of 5% was estimated for the HVAC system plant equipment. Another important benefit of TES is the possibility of increasing the airport's cooling capacity by approximately 25% through the simultaneous use of the HVAC system and cooling storage tank capacities.
