The intake air control system of a gasoline engine is a typical nonlinear system, and included among the adverse fac-tors that always induce poor idle-speed control stability are dead time and disturbances in the intake air control process. In this paper, to improve the responsiveness when idling with regard to disturbances, a mean-value engine model (MVEM) with dead time was constructed as the control object, and the two servo structures of sliding mode control (SMC) were studied for better idle control performance, especially in transient process of speed change. The simulation results confirmed that under the constraint condition of control input, the robustness of idle speed control that is being subjected to torque disturbances and noise disturbances can be greatly improved by use of the servo structure II.

Proteins fold to a specific functional conformation with a densely packed core that controls their stability. Despite their importance, we lack a quantitative explanation for why all protein cores, regardless of their overall fold, possess the same average packing fraction 〈ϕ〉≈0.55. However, important developments in the physics of jamming in particulate systems can shed light on the packing of protein cores. Here, we extend the framework of jamming to describe core packing in collapsed polymers, as well as in all-atom models of folded proteins. First, we show in a spherical bead-spring polymer model (with and without bond-angle constraints) that as the hydrophobic interactions increase relative to thermal fluctuations, a jamming-like transition occurs when the core packing fraction exceeds ϕc with the same power-law scaling behavior for the potential energy Vr, excess contact number ΔN, and characteristic frequency of the vibrational density of states ω* versus Δϕ=ϕ−ϕc as that for jammed particulate systems. Then, we develop an all-atom model for proteins and find that, above ϕc∼0.55, protein cores undergo a jamming-like transition, but with anomalous power-law scaling for Vr, ΔN, and ω* versus Δϕ. The all-atom protein model remains close to the native protein structure during jamming and accurately refolds from partially unfolded states.

With the increasing world demand for seafood and environmental problems in coastal aquaculture, offshore area has been increasingly expected to be utilized for aquaculture. The present study proposed the concept of an offshore aquaculture system with an automated feeding platform. The offshore aquaculture system has fewer effects on the surrounding marine environment through the rapid diffusion of organic wastes than the coastal one. The offshore area then provides clean waters for cultured fish. On the other hand, the offshore aquaculture system is subject to the severe natural condition such as typhoon attack. Actually, in the current aquaculture system, the cultured fish is starved during a few days before and after typhoon attack since the feeding ship is not able to approach the offshore sea cages, which is submerged every time around 10m below the sea surface to escape from high waves and strong currents. The automated feeding system should be therefore developed to enable the cultured fish to grow faster under the severe natural condition. The proposed system consists of several submerged fish cages and a feeding platform, which includes fuel tanks, feed storage silos, and an automated feeding machine. The feeding platform was designed by numerical analysis and tank model test in order to suppress its motion as small as possible. The motion of the feeding platform was first predicted by numerical analysis. The unmoved point was formed at each period of the incident wave. It moves upward as the period of the incident wave increases. Consequently, the point at 8m below the sea surface (3m above the bottom of the feeding platform) is the best one to attach the feeding hose. As a result of tank model test, pitch and heave motions of the feeding platform were dominant in the waves with short (1.5 seconds) and long (3.1 seconds) periods, respectively.
