The predicted dramatic increase in demand for IT workers in the next decade suggests an opportunity for IT educators to establish plans to ramp up to meet these needs. The purpose of this paper is to help educators understand factors that are important to IT workers and that can be influenced by the educational process. The work reported here is part of an NSF grant that explored current IT worker experiences and motivations. Data for the study was collected using a forty-four-item questionnaire sent to currently employed IT workers in the Boston area. Stepwise multiple linear regression was used to relate certain outcome variables to attributes and opinions of the respondents as represented by question item responses. Relationships have been discovered that will help educators craft academic programs and identify potentially successful students in IT. For example, the analysis indicates questionnaire items associated with the challenge presented by an IT profession and family educational backgrounds in technical areas are important outcome predictors, while gender and age are less important.

As sustainability/sustainable development (S/SD) is still considered the buzzword in manufacturing environments, particularly after showing up and joining Industry 4.0 (I4.0), S/SD is prescribed to be embraced as one of the major perspectives of actualizing I4.0. Manufacturing, in common, is separated into three primary streams or layers. These layers are represented by machine design (MD), manufacturing processes (MP), and manufacturing systems (MS). All these layers constitute manufacturing enterprises. Although these layers coincide or overlap at one point, there's a psychological link between them. The primary layer is called the core and is dependable for designing machine components. The second layer is called the chosen layer, and it is represented by the manufacturing process with which generation operations will be adopted. The final layer could be a given one and is utilized to demonstrate which manufacturing system can be chosen. This paper aims to discover the S/SD for these layers and the psychological interface between them. In this paper, components of these three layers will be distinguished and analyzed, and the S/SD index of linking these layers through a psychological perspective will be proposed and outlined independently and universally. © IISE Annual Conference and Expo *** rights reserved.

Currently, researchers are concentrating their attention on design for manufacturing, design for assembly, design for cost and design for quality, design for complexity, design for reconfiguration, design for sustainability, and design for X…etc., but they do not mention design manufacturing enterprises system for Industry 4.0. The design manufacturing enterprises system for Industry 4.0 is a systemic approach that simultaneously identifies elements and components for designing manufacturing enterprises for Industry 4.0, taking into consideration the new urgency of adopting Industry 4.0 and the challenges and risk management for implementing Industry 4.0. Wearable sensors have drawn vast interest for their convenience to be worn on body to monitor and track body movements or exercise activities in real ***,wearable electronics rely on powering systems to ***,a self-powered,porous,flexible,hydrophobic and breathable nanofibrous membrane based on electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)nanofiber has been developed as a tactile sensor with low-cost and simple fabrication for human body motion detection and ***,effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes(CNT)and barium titanate(BTO)as additives to the fiber morphology as well as mechanical and dielectric properties of the piezoelectric nanofiber membrane were *** fabricated BTO@PVDF piezoelectric nanogenerator(PENG)exhibits the highβ-phase content and best overall electrical performances,thus selected for the flexible sensing device ***,the nanofibrous membrane demonstrated robust tactile sensing performance that the device exhibits durability over 12,000 loading test cycles,holds a fast response time of 82.7 ms,responds to a wide pressure range of 0-5 bar and shows a high relative sensitivity,especially in the small force range of 11.6 V/bar upon pressure applied perpendicular to the ***,when attached on human body,its unique fibrous and flexible structure offers the tactile sensor to present as a health care monitor in a self-powered manner by translating motions of different movements to electrical signals with various patterns or sequences.

Scheduling in semiconductor wafer fabrication is viewed important due to its effect on both proper utilization of expensive equipment and cycle time. The complex nature of manufacturing processes used in semiconductor manufacturing makes scheduling and other activities such as process and quality control more critical and more interdependent on each other. We investigate the interdependency, interaction, and potentially needed coordination between scheduling and advanced process control decisions. As a first step, we analyze the issue using simple models (single machine settings) both analytically and computationally, and draw insights for more complex and realistic situations.

When using an electric scooter, there is a problem with the electric motor overheating. Temperatures that are too high will damage motor performance and reduce reliability. As a result, heat transfer from electric motors needs to be carefully considered. This study aims to determine the thermal characteristics of an electric motor by varying the rotational speed. The rotational speeds varied were 250 rpm, 500 rpm, and 750 rpm. Using finite element analysis to answer research questions, the software used is Ansys Motor-CAD. The type of electric motor used is a wheel hub motor with a power of 1.5 kW. The findings indicate that the rotating speed influenced the thermal properties of a wheel hub motor. Wheel hub motor components, including the winding, stator, rotor, cover, and axle, exhibit a drop in temperature with increasing rotational speed. The winding is the component that experiences the highest temperature, and the cover is the component that experiences the lowest temperature. The winding loss value is much higher than the stator, magnet, and rotor loss. Compared to other rotational speeds, the winding temperature at 750 rpm rotational speed achieved a stable temperature the quickest, at 519 minutes, while the temperatures at 250 rpm and 500 rpm reached stable temperatures, respectively, at 592.2 and 550.5 minutes. © 2023 IEEE.

The increasing public demand for electric vehicles also impacts the demand for electric motors. The prominent problem electric motors faces are excess heat when operating because it affects the age and performance of the electric motor. Installing fins on the electric motor housing is one way to reduce heat on the electric motor. In this study, a comparison of the six-fin design was carried out, and the effect on the thermal characteristics of the electric motor was examined. Fins are mounted radially and axially. The six types of fin designs studied are radial fins-round, radial fins-square, radial fins-servo, axial fins-round, axial fins-square, and axial fins-servo. The research uses the lumped circuit models method, and the software used is Motor-CAD. The type of electric motor being studied is a brushless permanent magnet machine (BPM) with an internal rotor. The study's findings indicate that the fin's performance in cooling the electric motor depends on its area. The lower temperatures in the axial fins-servo and radial fins-square compared to other fin designs are due to the broader area of the axial fins-servo and radial fins-square compared to the others. Axially mounted fins provide better cooling than radially mounted fins. For example, the winding temperature on the axial fins-servo is 140.54°C, and the winding temperature on the radial fins-square is 140.86°C even though the area of the axial fins-servo is 22.7% smaller than the area of the radial fins-servo. © 2023 IEEE.

The firefly algorithm (FA) is a new population-based metaheuristic bioinspired on the behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. As a population-based algorithm, the FA suffers from large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For reducing execution times we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the FA algorithm that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In addition, this work proposes the application of the opposition-based learning (OBL) approach to the FA algorithm. The respective hardware implementation (HPOFA) was mapped into a Virtex5 FPGA device and numerical experiments using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the FA algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity and avoiding the premature convergence problem. Synthesis results point out that the HPOFA architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2013 IEEE.

This study aims to provide subsidy for construction entrepreneurs in the implementation of a Health and Safety Work (HSW) Management plan based on OSHAS 18001 specifications [1], the guidelines of ILO Brazil (International Labor Organization) and other legislations related to workers health and safety. The method presented here was based on national and international publications about management methods, identifying the requirements of HSW legislation and how can organizations define a schedule to implement its management. As a methodology, explanatory research was used, aiming to develop, explain and modify concepts and ideas, considering more precise problem formulations or researchable hypothesis for further studies and descriptive research, where facts are observed, registered, analyzed, classified and interpreted. The integration of a quality management system, environment, health and safety at work legislation is a reality in Brazil and a global tendency that if applied effectively in companies' daily operations, can result in continuous improvement of entrepreneurial development and satisfaction of the parts interested.

On the side of enhancing the execution of skills, specialists in sports are adopting analysis of kinematics to correct actions of an athlete. By means of technological resources used to measure physical variables and to supply relevant data to trainers, results related to improvements on athletes' performance are being achieved. In this context, this work uses the Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBF-NNs) combined in cascade with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) as a cross-correlation method, likewise Multiobjective Differential Evolution (MODE) and self-adaptive MODE (using JADE - Adaptive Differential Evolution with Optional External Archive - self-adaptation method) for optimization. The RBF-NNs have been applied to predict the swimmers velocity profile being multiple correlation coefficient (R~2) adopted to evaluate the optimization techniques during both estimation and validation stages. A data acquisition system was used to capture the para-swimming athletes' instantaneous velocity data, swimming 25 meters in crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly strokes. Looking at the results achieved, self-adaptive MODE outperforms classical MODE in approach point of view considering all cases studied, finding the best RBF-NN framework to identify the profile of speed in swimming.
